I'm not familiar with the incident in question, but it can be effective when there's a legitimate issue that may not necessarily be known by most of the members. I was railroaded out of a forum a while back for reasons I still don't fully understand. Mostly, people were building strawmen of my posts to make them look like strawmen themselves, on a forum that actually had a 'strawmen are illegal' policy. One of the mods that actually got along with me told me that there were discussions in the secret mods section of the forum pretty much from the day I registered wondering how they could railroad me out. Once they warned me for nothing in particular and I tried to clarify what the rule was, exactly, they stitched me up for 'lawyering', despite the earlier statement by the same mod that it is on the communicator to make himself clear, not the one being communicated with. I wanted to quote all the contradictions and flame out, just so other members could see what had happened, but they banned me before I could.
