Movies have never been able to capture the real batman and as a batman fan I couldnt stand watching the previous movies ( no disrespect to Jack N ) but this one comes close but cartoons and graphic novels still are the only place to see the real Batman.

This is by far the best superhero movie in my books. As I've said before & will do again, Spiderman (or the person who plays him) is too gay for my liking. I liked the darkness this movie brought, simply awesome. Must own on DVD.

Haven't seen it yet, but my cousin and I plans to see it next weekend.
I like the idea that they have made this one more dark compared to the previous Batman movies. I really liked the second Batman though, Danny de vito was really excellent as the penguin :)

Gotta say that I'm  how fast Christian Bale managed to bulk up to this movie from the machinist where he was like 120 pounds (so called) "heavy".

Yeah man, he looked like a NFL player.

That's incredible. Does anyone know how many months it was between the recording of the Machinist and Batman?

I think he's by far the best suited to play Batman. For the next Batman's, I'd hope they manage to keep him. Not a la Michael Keaton.

He's my favortie Batman, then comes Kilmer, Keaton and then Clooney. Although I like him more as Bruce Wayne, than Batman.

Comic book characters seem to always have different origins, especially when they make the jump to the big screen. I think that particular storyline existed only in the 1989 movie, not the original comic or for that matter the 60s TV series with Adam West and Burt Ward.

*I was going to go see the movie this weekend but I was too busy. I'm going to try to see it ASAP.*

Just to clear some things up, this movie is not associated with the other 4 Batman films. This is a new series that follows the story told by the original comic books, not what Tim Burton or the writers decided was the story of Batman. Batman Begins will be followed by at least 2 more films, both with Christian Bale returning as Batman, and with Christopher Nolan directing. FINALLY SOMEBODY IS DOING THINGS RIGHT!!!!! Bale was an excellent choice for the lead, and although the raspy voice bothered me a bit, he was clearly the best Batman ever (excluding of course, Adam West). The casting was perfect this time, with Michael Caine as a perfect Alfred, Morgan Freeman excellent as always, Gary Oldman as a "Lieutennant Gordon," Liam Neeson as a awesome mentor, and somewhat necomer Cillian Murphy as one of the coolest villians in recent memory. Even Tom Wilkinson, traditionally a Shakespearean stage actor, played a really cool Italian mob boss. The only mistake was Katie Holmes, but that can be forgiveable because they needed some eye candy/star power and she wasn't as bad as I expected.

As for the next movie, the Joker will be the villian, and the rumoured actor right now is Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. He's not new to the role, as he has done the voice for the Joker in almost all of the Batman television cartoons. I know its not the same, but I trust Chris Nolan enough that I know he will make Hamill another perfect fit. I know someone mentioned an inconsistency in the story, as Batman was the one who created the Joker in the 1989 version and several other comics.

the Joker was an unnamed engineer who quit his job at a chemical company to become a stand-up comedian, only to fail miserably. Desperate to support his pregnant wife, he agreed to guide two criminals into the plant for a robbery. During the planning, the police came and informed him that his wife had just died in a household accident. Grief-stricken, the engineer tried to withdraw from the plan, but the criminals strong-armed him into keeping his commitment to them.

At the plant, the criminals made him don a special mask to become the infamous Red Hood. Unknown to the engineer, this was simply a way to implicate any accomplice as the mastermind of a crime to divert attention from themselves. Once inside, they almost immediately blundered into security personnel and a violent shootout and chase ensued. The criminals were gunned down and the engineer found himself confronted by Batman, who was investigating the disturbance.

In panicked desperation, the engineer escaped by diving into a toxic waste vat and swam through a pipe leading to the outside. Once there, he discovered, to his horror, that the chemicals permanently stained his appearance into that of a clown-like being with chalk white skin, ruby red lips and bright green hair. This turn of events, compounded by the man's misfortunes on that one day, caused him to go completely insane and resulted in the birth of the Joker.

I doubt they will use much from this version in the movie, but there are many other versions.

In the short story "On a Beautiful Summer's Day, He Was" by Robert McCammon, featured in the anthology The Further Adventures of the Joker, the Joker is suggested to have been born a monster, not made one by bad luck. The story concerns him as a young boy who gets pleasure from killing small animals, considered the hallmark sign of a budding sociopath, and collecting their bones. The story notes that his father is also insane and, in a chilling scene, beats his mother while the boy listens through the wall, grinning. The end of the story has him graduating to murder, killing a neighborhood boy who discovers his makeshift graveyard. The story identifies the Joker's last name as Napier.

Chris Nolan could make that story amazing. There was also another version where the deal is that an old friend of Bruce Wayne's was the Jokers mother, and the Joker tortures and torments her to get to Batman. Unlikely, since Christian Bale is about 20 years younger than Hamill, and clearly not believable as a friend of his mothers. That would be worse than Angelina Jolie as Colin Ferrel's mom.

The way I see it happening is more of the disturbed child version, ending with a of the dying pregnant wife. Apparently Bale was pushing for more of a Rated-R batman series, but because of the money that can obviously be made, and I know it would make it much better, there's no way its gonna happen. Instead we'll hear stories or see diaries of the Joker about the spousal abouse and animal mutilation. Plus, I doubt PETA would be happy. Either way, if he's anywhere close to as good as the Scarecrow, I'll be happy.

Any recountings of the Joker's origin are largely unreliable, however, as they are taken directly from his own memories, and as he himself puts it in The Killing Joke, "I'm not exactly sure what happened. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... If I'm going to have a past, it might as well be multiple choice!"

IMO, Batman Begins is so far the top move of 2005, with 2 more great ones to follow.

Mon Jun 27, 2005 11:52 am

Forgive my ignorance, but this is a brand new series that's going to end up as a trilogy?

Mon Jun 27, 2005 12:07 pm

Perhaps not a trilogy, it could become more. But yes, this is seperate from the other Batman's.

Mon Jun 27, 2005 11:03 pm

Saw it tonight, it's one of the best movies I've seen and in my opinion as far as comics and whatever goes I'd rank it right up there with the first Ninja Turtles movie.

Mon Jun 27, 2005 11:29 pm

I saw this last night, gotta say it was fantastic. The casting was fantastic. Guys like Bale and Murphy just fit the role perfectly. It was cool remembering all that stuff I knew as a kid watching the cartoon. Crane showed up I was thinking oh he runs Arkham, etc.

Overall GREAT movie. (Y) (Y)

Because the movie is mostly based on that graphic novel along with other graphic novels such as Arkham Asylum, Long Halloween and Dark Victory.

Kevin pretty much sums it up regarding the Joker's probable origins.

I agree with Jackal but I'd put Keaton ahead of Kilmer. Keaton showed a good portrayal of Batman and Bruce Wayne's totally different persona . The only trouble with Keaton is that he doesn't look the part of a young playboy billionaire. Keaton is plain ugly compared to the other actors who played Batman.
