Little Help.....Stupid Question

Ok, I've only had Photoshop for a day and I'm just messing around with a few things...

But I had a stupid question......

*SuperStar* 's sig..... the Hakim Warrick one.......What pattern or what blending option did he use to get those lines across the logo? Also what pattern or blending option is it when you have individual boxes as the background.....?
