I ended up disabling V-Sync in the NVIDIA control panel and dropping the quality to see if it'd make a difference, and it definitely did. I still have to do some tweaking as I should be able to have it on a higher setting, but if not, it still looks pretty good and I'm enjoying the experience.

Make sure you are running fullscreen with borderless set to off. The game has a cap of 63~ fps due to their lovely physics engine.

Indeed, looking into all those tweaks right now, thanks guys.
One thing that made a huge instant difference (which was somewhat expected) is the Shadow Quality: I left everything maxed out at first, which really shouldn't be a concern for this type of game, but evidently having the Shadow Quality at Ultra (seems to be the only setting offering Ultra actually) was a performance killer, so lowering it to High basically makes it feel like I'm playing Fallout 4 all over again.

Interesting. I might try upping my settings again, except for Shadow Quality, and see what I can get away with. Thanks for the heads up!

Unfortunately it looks like the pc version is once again very unoptimized and the shadows weren't really the solution here... It certainly helps to lower them when outdoors, but there are one again lors of issues when indoors, with blocky blinking lights and shadows, and greatly reduced performance when using the Pipboy light, sort of like when in the middle of Boston in F4. Hopefully some patches will help with that.
Still trying to mess around with the .ini files right now, most commands look very familiar but I'm seeing different opinions as to whether creating a custom one or making the existing ones read-only, and inconsistent results on my end too. Removing the intro from the main .ini file works like a charm for example (although the system keeps removing its read - only option for some reason), but so far I haven't been able to change the fog to 90 or to remove the ridiculous DOF/blur feature, even when making the fallout76prefs.ini file read-only too...

Are your specs correct in your signature?

I copied the fallout76prefs.ini and renamed it Fallout76Custom.ini.

Here is my Fallout76Custom.ini. It's just a copy of the "prefs" version with my tweaks that I found on the net. Increased FOV which caused grass flickering, LOD tweak that may lower your framerate in attempt to stop the flicker. Depth of Field "enabled" in a way to remove any blurring.

Ambient Occlusion is disabled in NVIDIA Control panel, but I think the game has it on. I found this online for Fallout 4 and added it as well. I'm not sure if it does anything because I threw in a lot of experimental things trying to get less flickering, sharper shadows, no DOF, and less pop-in.

I've had really good performance in the short term by lowering the graphics settings to Medium, though I do want to try some .ini tweaks.

Forgot to answer your question Pdub, but yea the specs in my signature are current, and they should be free more than enough to play game maxed out at 2k resolution, but oh well, may have to compromise a bit here...
Right before I exited the game right now, I had some random guy come by, chatting away and evidently streaming live on Twitch or whatever, explaining everything he was doing... He tried to kill an opossum but shot me instead, so the dude was like "I just accidentally shot a level 6 player and now he looks really pissed off", even though I was just minding my own business and leaving the scene...

It's not as bad as it could be I suppose (especially if the map really is 4 times larger than in F4) , in about 4 hours of game play I've only had one crash due to the server not responding anymore, which I thought would happen more often knowing Bethesda...
It's just disappointing that after so many years of recycling the same old engine the devs have seemingly been unable or unwilling to address some of the most glaring issues, like the texture streaming, the butt ugly character animations, the elements of the game inexplicably tied to the fps, the lackluster physics, etc. And as result we're getting something that certainly looks like a little better than F4 but ultimately could have ended up being one of its DLCs, and which doesn't even run silky smooth when maxed out... Considering that, I personally feel that other AAA open-world PC games like Far Cry, Assassins Creed, GTA, etc. can deliver a much higher visual quality-to-performance ratio (even if I'm sure those are not fair comparisons).

In all fairness, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 do run on the Creation Engine, same as Skyrim. Of course, it is forked from Gamebryo...

The latest patch supposedly fixes some optimisation issues. Downloaded and installed it earlier, but haven't had a chance to fire up the newly patched game yet.

Yeah, I was playing solo until my friend jumped on my first day playing it. Once I'd tweaked the settings and was getting decent performance, it was pretty good. As I said, the community has been pretty friendly so far, so when I joined in an event we worked as a team and helped each other out. It's a very different atmosphere as you're poking around in the fresh ruins of humanity, but I do like the quests so far. That being said, it is probably more fun teaming up with a friend and working together, especially when it comes to difficult combat.

Something I'm going to have to do is start stockpiling ammo, as well as relying a little more on melee weapons to preserve my ammo. Between that and needing to stay nourished and hydrated, there is a definite survival feel to the game. It's different, but it works. I haven't played Fallout 4 with its Survival mode on yet, but I did have some fun with Hardcore mode back in Fallout: New Vegas on a couple of my playthroughs.

I haven't had any mutations yet. My friend had a pretty cool one where he could jump insanely high, from the ground onto the roofs of buildings and from one storey to the next when there was a hole in the floor inside a building. He ended up using RadAway and losing it though, since we were in for some tough combat and he wanted to have full health.

You will start to get a lot of ammo, don't worry. It will be mainly .308, as most Super Mutants have that if they are using a hunting rifle. Don't forget to stash ammo you don't have guns for as it reduces your carry weight.

For those who want to turn off V-Sync and have an Nvidia card, you can do it from the Nvidia control panel under specific program 3D settings. I have mine set to "Fast" and in the game INI I set iPresentInterval to 0.
Everything is a copy of a copy. Eventually, it distorts enough to look original.

Have you made any further tweaks or noticed any improvement post-patch?

I reverted some things because I edited too many entries causing odd artifacts of shadows and pop-in. The DOF settings can be kept in, and I think the NVHBAO settings can stay, although I haven't really noticed strong Ambient Occlusion in the game at any setting. I went too far with certain LOD settings causing framerate drops and other glitches. I wish there was an offline mode or a benchmark so I could test settings. I've looked through many internet posts about Fallout 4/Skyrim INI settings, and most have been replaced by mods or other upgrades. I don't want to risk getting banned by using mods.

My brother and I are looking for another multi-player PC game that we can play together through a campaign, or just play through the content together (Atleast most of it). We would be playing on separate PC's together.

Is the entire game multi-player like in Elder Scrolls Online and Borderlands? We have beat Borderlands 1, 2 and the pre-sequel, and we are DEEP into Elder Scrolls Online.
