Ideas for Deeper Controls in NBA Live 17

Postby Andrew on Tue Mar 15, 2016 10:04 pm

A spinoff of the Wishlist thread here. Something that a few of us have mentioned that we'd like to see is deeper controls, specifically bringing back manual control over things such as bounce passes, bank shots, floaters, and the like. It also seems that most of us don't want a complete overhaul of the control configurations, just tweaks to the existing concepts. I'm definitely in that camp.

So, I thought we could throw out a few ideas for what those control schemes would look like. Whatever we can come up with, I'll be sure to add it to any Wishlist materials I send along to the developers (I've already submitted a few, including a link to our main Wishlist thread, and they've been most receptive).

I'm still figuring out my suggested changes, based on alterations to NBA Live 16's controls. In the meantime, I'll open up the floor to the rest of the Live gamers.

Yes definitely. The pass choices have to be added.

I get so angry when I try to pass, either icon pass or stick pass, when I have a guy standing in front of me so my player passes it right into his chest or feet. Man that pisses me off. I'm like

I do see AI players do the same thing. That has to be fixed, no question.

Floaters and bounce passes definitely.

I'd also like to see better post performed using the right stick and tapping shot like 2k has

So based on the current controller configuration, any ideas for tweaks and additions? As in, how you'd like to see those controls implemented?

As I said, I'm still working on my suggestions, but something I feel works very well is "double tap pass to perform a bounce pass", as we saw in NBA Live 14. That's something I'd be in favour of bringing back.

Not quite sure how 2k does it but assigning certain buttons to certain kinds of passes would be easy enough using the right stick to choose who you're throwing to. EA could implement some kind of "best kind of pass" thing in the event we go with an icon pass.

Some changes or additions:

Left Stick (press) + direction + Turbo/Sprint : Super Sprint
Left bumper: Modifier to shoot off the glass
Right bumper: Size up moves
- Press down on left stick for quick strike dribble to blow past defender if you succeed off Iso
- Isolation dribble moves need to be improved
Back down button needs to change: Left bumper (HOLD) to activate post mode
- Y Button - instead of pro hop, could be a quick step back
- Most post moves in today's game are finesse and quick
D-Pad - Favorite plays or Go-To plays (offense)
Inbound plays need it's own menu with the current system or use the D-pad for Go-To inbound plays
Loose, Med or High, *intense defense Press defense should be accessible much quicker, D-Pad would make sense for that also
Types of screens - Hard screens, Soft screens LT + modifier (maybe)
Intense on ball defense - Use to have it in other Live games
Pass button - B button - 1 tap for regular pass, hold for a zip pass, double tap for bounce pass

Yo they need to fix the responsiveness of the icon passing. In Live 10 it was perfect, especially when hitting the right stick for a "freestyle pass".
In Live 15, it was passable but in 16 it's almost useless.

For regular passing should they do a Madden style passing where the longer you hold the pass button, the harder the pass is?

I think responsiveness is definitely something that needs looking into like Q says passing can be delayed but also playing defence in the paint blocking/rebounding can also be very difficult.

I think the problem for the in the paint game play is that a lot of the game literally slows down, if you've played NBA Mobile, the paint game is organic and real paced. The blocks are just amazing in it. That could be the problem effecting controls

I think Live15/16 has played victim to the offensive players animation playing out a lot stronger than the defence can react which has a lot to do with the foot planting animations on say something like the euro step makes it very hard to block even if your smashing the block button.

Only sliders can help us in that respect by lowing the inside/layup/post scoring to 0 I get enough missed shots in traffic by the cpu but there animations still play out while iam left standing there.

Agree. Like in Live 14! :)
Back down button needs to change: Left bumper (HOLD) to activate post mode

I consume today's system (LS/L3) ok, this suggested one will be less comfortable for me.
- Y Button - instead of pro hop, could be a quick step back

Still left double shot button X tap instead. Maybe make that stick down + double X.
- Most post moves in today's game are finesse and quick

+1. I play often in LUT for Al Jefferson and he spins in post like a ballerina.
D-Pad - Favorite plays or Go-To plays (offense)

Still prefer today's brand new system with right stick using to specify one from more attacking ways. Please left D-Pad for subs, formation changing etc.
Pass button - B button - 1 tap for regular pass, hold for a zip pass, double tap for bounce pass
It's clever! :) EA, make it!
Q wrote:For regular passing should they do a Madden style passing where the longer you hold the pass button, the harder the pass is?
Sounds similar to the last one. Very good idea! :)

I personally at 95% like the NBA Live 16 controls scheme. Just still missing a way to make "no touch pass" as well "a tip shot" from the bounds especially during the very last game seconds [please fix the absence to play with the 0,3 seconds rule!]. 2K allows that. ;)

Returning to this as it's something that I've been thinking about, especially after writing this article the other week. I'm basing my controls on the PS4's controller, but the same configuration (more or less) should work on Xbox One as well. In any event, here's a first draft:

Basic Offense

Square: Shoot
Triangle: Pro-Hop/Drop-Step/Gather
Circle Fancy Pass (Tap), Alley-Oop (Double Tap), Hand-Off (Hold)

R1: Direct Pass
R2: Sprint
R3: Switch between backing down and facing up (dribbling)/Switch between face up and back-to-basket triple threat (not dribbling)

I still believe they should have a 'super sprint' or acceleration button. Hold Turbo while pressing down on the left stick in the preferred direction for an extra speed burst to perform Westbrook type plays. Since it would use a lot of energy, fatigue would be affected a lot harder when in use to reduce spamming.

Perhaps that could be a player-specific trait, kind of like Badges in NBA 2K (or a more realistic version of Freestyle Superstars)? Some players should really stand apart in their acceleration and be difficult to defend of the dribble.

definitely, I think its time they let athlete be athletes instead of trying to keep the game play 'controlled in a setting'

I feel the game should always be grounded in reality and aim to be as realistic as possible, but in saying that, there are players in the NBA that really stand out from the pack in terms of their athleticism and/or skills. On top of deeper controls, I feel there needs to be some kind of trait or skill system that makes the top players stand out, like Badges do in NBA 2K, and like Freestyle Superstars was first aiming to do all those years ago.

They had them in Live 06, but it was more specific to the type of player, but I do agree that superstar players should have a certain tier. Especially in the ratings, like have regular ratings, then have "superstar" tier ratings. NHL has a lot of players rated high and the game play benefits because of it. No NBA player should be rated lower than a 70 in my opinion

Sure. As I said, FSS was a first attempt at making stars stand out. It may not have worked out how everyone was hoping, but the underlying premise was solid. Traits, Badges, Attributes, Special Abilities...whatever name they end up being given, things that elevate certain players above others and properly represent their style of play and skill level are most welcome.

I'm OK with some bench warmers being rated in the 60s, or even the 50s for completely raw prospects. Even if they have made the NBA, their skills have to be evaluated and rated by NBA terms, in comparison to the best in the game (then and now). It was taken a bit too far around the time of NBA Live 2004 and NBA Live 2005 though, when we had some players rated in the 30s and 40s. If I were them, I'd have felt a bit insulted upon firing up the game.
