Most Overrated Athletes

Tue Jun 28, 2005 10:49 pm

I watched "Whos Number 1?: Overrated" last night on ESPN Classic, it was a bullcrap list in my oppinion. (Anna Kournikova #1? The Heisman Trophy #2? Notre Dame Football!?)
This one is directly from ESPN.com, and I agree pretty much with ervery word.

10. Chris Webber
Doesn't battle it out under the basket. Averages 60 games per season. Hasn't done what it takes to move from "very good" to "great." It's all been said before, and it's all true. Page 2's Charley Rosen, who's forgotten more about basketball than we'll ever know, once ran through a list of the league's clutch players. Was C-Webb in there? You bet. As a "decoy." Ouch.

9. Pavel Bure
The Russian Rocket? For years he's been struggling even more than the Russian space program. And he comes at a higher price.

8. Jake Plummer
Career passer rating: 69.0. Career TD passes: 90. Career INTs: 112. Sure, he played in the football wasteland that is Arizona, but that's no excuse: Plummer did nothing to elevate the Cardinals. That's what a good QB is supposed to do. But Plummer's not good. There's no evidence to suggest he is. So, the question remains: Why did the Broncos give Plummer a $7 million bonus to sign with them as a free agent?

7. Antoine Walker
A friend's e-mail said, simply, "Check out that shooting percentage!" So we did. And, wow. He's the worst shooter in the NBA among players who averaged at least 8 points per game. Lowest field-goal percentage (.388). Unfortunately, only five players in the league put the ball up more. Walker was also among the worst 3-point shooters, which begs the question of why he attempted a whopping 582 3-pointers last season. And here's the topper: Shaq shot better from the charity stripe than Walker.

6. David Duval and Phil Mickelson
How many majors have the two won between them? Mickelson: 0 (in 44 tries). Duval: 1 (in nine years on the PGA). One reason Tiger's been so incredibly dominant: Duval and Mickelson can't touch him. If we're looking for someone to challenge Woods, it's way past the time to start looking elsewhere.

5. Darin Erstad
Erstad had one great season in his career, and many poor-to-fair seasons. He may contribute the "intangibles," but the Angels center fielder is the worst-hitting regular center fielder in the AL, and near the bottom among all outfielders. During the 2002 World Series, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said, "We have some guys who can hit the ball out of the park, but predominantly we're a club that does battle at the plate and moves runners along, and it's been successful for us this year." Erstad wasn't one of the guys who could hit the ball out of the park (19 homers total in 2001 and 2002), and he wasn't one of the runners who got moved along (terrible .313 on-base percentage in 2002). One great season does not a great (or even good) player make.

4. All closers
What does it take to make an "excellent" closer? Give a half-decent pitcher the ball, a lead of up to three runs, nobody on base, and only one inning to pitch every two or three days. He'll rack up dozens of "saves" and be called "one of the best closers" and reap millions in rewards.
As one GM told Peter Gammons, "There are about three closers who really make a difference in the game. Otherwise, the notion of paying an Armando Benitez or Robb Nen $6.7 million to $8.8 million is outdated and silly."

3. Derek Jeter
What's the deal with Steinbrenner asking Jeter, in that Visa commercial, how he can afford his nights on the town? George, you pay the man. Or, we should say, overpay ($19 million a year through 2010). Jeter's good. Very good. Probable Hall of Famer. But his performance has declined every year since 1999, and he's only the fourth-best shortstop in the AL. Defensively? Adequate, at best, as Rob Neyer explains here.

2. Mike Tyson
Ten heavyweights we'd take over Tyson:

Muhammad Ali
Joe Frazier
George Foreman
Larry Holmes
Joe Louis
Rocky Marciano
Sonny Liston
Jack Johnson
Gene Tunney
Jack Dempsey

1. Vince Carter
The second coming of Michael Jordan? Not quite. To quote one ESPN editor who's seen this country through a bagful of undeclared wars, "Vince Carter is the most overrated athlete of my lifetime."

