They had some innovative ideas and once some proper explanations were put out there, their approach did make a little more sense, even if it wasn't necessarily any more appealing. Their stance came across as arrogant, they did a poor job explaining some of the decisions they made and some of the changes were too drastic and should've been phased in. You could probably say they got ahead of themselves and misjudged what the consumer liked and wanted.

Wii U is not going to be a #2 this generation. They will be a niche #3 for the foreseeable future with the lack of people buying the system or games coming out for it.
Sat Aug 17, 2013 4:05 am
Yeah. They jumped the gun trying to make a Wii with better graphics, possibly thinking that was what their console needed. I think the only way it could beat out the competition is with great unique titles.
If they really want to innovate again, using some kind of vr interface with their moron sensing capabilities could put them at the top again. Like oculus rift but as a console.

I fully support this technology.

It seems like most of the big developers are already starting to pass it over, too. They have some strong first party franchises of course in Mario and Zelda, but as I understand it their next games aren't out until next year anyway.

because it made me laugh

I jokingly said WiiU because things went just terrible for m$ after E3 before waking up and actually listening to the market. Now, I think it could have been WiiU at #2, if they kept to insist on all that craps. LoL
Sun Aug 18, 2013 11:29 am
Even if Microsoft had stuck to their guns it would've been an uphill battle for the Wii U to be #2, with major developers shying away from it and no prominent first party games coming out for it for another year or so.

I could agree but imo there was pretty good possibility though. Sony dominating M$ in sales, and Nintendo attacking niche market with distinctive price advantage at about $150. Might not have happened instnatly but gradually, I think there was great possibility. I mean M$ was pretty crazy trying to control used game market, more expensive console price, not allowing rentals... I almost could swear they were gonna sink to the bottom of ocean if they stuck to their original agenda.
Sun Aug 18, 2013 11:43 am
There were still a lot of fanboys declaring their support and even defending the most controversial aspects of their original approach, though.
Sun Aug 18, 2013 11:48 am
I think stonecold realization would have kicked in at some point even with M$ fanbois because market was gonna favor Sony hugely, turning all developers back against them.
WiiU is a pretty much failure and I think they should have stuck to their fanbase of party/casual gamers. But I would still give it a try at $150 price range, lol, tho it means nothing.
Sun Aug 18, 2013 11:59 am
Perhaps, but never underestimate the dedication and myopia of fanboys.
Sun Aug 18, 2013 12:53 pm
nintendo would be the best third party dev in the world if they would just quit making shit systems lol

They more or less have: NSMBU, Nintendo Land, Mario Kart 8, Wii *, etc.
The problem is there's no immediate and blatantly innovative hook like there was motion control, incredible confusion ("the new tablet controller for the Wii" is among the things said on places like CNN, NBC, Jimmy Fallon, etc.), far more and cheaper competition in the casual market (phones), a legitimate competitor within the same retail space (Kinect) and no price advantage against the entrenched 360/PS3. (And barely even one against the PS4.)
This doesn't even touch on the actual hardware itself.

Killer Instinct is a 720p game
On being asked how difficult or easy it was to run the game at 60 FPS at 1080p, the duo replied: “Technically we are running at 720p and 60 FPS.

why were there so few games that ran native 1080p on this generation of consoles and what are the chances that the next generation will continue to have 720p games?
Tue Sep 03, 2013 5:44 am
1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels
1280x720 = 921,600 pixels
I think that is the reason.
I see it like adding fancy shit to current games rather than games specifically built for NG. I certainly hope this generation sees more true HD games, but I can't tell the difference between NBA Street Homecourt at 720p or 1080p, other than the framerate issues at 1080p. So i'm happier with developers wanting to stick at 60fps and making that a goal.

Microsoft on Xbox One Vertical Orientation:
Panello revealed to GameSpot at the Tokyo Game Show, "We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk." He clarified that "it wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both".
The Xbox One isn't the only system to feature a slot loading drive; both the PlayStation 3--original and slim models--and PlayStation 4 have a similar design, and users are free to orient those consoles horizontally or vertically without risking damage to the console.
Panello stated that Microsoft discovered that "we found, interestingly enough, that 80 percent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally".
The Xbox One is scheduled for launch in North America, most European markets, Australia, and New Zealand on November 22 this year, with follow-up releases in Japan and the remaining European markets in 2014.

Are people still actually considering getting this? And if so, why?
Sat Sep 21, 2013 10:44 am
Brand loyalty/Halo/TV stuff/Skype have been the explanations from friends getting it.
Sat Sep 21, 2013 12:10 pm
Exclusives, too. Plus, each system has an opportunity to get better as time goes on.
Sun Sep 22, 2013 1:03 am
brand loyalty is probably the biggest reason. second would be a lack of trust in sony. pretty much everyone i know thats getting the xbox one claims they dont trust the PSN at all.
