Random GTA Talk Thread

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

Me too, though I've never actually completed all the Ambulance levels before for one reason or another. I think this time I was just in the right frame of mind and am familiar enough with the GTA3 map at this point to advance through the levels without much trouble. Or maybe playing it on the PC has something to do with it, being closer to the screen and all.

I don't know, the 18+ tag doesn't have an Office of Film and Literature Classification seal on it so I doubt it's their rating, especially if video games can't carry an R18+ rating here. Strange that they don't, there's definitely movies that carry that classification in Australia.

i always found the ambulance missions to be some of the harder ones just cause of how long they go. it can be difficult to avoid damage and a rollover during the 30 minutes or whatever it takes to complete the mission.

I really thought that the those side missions' progress will be "saved" whenever your car gets blown up or whatever. I did the Vigilante ones in SA, and made it to level 10 then my car caught fire, I got CJ out, it blows up and it's all over. When I got a new Police car, I start at level 1 again.

I actually rolled the ambulance on my way to picking up the final patient on the final level, which I wouldn't have found very amusing had I not managed to stop it rolling once it was back on its wheels. Firefighting missions are ridiculously easy in comparison.

Ah, but that would be too easy. ;) If you get a new police car in time you should be able to continue though, unless that feature was removed from San Andreas and I've forgotten about it.

Use the police bike with a bunch of SMG ammo if you don't have a Hunter or Rhino, being able to shoot forwards lets you cut apart vehicles quick.

For me, exploring in GTA3 was a bitch. I just couldn't get used all the bridges and overpasses. Portland was easy enough, but Shoreside Vale was absolute hell. Vice City and San Andreas were easy street.

Shoreside Vale is more tangled than the other two areas of GTA3 but I thought Vice City and San Andreas's maps were just as complex the first time around. Having a map in the pause menu helps a lot though.

I'd say it's easier to take wrong turns in Staunton and Shoreside though. Portland is very straightforward once you've played it a bit.

I still have yet to understand the rating systems of movies & games here. In the movies, we have PG-13 (suggested for 13+) and next up is R (no one under 17 is allowed without parent) and then NC-17 (no one under 17 is allowed). A lot of violent movies are rated R simply for blood.
Similarly, with video games, the new E10+ is the replacement for the former E rating for "Everybody". Games with cartoon violence often get the E10+ or T (Teen) rating. Teen games are suggested for teens around 13-17 but if there is any red blood in the game, it's instantly given an "M" (Mature) rating so you can't buy it without a parent if you're under 17. it's not like you're buying porn, seriously how can you lump a game like Halo 3 into the same category as the GTA 3 Series? stupidity. There's a lesser known rating "AO" like the R18+ that's like the kiss of death for video games. Retailers simply won't carry these games. and yet they insist on checking IDs for M rated games. the hype of video games turning kids into killers is getting out of control.

It's totalitarian nonsense, and since it doesn't make sense in theory there's no reason to expect it to make sense in practice.

I'm pissed. Playing through GTA3 again, my game froze in Shoreside after I had deposited most of the suburban car list and had 15 kills without saving. And I was in Wichita Gardens when it froze...

I think it comes down to video games being seen as toys/something for children, ignoring the generations that have grown up with video games and are still gamers and prefer a different genre of games aimed specifically at them. Presumably, the absence of an R18+ rating for games in Australia ensures that the content won't reach certain levels of being unacceptable for younger gamers should they get their hands on it one way or the other...which is still silly since an MA15+ game is going to have more than enough objectionable content to get parents up in arms.

Meanwhile, I've hit a snag playing GTA3 on the PC. For some reason, the zoom controls on the sniper rifle aren't working which is making Salvatore's mission "Bomb da base" exceptionally difficult.

I tried something different - I used the direct approach, ran on the ship and tried taking those mofos out. First time I died from getting shot in the back. Second time it worked. The key is to keep moving while shooting(with the uzi).

That was going to be my next approach. I've managed to build up a decent arsenal from doing the usual side missions/exploration before hitting the story missions including a flame thrower so maybe a less subtle approach is in order.

I've been playing this on the PC recently as well (bought from Steam) and neither of my USB controllers will let me use the right analog stick to rotate the third person view around the character, which is incredibly frustrating. Does that actually work on some gamepads?

I've been playing this on PC so its helping out a lot. I failed the first time actually cause I missed one of the guys hiding behind a crate. But the 2nd time it was very straight-forward and just took them out one by one.

Currently I am stuck on the first Catalina mission cause I don't have enough money yet.

I'm using a PS2 controller connected to a USB adapter for it, and a 360 controller, neither of which are known for widespread compatibility. My old Logitech Rumblepad 2 became useless when one of the face buttons started sticking every time I pressed it down. Might have to order up another Logitech pad but last time I checked them out they weren't very impressive...

Just use the mouse, Andrew. If I am not mistaken there is nothing stopping you from switching between the two on the fly? I would use the controller for cars and moving, and the mouse for when I need perfect aiming.

I was thinking about that as well, I believe you can switch on the fly so that's something else to try before I go the less subtle route.

I've heard of other people having problems with the Logitech controllers but I've been fortunate so far, this issue with the sniper rifle being the first problem I've come across...and that could simply be a configuration issue, since the buttons definitely work as normal in all other functions.

Further inspection revealed it was indeed a configuration issue I'd overlooked when I changed the controls to match the PS2 version. I ended up using the mouse as Ben suggested though, just for that extra precision.

GTA San Andreas on the PC was always a nightmare , at least when you flew. For the initial flying school missions involving flying through rings , it was not possible for me to even complete the mission. I tried using my controller , using my keyboard , none of them worked. Eventually I had to have someone on another forum take my save file and complete the mission for me.

Shame I had to miss the "Go to Liberty City and kill those Mob bosses" mission because I couldn't even land the plane at the end of that mission.

A few missions I filmed when I was playing

Same here, can I send my save file to him as well? I just got very frustrated with that mission.
