Smackdown vs RAW 2009

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

I'll have to take your word for it, I only have an Xbox 360 so I'm not familiar with what's available in terms of PS3 demos.

I'll just merge them.

Decent cover but when it comes to the Smackdown series I pay even less attention to who's on the cover than NBA Live.

I felt like picking up Smackdown vs RAW 2008 again yesterday so I decided to give 24/7 Mode another go but couldn't go any further when The Undertaker started hitting on Maria. Apart from fitting the character, I hope the path to Wrestlemania story mode in 2009 will be more fun to play since 24/7 Mode is just tedious with all the offday stuff. As far as getting the cash to unlock things, it's easy enough to sim through it a few times and far preferable to playing it.

Cover fits this time, IMO. Triple H on SmackDown and HBK on RAW. Damn I just noticed that the background is green. It's DX!

Since voices have already been recorded, I'm guessing the commentary teams and rosters will reflect the brands before the Draft. I doubt they'd go back and redo all the path to Wrestlemania stories this late in the game. That's to be expected though, by the time the game comes out there's always going to be a couple of wrestlers no longer with the company or on different brands. Or sadly, in Eddie Guerrero's case, no longer with us.

Will the game be any good? I guess that depends on your tastes and your expectations of a wrestling game. My standards for the Smackdown series are generally lower than NBA Live so I'm not greatly bothered by their approach to gameplay. I prefer a wrestling game to lean towards being arcadeish. A real wrestling classic might go 30 minutes but I don't want the average match in a video game to go that long, especially if there's a long story/career mode.

I think having character specific storylines from the user's perspective is going to be an improvement, since it should mean the wrestler you choose will react in character and other wrestlers will react to you appropriately as well. No more picking The Undertaker and watching him hit on the Divas while other wrestlers call him a rookie and suggest he needs to prove himself.

The Smackdown series tends to provide the same old same old, which might be good enough for you. It's usually good enough for me, give or take a few things I think could be better. If you're looking for something more revolutionary though I'm guessing you'll be in for a disappointment. For me, the gaming experience it provides is good enough and it has the WWE license. That's enough for me to retain interest in the series but the more discerning player would want more than that.

I don't think they'll be able to patch three commentary teams and an entire game mode to account for all the changes. At best, they might be able to change the brand listing when you select wrestlers for an exhibition match and maybe add some new wrestlers (as alluded to in one of the previews) but I wouldn't expect anything bigger than that.

Also, if they're going to do Hall of Fame/challenges again this year, I hope they don't do any more Royal Rumble/GM Mode related unlockables. I get the whole idea of making you want to play the game for as long as possible but it gets to the point where you've spent so much time unlocking everything, you don't want to play it anymore even if you do have some new unlockables to play around with.

Good write-up, it's nice to have a wrestling fan covering a wrestling game. It spares us the snide comments about pro wrestling and pro wrestling fans, while going into details beyond the standard things you'd expect from a game on a seventh generation console.

Good to hear that we're back to storing finishers rather than fighting styles and that fighting styles have been refined for each wrestler so it's specific moves rather than a few generic movesets. I'm a bit concerned about the changes to submissions though. On one hand it's a good thing that simple holds won't result in submissions anymore but in the event that career mode throws you into a submission match, it sounds like you're going to be screwed if you're not controlling someone that has a submission as their finisher or is a submission specialist. In a way that's realistic, but making an element of the game impossible for the user to win is a bit silly. Hopefully it won't be like that.

The next ability we really dug was Fan Favorite. We didn't get to see it in action, but what will happen is the Superstar will begin taunting and clapping in an attempt to get the crowd going. If the opponent doesn't stop the Superstar, the crowd will get in on the claps, they'll become deafening, and the foe will cover his ears and be open for an attack.

That, on the other hand, sounds pretty lame. When's the last time they did that spot in a WWE ring? Maybe if they simply had the other wrestler distracted or trying to quiet down the crowd only to run straight into an attack, but that wouldn't be appropriate for face-vs-face bouts. In all fairness I'll wait and see how it plays out but I'm not too enthused about that idea.

Create-a-Finisher sounds really good though. 500 moves to choose from should give most people the freedom to create whatever they had in mind, or something close enough to it. Tag matches also sound like they might be worth the hype and I'm glad to read that
when Superstars such as the Undertaker perform finishers that end in a pin, the game's going to make the move flow so that the sequence doesn't end in a rope break

since that's always been an annoyance in every wrestling game I've ever played that acknowledged the rope break rule.

I'd like to see that too but unless the original wrestlers use the same layer system as CAWs that's unlikely to happen.

Fairly positive impressions though I think it would be preferable for Orton to have a standing RKO as well as the "stalking" setup when his opponent is down, just as HBK has two versions of Sweet Chin Music...or maybe he won't, anymore. In any case, in lieu of someone having two seperate finishers they commonly use, a couple of variations of their finisher would be better in my opinion.

Andrew,

Personally, I liked the standing RKO that Orton had in previous games. I'm not a fan of the way the finisher system works now, I much preferred the old way of having the ability to store them to use on my opponent whenever I wanted.

The one thing that I'm most excited about is the Create-A-Finisher feature. I also think that they might be phasing out Legends in SVR games because of the new WWE Legends of Wrestlemania game.

From the sounds of it they're bringing back the ability to store a finisher, which is good news. As far as the Legends are concerned, I don't see them dropping them just because they're doing the other game but I suppose anything's possible.

Andrew,

That seems entirely plausible. The one thing I hated was I would unlock The Rock but then would not be able to use him during the career mode. The last time I played a SVR game was the 2006 version, I think.

Unless they go back to text-only cutscenes or can convince The Rock to record audio for the game, that won't change. I don't see either happening, particularly the former. For all its advantages, it wouldn't be very Next Gen.

Some gameplay videos.

I have to say the new Tag Team animations look great, the ones when somebody is tagged in as well as the finishers. The Hot Tag looks also very promising, but I hope that it can't be abused. For example you working on your opponent in your corner, successfully isolating him from his corner, but then all of a sudden he rushes to his corner and tags his partner in. Of course that's how it is in real life, but when they can do it all the time I think it will become frustating.
The Inferno match looks nice.
Oh yeah, he said the roster will contain 60 wrestlers which isn't as great as it sounds, considering there were 51 wrestlers in SvR '08.
