PS3 or my game NBA2k12?

My PS3 when playing 2k12 has become choppy where it affects my game play. It would freeze and pause for 1/4 to 1/2 seconds during game play.

I defrag my PS3 for the first time. Hold button, etc, etc #3 Restore File System as instructed by many as to how-to (youtube video).

It ran smooth once. Then choppy again. I defrag again. Choppy. I remove the game and reloaded it. Somewhat choppy, better, but far from how it was. Defrag and still choppy.

Is my PS3 dying? This is the 80G version so it's a few years old, but I don't play games that often. What else can I do or check?

Should I do a complete PS3 system restore? I just hate to loose all my setting, files, etc.
