Fat kid obliterates bully

Schools do zero tolerance for one reason and one reason only, it protects school administrators. If they don't suspend both the kids for fighting the parents of the one with the busted legs are going to sue and win because the administrators didn't provide a "safe environment" and the ones with the fat kid are going to sue and win because the administrators didn't stop the bullying.

With zero tolerance and all these suspensions set down in writing when people come complaining about anything they can point to it in the school policy and say "I wish I could, but those are the rules and we have to follow them."

They also want to get away from situations where say the star quarterback beats up some kid nobody knows exists and the Vice Principal who's also the head football coach waives it away with "that's just boys being boys."

This is the same reason they immediately suspend and often have arrested anyone who mentions the words "gun" or "kill" or "bomb" or "knife" or "Carlos Mencia" if they didn't and something actually went wrong they're blamed for this. Otherwise it only pisses off the lone parent while the rest are all "our kids were protected! Yay!"

Just look at the guy facing criminal sexual conduct charges, 20 years in prison and being put on the sex offender registry for editing a comedy video and posting it on YouTube. Nobody cares that the prosecutor is an insane authoritarian or that the administrators were incompetent, the parents are all "LOCK HIM UP AND THROW AWAY THE KEY! THANK YOU PROSECUTOR AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR PROTECTING OUR KIDS!"

Apparently the kid who filmed the incident and subsequently uploaded the video has also been suspended. A few people on talkback radio and the like have placed the blame on the bullied kid simply because he's bigger; apparently his actions were inexcusable and he should've remained a punching bag for his peers.

I'm glad I don't listen to that talkback shit. It obviously wasn't an isolated incident and quite frankly, things could have been a lot worse. If such harsh penalties are going to be in place for self defense, then the teachers need to become more liable when it comes to bullying. In a factory setting, if someone has an accident because they're not wearing the right protective gear, the heat goes on the supervisor for not policing the safety hazard. Same should happen with the teachers if they continue to have that zero tolerance policy to violence I think... (edit) if that makes sense.

Good on the Mum for being appalled at her son's behaviour and not blaming the victim for the innocent. The expert opinion that walking away is the best option, as well as the whole "equal to the threat" aspect of acceptable retaliation, still strikes me as being foolish or at least a bit narrow minded. I'd agree it's the ideal outcome, but not feasible in all situations where there is bullying.

Equal to the threat is a punch to the face. Which is going to escalate the issue, not end it.

There is one thing I believe from Richard's interview and that is that I think he was bullied in the past. The rest however seemed pretty weak. The fact that the taller kid was clearly backing him up shows to me that he wasn't the one getting picked on in this instance.
