Atleast the Dutch exited the World Cup with dignity as they have lost in the penalty shootout unlike Brazil who was demolished by the Germans. But we will see who is the better team at the moment when they battle for third place.

They were asked. They declined.
Simply put they didn't want or avoided the responsibility of taking the crucial first shot.
Still sounds like choking to me.

Choking still confirmed.

Dutch fan still can't get over the loss confirmed.

Oh right, classify it as semantics.

There are players who simply don't want to take the first shot, just like there are players who don't want to take the last shot. You see this as choking, that only goes to show your blind hatred for the Dutch, which I find rather amusing.

I can't get over a loss? Seriously, what's your problem? Have I said that Holland should have won? Have I been "crying", or bitching over the loss? No, I haven't. But of course, you have to make it personal because you're losing the discussion. Sorry, but the only one who's butt hurt here is you.

The Netherlands is a country with a population of 16 million people. Brazil is a country with nearly 200 million people. For what The Netherlands has achieved in all it's years of World Cup football, for such a tiny country, providing world class players, I'm quite proud. Your country couldn't even win the World Cup at home, with all the bias in the world going their way. Not only couldn't they win, they got an absolute beating by Germany.

I can name you two Dutch teams who many consider the best of all time. Yes, I've seen Cruyff, Neeskens, van Basten, Bergamp and so forth, what's your point? That such a small country as Holland has some of the worlds best players ever? I know, amazing isn't it?

Thank you for the entertainment. This was almost just as entertaining as watching those Brazilians crying their eyes out on TV!

Well, I guess you have a point there. ;) To me, he just seems to hate the Dutch because of "Dick" van Persie.

I can be, but not in this case. In my point of view, the only reason someone would make a discussion personal is because they're losing the discussion. I don't think any of my replies have shown signs of me being butt hurt in any way, shape or form. I think "we" got pretty lucky making it to the semi-finals in the first place. It's not like Holland has played good, except for the second half against Spain, which I think said more about Spain, not about how good Holland was.

Just watch the Heat fans argue.

Nobody is perfect everyone says and does stupid things, expect Heat fans. They are perfect and everyone that doesn't think alike is a hater.

I find it amusing that you can't accept other's opinion of what transpired, more so the manager's own decision, that only shows you still can't get over the loss and would defend your own interpretation of that situation.

Yet here you are still continuing to argue about the loss because players choked.

You also can't accept confirmation of facts confirmed.

I have no problems accepting your opinion, but you present your opinion as a fact. Players not wanting to take the first penalty occurs pretty much every penalty shootout, I don't see how that's choking. Now you only see it as choking because they didn't win. So, because I defend my own interpretation of something that transpired, I can't get over the loss? The loss hasn't even bothered me, I just don't think anyone chocked. Especially considering nobody expected Holland to even make it past the group stage.

Because I disagree with your "logic", I'm butt hurt over the loss... Oh well, I guess everyone is entitled to their own childish opinion. And your opinion isn't factual, just like mine isn't. Now if you say that everyone who misses a penalty chokes, I could agree with you. Not wanting to take the first penalty, don't see how that's choking. I think it's taking responsibility for the fact you don't feel comfortable (or whatever the reason may be) taking the first penalty. Some players like to take the last penalty so they can bask in the glory of making the winning "goal".

Lol are you kidding me?

Not feeling comfortable, backing away from responsibility and breaking down in clutch situations is choking.

I can think of more reasons (which I made clear) to not want to take the first penalty other than not feeling comfortable. But say, a player is having a terrible game, takes the first penalty and misses, people will say he shouldn't have taken the penalty. If he doesn't take the penalty, people will say he choked... Not wanting to take the first penalty isn't shying away from a responsibility, or else the coach wouldn't have asked, he would have told someone to take the penalty. Not wanting to take the first penalty also isn't breaking down in a clutch situation, missing the penalty would be.

The logic here, mind boggling.

Phil: Scottie, Mike is out, gonna take the last free throws?
Scottie: Nah, let Rodman take em.

Anywho, sucky loss, the country is proud none the less. Sucks to be the argentinian defender who tore his anus defending that offensive set by Robben.

So we have a repeat of the 1986 & 1990 WC finals.

Predictions?

Mine:
Germany

I just can't pick against the Germans after how well they've played in this tournament.

I will actually be cheering for Argentina to win on the day though.

Germany for 3-0 at least.

You should have had a 3rd place prediction as well.

I will pick Netherlands on that.

Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup - Discussion

Sat Jul 12, 2014 4:14 pm

I wasn't sure if people really cared about the third place game though. :P

It's rather pointless. Especially when it's between two teams that thought they could actually win the tournament. Such a let down for them.

Sure Brazil may want to use it to get some pride back, but I wouldn't be surprised to see both teams use reserve players.

Sat Jul 12, 2014 5:39 pm

Robben should have been the player of the tournament. I expect him go out with a remarkable performance in his most likely last WC match.

Plus, I just want to enjoy the scenario in Brazil if they lose this one in a bad way :D

Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup - Discussion

Sat Jul 12, 2014 8:22 pm

From what I've read no side is eager to play for the 3rd place. It's somehow remarkable. When Germany failed to reach the final game at home in 2006, people still went crazy about that match for the 3rd place. Our team was heavily motivated to win the game to close the tournament with a positive attitude because the felt like they owed it to the people.
I hope Brazil is up for a fight. My favourite for 3rd are still the Dutch. Final game will be a close one. I pick a 1-0 or 2-1 in favour of Germany.

I think James Rodriguez would be a good choice. Top scorer and one of the best goals of the tournament.

But I'm sure either Muller or Messi will win it, depending on which team wins the final.

2 - #BRA have not lost consecutive matches on home soil since 1940; 0-3 v #ARG in Feb '40 and 3-4 v #URU in March '40. Nuts.

Ouch. Clearly they failed because the coach wouldn't combine the awesome powers of Fred and Jo on the pitch together. :shake:

Surprisingly Argentina playing as good as Germany. Their defense is outstanding. That Higuain miss is probably gonna haunt him forever if they lose. Kroos also making some key mistakes.

If I had to bet now, It probably be 50/50.

Yeah, I laughed when Higuain got destroyed by Neuer and had the foul called against him.

It's all about taking your chances and Gotze was the only one to do it today. Congrats to Germany, the best team all tournament.

Unlucky for Argentina. The only time they were behind in a match was in the final 10 minutes of the final.

Best Young Player (U21): Paul Pogba - Will run France's midfield

Well, at least I got Pogba and Italy right.

Not really sure why Messi was voted as the best player. Would have thought Hames, Robben or Muller would have been a better choice
