Laptop that I will spend my savings on

Sat May 25, 2013 6:46 pm

Hello guys, as the title suggests, I need advice on which to buy among these laptops:

Laptop 1
ASUS K55VJ-SX074H ALUMINUM BROWN (i7-3630QM, 8Gb DDR3, 1TB-5400RPM hdd, NV GT-635, 15.6" led)

Laptop 2
LENOVO IDEAPAD Z400 (i7-3632QM, GT645M 2GB DDR3, 14" LED, 4GB DDR3,1TB HDD)

Let's assume I'm poor and only could afford laptops of the same price range (yeah, I'm poor and only saved that much since I've worked). Which one would you recommend? If there are better units of the same price, heads up will be appreciated. Pleas help. My money depends on it.

Have you canvassed at Gilmore? There are some price-friendly stores there.

Well, get the Lenovo one.

Yeah, I'll be taking a look at the stores there. I'm a little skeptic about the Lenovo one. Although it may be superior in specs, I'm concerned about the quality. I have not experienced using a Lenovo laptop. An Asus one, I have. And I used it for years. Any feedback on the quality of Lenovo units? Thank you for your response. :)

From my experience, strictly durability wise...

Lenovo moderate
Dell good
HP horrible
Toshiba bad
Acers good

Not too sure about Asus. But a lot of my buddies go for it and many of them are IT guys.

I'll have to agree with the HP one. They're just so horrible. Mine broke just after the warranty period. Acer laptops tend to heat up a lot.

Reading Amazon review is a good start btw.

Yep. Planned obsolescence.

What's the price range? Also I'd suggest waiting on Intel's new Haswell chip.

I'll have ~$1, 000 to spend for this. So either way, I may not afford the new chip. :)

If you are set on those choices, get the one with the GT 645M. The GT 635M uses older fermi architecture which is slower and less power efficient.

You could go slightly better for graphics with this one-

If you are willing to wait, I'd suggest to do so and see if there is a laptop with the new Haswell chip in your price range. I think you'll be able to find one at the $1,000 price point. Haswell will have up to 50% better battery life, 2x times better graphics performance (almost up to 3x on some chips), able to play 4k video.

Graphics performance comparison (GTX 650 vs. Haswell integrated graphics):

I think it would be worth the wait to see what the price points will be.

I bought an ASUS g75, popped in a solid state hard drive and this has been my main rig for the last year. I am overwhelmingly happy with this purchase. This is the first ASUS I bought (parts on my main desktop PC was always EVGA.) and I would recommend them.

You can finance your purchase with some retailers.
