Lightning Strike PC Dead.

Fri Jul 11, 2014 11:52 am

My phone/cable lines were recently struck by lightning. I had every thing plugged into a surge protector and everything survived but my pc and my modem. I don't even know if this is possible but my hypothesis is the modem got fried through the cable lines and I unfortunately had my pc hooked up to it via an ethernet cable. Anyways the motherboard is wrecked, the hard drive is fine and I think the power source is good too. My question is what are the chances my CPU, RAM and GPU survived? I have no way of knowing until my new motherboard shows up in the mail and the anticipation is killing me.

GPU might have the best shot of them all

I assume the PC was on, which is probably bad news for the RAM.

This link will let you test your hard drive or cd/dvd/bluray drive.

Lightning strikes are pretty random. Any and all of the components could have been damaged. See if you can ask a friend if you can plug your video card into their motherboard to test it. The same for the RAM and CPU, but you gotta make sure they have the same style of slots on their motherboards.

Yeah unfortunately it was running when the lightning hit. That would suck if my GPU is the only thing that survived because it's out of date (radeon 6770) and needed replacing anyway. I'm worried about my i7 2600. If it's fried then I'm just gonna scrap the whole rig, use my macbook pro and buy a PS4.
