i'm not sure if its my mac, or my old shitty pc, but using transmission i'm getting speeds of 200+ kbps!! though usually it borders around 50-100. on my pc, i was capped out a like 20.

camino is taking a little getting used to, but i think its worth it for the speedy initial loadup and seemingly less memory usage.

i didn't try very hard, but i couldn't get parallels to run using my bootcamp partition. but i'd prefer not to use parallels anyway, as, apparently, it is a massive memory hog. does anyone know if aftereffects cs3 will be native to mac?

as for word processing, i prefer neooffice, because abiword is doing some wierd shit.

Anybody purchase one of those Iphone things yet...came out today. Personally I wouldn't pay 500 american for a cell phone , I barely make any calls with my current one and just use it as a watch.

Sat Jun 30, 2007 3:36 am

Yeah, the iPhone's coming out today at 6 pm in North America.
I agree with ixcuincle on the fact that 500 bucks is way too much but if you consider all the features it has(multi-tap interface, real Internet, email, iPod, etc,) the price can't be less.
I believe the AT&T plans go from 59 to 99 dollars/month too, so the price goes up even more.

I'll have to wait until Q4 for the iPhone European release.
Apple will probably have 3 as its partner here in Italy, which is a really good thing since 3 gives phones for less money (I got a Motorola A1000 in 2004 for €99 instead of €399) if you agree to have a 20 to 50€/month plan.

It could be Transmission. I notice that I get really good speeds with it too, as high as 500kbps. With a speed download test, I topped at 4.7 MBps o.O

Don't quote me on this, but I believe all of the CS3 line are native and won't be using Rosetta. I know the other programs do, but not sure about After Effects, to be honest.

For what the iPhone offers, it is a $500 product regardless if the features are not used, as Joe mentioned. The plans that come with it are actually really good if you look at the full detail sheet.

Sat Jun 30, 2007 7:15 am

Yeah, all the iPhone plans come with unlimited data, 450+ minutes and 200 SMS messages.
The plans are pretty good considering most of the people don't even send 50 SMS/month.
I myself barely use my cell phone to call people.

Rumors are that the brushed metal iMacs are coming out in August. The enclosure is supposed to be two inches thick. I think this is what you were waiting for, Joe? :)

:o Great!! I always wanted iMacs to resemble Apple's Cinema Display's looks!

On a side note, Apple released a second beta of Safari, and so far I haven't had any problems with it. They fixed lots of bugs and if they fix the DivX Web Player plugin, I'm definitely going to use Safari as my main browser.

does anyone know how to convert mac fonts to pc? all i have found is crossfont, i'd be curious to know if theirs another way....

Thu Jul 12, 2007 7:29 am

I'm using OpenType fonts, which work on both platforms... sorry :(

I use a MacBook Pro 15" since September of 2006 and all I can say is that I won't back to PC's again. Now I'm a hell of a geek! :D

Since then if I have to buy some electronic product, I buy it from Apple. The quality is 100 times better than any other company.

If you don't like Macs... ok, but... you're hating them for no reason, there are no problems with them, and the software is damn great!! There are lots of great programs like Delicious Library, Safari, iChat, Final Cut, Aperture, Adium, GarageBand (I love it  ) There's nothing to hate on Macs, unless you don't have one and you're jealous.

I considered buying a Mac when my old laptop went dead but then I realized I wouldn't be able to play any of my precious games on it. I brought a Windows laptop instead. The funny thing is I can't play games on that either because of Windows Vista or memory issues

Sun Jul 15, 2007 12:29 pm

You actually can play games on Macs now. More than 300 or something titles previously released for Windows have been released in the past months for the Mac, and there are other titles that were released before (at the time they were released for Windows and consoles) for the Mac.

Not to mention the fact that you can run games on any Mac (OS X Panther or later) using Parallels, BootCamp or VMWare. All at native speed (Might be a little delayed if your Mac does not have the new Intel processors). It's like you're running the game on a Windows box, only on your Mac.

If only he would update more than four times a year...I check it all the time expecting something new and it never happens.

That article is absolutely dead-on, particularly the first image with regard to certain people I know. :cussing:

does anyone know of a program that allows me to record video and audilo from the internet (for example, you tube), and convert it to an editable, usable format? I already have audio hijack for audio only, but i would be interested in finding a corresponding video software.

thanks!

edit: also, if anyones interested, and hasn't heard of it yet, theirs a software bundle on sale at macupdate.com, it ends in 2 days and i have some email invites if anyone wants.

I am now reverting to safari or perhaps firefox. camino seems to lock up when loading sites like facebook or myspace for some wierd reason....

Yeah, I've been on Firefox for a while now. Though I like the speed of Camino, I have rarely encountered any problems with Firefox so far, and it's actually probably just as fast. Consider using Opera as well. It's very fast and it performs well, but it feels very different on a Mac.

Sat Jul 21, 2007 9:40 pm

I use Safari and I never had problems with it. It's the fastest web browser I've ever used, and it will look even better without the brushed-metal style in Leopard.

Sun Jul 22, 2007 3:01 am

Safari has compatibility issues at the moment and its popularity will never reach IE's if Apple doesn't solve this.
Has anyone checked if Stage6 works on the Mac version of Safari? Because it sure doesn't on the Windows one.

Stage6 works on Safari 2.0, but I agree, Apple shouldn't have released Safari for Windows this early. If they released it later, I guess when Leopard comes out, then it should be a bit more stable and compatible. I can't wait till Safari 3 goes gold.

Sun Jul 22, 2007 5:50 pm

yeah safari can't do some things i hear, but i've only ever encountered one task where i had to change browsers. for most uses it seems much faster than even firefox.

anyway, wondering - does anyone do any manual maintenance and such on their macs? Right now i have cocktail and techtool pro, i might run the manual sysem maintenance using cocktail, but i am somewhat wary of techtool pro considering certain mixed reviews.

I love Safari because of its RSS feature. I absolute love it, plus is soooo fast.