Thats a pretty good list

My Personal List-

T10. Kobe Bryant
-Having the moste dominant center in basketball on your team helps alot, Hes god 'Skills' but still, Mediocre tallent on his own at best.

T10. Brett Farve
-How manny seasons has the guy played? 20?

8. The Atlanta Braves
-Name 1 good team in the National League in the 90's.... The Mets? Na...

7. Barry Bonds
-Steroids, Steroids, Steroids, Steroids.

6. Chris Webber
-See Above List.

5. Vince Carter
-See Above List.

4. Roger Clemens (The Yankee Version More Than The Others)
-Yeah, lets give you 6 run leads every start, you'll reach 300 wins in no time.

3. Rollie Fingers
-Anny Starter-Turned-Closer is way overrated in my book.

2. Joe Torre
-Lets give you all-stars at every position every year of your career. A Monkey can run that team. Now that he has to actually Manage in 04, 05 Hes not doing so good is he?

1. The 1990-Present New York Yankees (Except 1998).
-Yogie Berra has 10 World Series rings, Jeter has 3.

what the hell?? kobe mediocre talent......... you are by far the worst person on the planet!

Tue Jun 28, 2005 10:56 pm

10. Brett Farve
How manny seasons has the guy played? 20?

What? He's an IronMan for Pete's sake... Has been sacked hundreds pf times in games and practices, and didn't even break a fingernail. Hasn't missed a game in more than 10 years. The Pack are always contenders and in the playoffs. So he's missing a ring, is that it? I don't see people raving about Peyton Manning and Mike Vick noticing the distinct lack of playoff successes. Don't even begin to badmouth Brett, people, he's one of my personal heroes...

5. Kobe Bryant
Having the moste dominant center in basketball on your team helps alot, Mediocre tallent at best.

Mediocre talent?!?!?!?!?!?!? He's a ballhgog, granted, but MEDIOCRE TALENT??? C'mon, snap out of it...

What does he do when he doesnt have Shaq annymore?
Well, lets just say tthe 12th pick in the draft pretty much speaks for itself

On Brett Farve-
I'm just saying, when you play 20 seasons and a million games, your gonna rack up some records, and some passing yards.

If it was exactly two years ago (1 day before Lebron got selected at 1),
I would say DARKO MILICIC #1 MOST OVERATED ATHLETE, but now he isnt even rated so....
I guess for me it would have to be, ummm, Antoine Walker or Vince, although I like Vince, hes just way overated.

Tue Jun 28, 2005 11:02 pm

Damn Mazzlow! It's so annnnoying to see you putting double n's there in your words...lol
But..what?! Three NBA players in the Top 10? That sucks...
Anna Kournikova is definately one of them imo

Tue Jun 28, 2005 11:11 pm

mazzlowcchi is now officially my most hated person of all time and i will bag the crap through him at very oportunity

Tue Jun 28, 2005 11:16 pm

Lol, Bryant over-rated? That kid has skills. He's probably the best shooting gaurd in the NBA at the moment. Not McGrady, not Carter, Bryant. Just Bryant. Over-rated? Far from it. He's got a lot more proving to do, just wait and watch. 8-)

they always make Bryant out to be like the second coming or Jordan but hes clearly not.

I agree, he as skills, but not what everyone in the media makes him out to be.

Wed Jun 29, 2005 12:40 am

Well, Jordan is the greatest of all time...
So let's not compare him to Jordan..first... 8-)

OK Fine, lets not compare him to Jordan, lets compare him to an average player like.... (I dont want to offend annoyone so...) *INSTERT AN AVERAGE PLAYER HERE* Ok, if we compare him to an average player, Hes pretty good, hes got skills. (with an 'S', not a 'Z')

I'm just saying, compared to what the media makes him out to be, hes overrated.

(and once again, habing the most dominant center ever on your team for all 3 of your championship runs doesnt hurt either)

And dont go sand say 'Well Mazz, why dont you think Shaq is overrated then?' well, simply because what did Kobe do in 04-05? Lottery picks.
What did Shaq so? 1 game away from the final, and MVP Type Numbers.

