if you can get into a good university, don't be afraid to go because of money issues. don't just "settle" for a CC because the government will always pay you to go to school. I would know.
Qballer wrote:transferring to a 4 year is also a good idea, but if you apply for grants and the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) http://www.fafsa.ed.gov people are willing to give you money for free. that doesn't include scholarships that go for $250-$500 a pop. if you know where to look for the free money, it might be worth your while.
the last couple of years I've been getting $11000-$13000 of FREE money each school year. and any extra leftovers after it gets applied to tuiton goes to your bank account

Q, you're absolutely right. At UNC if your family's combined income is below $40,000 or so per year, you graduate debt free. You have to work for about 10% of your overall cost, but that is all.
It's not just about 'taking classes'. It's about the college experience. By that I don't mean going out and drinking and partying - that's all well and good. But college is also an amazing way to discover yourself through interacting with different types of people. You really begin to think more worldly and view things much differently after going through college.
They don't call them the 4 best years of your life for nothing.

anyways, I got about $110-120 a week student allowance, but that was like 8 years, but sounds like it hasn't really increased with cost of living which is pretty shitty....I paid $50 a week board, which was good when you consider that it factored in rent, electricity etc....but after that first year of uni, I was "forced" to move out by my new stepmum, which was fine by me....I took my $120 per week student allowance, got an additional $20 rent assistance, plus I worked about 10 hours a week & took home about $60....so I was living on $200 a week....of that, $65-70 went to rent (I was in shared accommodation with a bunch of mates & other uni people, although these days you couldn't get below $100 per week if lucky), then there was money that had to go to home phone, mobile phone, petrol in car, car registration, car insurance, food, etc....in an average week, I'd have $20 per week (sometimes up to $30 if I worked a couple of extra hours) leftover for "entertainment"....I used that leftover $20 on one 1.25L bottle of Kentucky Gold ($8, which was a watered down 23% bourbon that would last me 2 nights of casual drinking), one jug of beer ($6) & my share of taxi ride home from pub (about $6)....tell you what, they were good times![]()
suggestions are to go without where you can....use uni internet if possible rather than having home connection, although sounds like you're using it instead of getting Sky TV to get your bball fix, so it might not be negotiable....but yeah, you're just going to have to go without, but that should be nothing new to you....
once your studies are over, you'll be left with two sizeable student loans like me (okay, you'll probably only have one, but I have two) but you'll eventually get yourself on the road upwards....

I gotta say, I think housing costs have fucked everything up. My mum is paying $320 a week for a 3 bedroom unit in Sydenham. That's not bad, she actually got it quite a bit cheaper than the rest of the people in this block of townhouses. But when you consider that if you're a student - a minimum wage job, living in a 3 bedroom flat with 2 other friends - $320 a week is alot of money to pay between the 3 when you're only getting $118 a week. How the hell does the government expect us to live? The rent alone would be $100, then there's food, transportation, electricity, phone bill, internet, etc. That's all before you actually get to things for yourself.
Sure, we can work, but we are gonna have to work a good 15 hours a week to muster up that extra $150 (before tax) a week to actually get by. If you get the allowance and work 15 hours a week and living in a flat, you're gonna be paying about $110 in rent, $50 in food, $20 in electricity, $5 for the phone, another $10 for the internet and probably a good $20 a week to get to uni and back (much more if you have a car). What's that, a total of about $210 to pay a week from your $270 weekly pay?
Then they expect you to pay the loan back? Even though you only have $40-60 left over to spend on yourself? Even though your working 15 hours a week on top of trying to get an education, knowing that the work you're doing isn't gonna do anything to put a dent in that student loan?
Jesus Christ. No wonder people resort to "other" ways to make money.
Thinking this all out has got me even more pissed off. I have no idea how I'm gonna pay my education off, especially since I want to work overseas which means the goverment will stick interest on that loan.
Is there anyway to go to college in America without having to pay 3 times the fees as an international student?
- If you had a wish, what would you wish for? I'd probably mis-speak and ask for a massive tick.
- Where do you see yourself in ten years? I'm sitting in a car, eating a sandwich watching my second ex-wife shagging her new husband.
