Youtube: Why do my NBA 2K17 videos not show up in search results?

Postby Dee4Three on Thu May 04, 2017 4:05 am

Hi,

This is pretty random, but any help would be appreciated.

I've been uploading a lot of gameplay videos recently to Youtube, it's fun. I only have about 25 subscribers because I just went public with my videos early last week. I tag all my videos like this: If it's a NBA 2K17 video, Ill use tag "NBA 2K17" and "NBA 2K", if it's NBA 2K13, Ill tag "NBA 2K13" and "NBA 2K".

For some reason, even though all of my videos are public, my videos don't show up under "NBA 2K17", or "NBA 2K", no matter how I search. For example, I searched "This Week", with the search being "NBA 2K17", and none of my videos show up on any of the results. How is that even possible?

My Youtube channel is under "Derek Ferland", and when I search under my name, the videos pop up. Am I completely clueless to how this stuff works? what am I doing wrong? I'd like to get more views in order to draw more interest into the PC version of NBA 2K.

Here's an example of one of my videos that just won't show up.

I found it by adding Lakers & Celtics and sorting by upload date, but even then there are already 2 videos posted since this one.

It's YouTube/Google's search algorithm. The "Upload Date" filters on the left prioritize bigger channels due to the Relevance sorting on the right side.

If you want to grow within YouTube's search results, tie-in with current events. A lot of people are searching IT and Curry today because of last night. So just having something like "In honor of Isaiah Thomas scoring 53, I took the 08 champion Celtics against the stupid dumb Lakers to see how badly the Lakers suck" would get you more views.
Opinions are my own.

If I do that, I am absolutely going to call them "The stupid dumb Lakers".

Thanks for the tip. I'll mess around with the names.

But, do you think that the "TAG" is just as important? Should I be tagging more?

I run the YouTube channel at work and I don't really know if tags do much. I feel like having unique words in your video title help you stand out, so having common words like 2K17 will just bury you under the other people

I was trying to keep it professional, and less dramatic. I see so many videos with titles that make me cringe... like "LIVE 18 GAMEPLAY!!! THIS IS LIT!!!!", and I throw up in my mouth a little.

I may try to spice up the titles SLIGHTLY.... ever so slightly... not cheesy or vomit inducing.

Thanks,

Also, maybe having the thumbnail show Tom Heinsohn smelling K.C. Jones is the key to getting more views (see above).

Tags are very helpful with search engine optimization, definitely take advantage of it. I mean, you could just put IT's name in those and have your video show up in searches. But in theory YouTube could take your video down if it isn't related enough.

Thumbnails are huge. Any interesting still or facial expression is a must. Just look around at related videos and see what catches your eye, and then try to figure out why.

There is definitely a nice middle-ground you can hit. Look at mine if you want a good idea of simple stills to use

Rocket League explosions, tip off, Curry's shot, dunks over people, silly Dwight Face, a fucking Bunny, players sitting during a game, weird coach face, etc.
Opinions are my own.

Thanks,

Yeah when I said unique, I didn't mean over the top or cheesy or click bait. For example, my company's name is Go Rhino, but then when talking about our new Sport Bar 2.0 product, I can simply title the video using those words and benefit because they are pretty unique search terms.

Our most popular video has the Grizzly Coolers name in the title which might be why it's still hitting a lot but I think we are getting a lot of hits from the related videos on the side

There's a Jeep video that's still pretty popular, so I think the Jeep tag might be helping there

Perfect, thanks Jaosming/Q.

Last question...

I've been trying to move my videos to a Brand Account. Part of the problem is.. my name is Dee4Three on here, but Derek Ferland on youtube.

If I move them to a Brand account, do I lose my views/comments?

According to this, some content can't be moved. I'm guessing the user comments and view counts remain, but having never had to do it myself, I can't say for sure.