Wow Carter is overrated???? Carter was 4th in the league in scoring 3 years ago, he lead the all-star votes like 3 years in a row. Yes the last 2 years in Toronto were not good, but look at him play in NJ.

And Mike Tyson, he was the youngest undisputed champion in the history of boxing and you think still he is overrated?? His retarted temper has made him loss all of his fights, if he still had his trainer (passed away) and he had good temper he could have been better than Ali and Fraizer.

Coming from a major Shaq fan!?!

Wow, its good to see :P

Mediocre Talent??? Thats the worst thing ive heard all year, if we have the awards, this is definately my vote for worst thing said.

If Kobe is mediocre talent, then damn! How bad are the rest of the Shooting Guards in this league? :?

I dont think Tysons overrated, the mid-post90's Tyson was, (mostly because he sucks) but I dont think early Tyson was overrated.

(the quoted is ESPNs list, and the bottom is mine)

Humm, I know this is a really small issue, but could you please, please, please change the word athleats to athletes? I know this seems as nitpicking but it annoys the hell out of me.

wtf???...did everybody think that he will be the next Jordan???...even i didn`t think that when i was 8 or 9

Wed Jun 29, 2005 4:30 am

Mazz, did you ever see Roger Clemens pitch with the BoSox? Don't answer.

I think Chris Webber has gotten to the point where he's known as the guy who just doesn't want the ball in his hands at the end of the game. It's not like we still think he's good, but if you saw him at Michigan, you would have been thinking the same thing that all of us who did were thinking

Also, did you check the date on that? I remember reading that like six months ago. The actual show was more relevant.

Wed Jun 29, 2005 4:49 am

Brett Favre- You've got 200-300 pound lineman running at you at full speed, hellbent on knocking you down. You don't think it's hard to not get injured when you face that situation for around half a game for 16+ games a season? Crazy.

Chris Webber- If you're talking about currently, he's not overrated. He just sucks, and we all know that.

Kobe Bryant- I don't like the guy, and he did have Shaq all those years which helped him win his rings. But you can't completely judge Kobe's talent based on this season's outcome. His team was "less than adequate" to put it nicely, and individually he still did well. The guy can shoot and drive and finish at the rim, and he does it pretty damn well regardless of how his team performs. Mediocre talent is a huge understatement of his skills.

Roger Clemens- Have you seen any Houston games this season, or at even heard the score of some? Everyone knows Roger's hardly getting any run support at all, yet he continues to win. That's no accident. When you watch the guy pitch, you know he's for real. His stuff doesn't lie.

Wed Jun 29, 2005 5:23 am

Can annyone help Mazzlow or teach him how to spell :P
Oh Mazzlow boy... I hate those double n's...

Annybody help him out? Annywhere?? :P

Wed Jun 29, 2005 6:09 am

Most overrated Athletes: All american 100 metres runners (They are all cheating with drugs).

Wed Jun 29, 2005 6:52 am

Coming from a major Shaq fan!?!

Wow, its good to see

He is still the franchise player of my favorite team. As I've said, I can critisize him, when someone else does it, I'll defend him. Ain't I a bitch?

Wed Jun 29, 2005 7:19 am

Bryant is good although I hate him. He still has skills. HE use to finish games for the lakers if I can recall right. Sure he had shaq on his team but fact is he hit shots in crunch time.
Now I want to know how the FUCK did Brett Farve reach your list?
Because he has played 20 seasons? Thats something to use against him?? Please, tell him how many QBs are going to last that long. The sacks, the stress, the hard work a QB has to do. I don't think Michael Vick will with all the injuries he has already had. You might as well add Kareem Adul-jabbar ( i cant spell it) and karl malone to your list since they ahead of jordan only because they played more years. To last that long and not miss any game in a sport that is the most physical is something very good to accomplish. I could understand if you was talking about a bowling ball or golf player but not a NFL player, especially a QB.
Vince carter...well no comment, he did do something really messed up in toronto by stop playing.. this kid is still good though. He can dunk
