It's Okay To Watch A Show Called Cougar Town

Did you like Scrubs when it was good? Did you stay with Scrubs even as it spiraled downward, then slightly saved itself before imploding? Do you love shots that are setup to not show a character before suddenly showing them solely for a punchline?

Here's a fun fact, you're missing the best comedy on network TV.

I know, the title. You can't get past it. And even then you struggle with the lead.

Good news, they only used her as the lead to invite you into the ensemble. Ala J.D. Ala Mike.

Yes, we know you didn't watch Spin City or if you did it was when Charlie Sheen took over.

Here's the thing, first half Spin City, first half of Scrubs, that humor you loved? It's not only all over Cougar Town, it's more so because Bill Lawerence not only is not making this more and more awesome on the fly, he rewrote it halfway through the first season to throw more ensemble all over your face than the network wanted, then considered changing the title just so you didn't not watch the show. Before realizing that keeping the name and mocking your sexism in the title was the way to go.

So in the end, here's what you need to do, not tell anyone, but acquire the first season and watch it so you can then later catch up on the second. See Spin City? See how the same concepts evolved in Scrubs? Well, here we are again. Another evolution.

If you watched all of this show and hate it, guess what, your name is already on the no-fly list. You terrorist scum.

I can't figure out how Modern Family has caused so many orgasms when this is so awesome. And I like Modern Family.

Agreed. Some parts of the show piss me off but overall it's great.

I like the show. Ellie (?) can be too much of a caricature of herself at times, but her husband is hilarious.

I love Ellie's dryness. Her husband is indeed the bomb, his man-love for Bobby is downright creepy.

It's a good show, gives me laughs. I liked the tight jeans walk in the last episode.

EAT THE SWORD

I have to eat the sword and once again rave about how this is the best sitcom on TV. Always Sunny is borderline derelict, so I can't think of anything else that is challenging Cougar Town right now. Every episode is just.

The faux reality show thing from the "eat the sword" episode was beyond brilliant in everything. Scripting, acting, the camera shots, etc.

Like I mentioned you can see all that writing style that was in Scrubs and Spin City, but it's just at another level here. They don't give a shit, they'll blast you with wordplay, a punchline and a reaction, and then turn it into something with weight, before going right back to the funny. And the characters are so perfectly done. Also, because they don't give a shit they'll setup a bunch of stuff and then BAM HIT YOU ALL OVER UR FACE RANDOMLY WITH SOMETHING. COULD BE DRAMA, COULD BE LULZ. U DON'T KNOW.

With each show I think Bill Lawrence is getting better. Spin City was the first good political show really, Scrubs did its own deconstruction of the medical genre just to poorly reconstruct it. (Only to result in Childrens Hospital deconstructing it even better, and doing it in the same exact abandoned hospital.) I can't even start to explain Cougar Town, to the point where I can't describe it to other people to get them to watch it. It's really like Arrested Development in terms of the entire ensemble being relevant, in terms of needing to know the show and the characters, in terms of if a joke bypasses you, too bad we're moving on. And like Arrested if you give someone the premise, they can't get why it's so great, and you can't ever do much more than force someone to watch a whole season to get it. Sorta like Better Off Ted too.

God this show is amazing.

The League is basically hitting it out of the park and yet I get to this and...completely different level.

I actually prefer Cougar Town to Modern Family, I guess I'm more into fast-paced straight up comedies than into awkward "reality"-style comedies. MF is still a great show though, but yeah I wish Better Off Ted was still around, it was on par with Cougar Town for me.

Decided to give this show a shot, since it was Bill Lawrence, and watched a few episodes at random.

First episode, I was annoyed by it. Seemed like Scrubs with a less intriguing premise and a worse cast. When they reused the "sensies" joke, I was shaking my head.

Second episode, I started to like it a little more but still thought it was mediocre like all network TV. I also thought that the blonde chick was going to completely ruin the show.

Third episode, I was fucking hooked, and had to download the first season.
