PS4: 500GB Vs 1TB

Postby Kenny on Thu Jul 16, 2015 1:11 am

So, I've been looking at the possibility of getting myself a PS4. Among the deals I've seen, there are deals that have more games with 500GB storage, as opposed to one that has just one game (Batman: Arkham whatever) and has 1TB. All of them are generally around the same price.

Basically, I want to know if getting the extra space would be worth it and whether game data is overly intensive on said storage. I'm leaning towards less storage and more games, but if these games are going to eat up the storage quickly, I would probably reconsider.

I've found that 500 GB does get filled up fairly quickly. Periodically cleaning out your capture gallery certainly helps, as those videos will end up eating a lot of available space.

So, would you say most of the storage issues are due to video captures?

Probably still the games, at the end of the day. You're usually looking at 15-50 GB per game, installed on the hard drive.

Ah, that's pretty big. It's something I'll have to consider with my decision.

Mind you, I do have 27 games currently installed, with about 78 GB free (and around 5 GB in the capture gallery at present). So it's not like you install a couple of games and then whoops, 500 GB is suddenly gone. They're not all up around the 50 GB range - NBA 2K15 is, to name one - but definitely at least 15-25 GB in most cases.

I got maybe 2 or 3 games installed, so it depends on how much downloading you do.

As for the different packages, I'd say get the one with the games you'd more likely play as I've found that I don't really play a whole lot anymore if the game loses its appeal

Yeah, if the selection of games doesn't really appeal to you, the 1 TB drive is arguably the better long term investment.

I've had my ps4 for about six months and I'm already deleting stuff to save room. I'd go with the terabyte

You can go bigger by buying a 2tb hdd and swapping it out with the 500gb.

Given the free games that come with a PS+ subscription, I'd say so. That's certainly how I've expanded my collection.

There really haven't been many free ones that have interested me. I wound up getting Hitman Trilogy for free on PS3 because I knew I wanted that one. On PS4 though I've downloaded Injustice which was surprisingly pretty decent and Driveclub. The Rocket League game for this month seems like an interesting concept but not enough to make me want to download it.

Some I've just grabbed out of principle (FREE GAME!), but there have been some good/high profile ones, like Outlast and Metal Gear.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm leaning towards the 1TB package, since my main issue with it is a short term one - that being that the only game it comes with is Arkham Knight. I loved Asylum, but I couldn't really get into City all that much. Strangely enough, I think it was the more open-world nature of it that made it less interesting to me.

In saying all that, my main reason for buying a PS4 will be for future releases, such as Fallout 4, Mass Effect and NBA Live 16 (I'm leaning more towards it this year).

There is a new feature added in awhile back that lets you backup games to an external drive if you ever need space. Downside is that I think you need to format the drive to exFAT.

Also if you are a fan of football games, PES 2016 is looking like a must buy at this point.

Also, if you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, you can expand your games library with the free games to tide you over until you've got the funds to spare on more games (or the games you're waiting for to come out). So you needn't be stuck with the one game if that's all you've budgeted for at this time...assuming of course, you also budget for the PS+ subscription. ;)

I get all the PS4 games, every month. Because why not?

You can just add them to your library, rather than having to download them, so hard drive space isn't an issue. I'll probably never end up even downloading most of them, but they're there if I want them, or run out of games, or hear something good about one of them months down the line.

I have a nba live 15, nba 2k15 & call of duty and that is all I play on when I have the time lol

Is the stock drive replaceable with SSD?

I mean without having to flash the thing or voiding warranties...

Yes, but you have to download a file and install it on the ssd. I read that it didn't help people much in terms of performance.

Hey, as long as you're enjoying yourself, it's money well spent. As koberulz said though, it's worth at least adding the free games to your library, so that you can choose to download them later if you want to give them a shot. It also saves downloading them then and there, and in turn, hard drive space in the long run.

I suppose that isn't exactly... hard.

I guess it depends on how the game is made. NBA 2K15 on PC has these big archives, so we still had to load the whole thing and extract needed files. So that effectively cancels effects of SSDs.

Anyway, I'm currently considering getting a console for several games - basically for a few games with much higher playerbase on consoles (I must be drunk).
PS4 seems to have larger playerbase in some of the games (sadly can't find all stats). That would be a huge plus for the PS4. But are there any complete stats of how many players are playing each game? Like Steam has.

I currently have XOne controller for use with my PC. From what I've read so far I can use it with XOne (duh) and PS4 (but if the game requires using the touchscreen I'd need the PS4 controller).
So that's not helping with the choice.

I also have quality headset (Sennheiser) with 2x3.5mm connector. Is it possible to connect it to PS4? It would be connected to my monitor which does have both connectors (and has free HDMI slots). Is there more "native" way?

Other stuff... Xbox One is getting the backwards compatibility. Since I have no games for any xbox, I guess this isn't exactly interesting feature for me. PS4 offers these free games if I pay for the membership (which as I understand is mandatory for both consoles if I want to play online) so that might be more interesting. Is that like EA's "On the House"? Like you get it once and it's yours forever? Does XOne has similar thing with their program?

I'll still be using my PC for major gaming, but I'd like to play some games (let say 5-10 in near future) on platform with substantially bigger amount of players. With my upgrade plans being pushed to Q1/Q2 2016 (Skylake-E, nV Pascal) I'm gonna have some extra spare cash.

So I hope you guys can help me with the decision where to take my talents to by answering these questions :D
