Milestone Threads

Postby Ruff Ryder on Fri Nov 28, 2003 6:51 am

Okay.....Hmmmm......Well, I was wondering about milestone threads being created and stuff. I was gonna make one when I get to a thousand posts, but they now seem to draw alot of negative attention. Like oldschoolfool's. I wonder if it really matters. Like say if Lebron James made a 1000 post thread it would have to be locked as soon as it was started. He'd get flamed. On the contrary, if someone say Yohance did a 2000 post thread he'd get congrats and stuff. Should they be continued or stopped? I know that even spammers would make ones because they dont see themselves as spammers.

I guess it depends who you ask. Some people feel they're overdone and should be restricted to major milestones for prominent posters. If a respectable member who always add to the discussion and positive atmosphere of the forum wants to give a shoutout to various people when they reach 1000 posts, I don't see a problem with it.

Anything before 1000 is probably a little much. I post so often I prefer not to make milestone posts, though I felt 5000 was significant.

I agree they're worthless, but bragging is fun and thus I wouldn't ban them.

However, the bigger point here is perhaps the double standard. Praise and a merry ol' time for one while verbal assaults, a questioning of post counts and locking a thread for another. It's like the Leninists using Marxism to draw in the masses.

hey Ben, have you ever heard of Godwin point ? Cause I think you're coming close to it here :) I agree with some points of what you say, but the comparison with Communism is so bitter and sarcastic that i wonder whether it's really ironical :?:

As the self proclaimed greatest poster of all time said, bragging is fun. And the boy is reading and getting an education, so let him have his 15 seconds of intellectual internet fame!

Peace out

i like the threads... i don't realy see why they should be baned, exept if it's a post that's an acknowledged spamer/flamer makes, and he himself get's flamed for it. such things makes this place loose some of it's astoundingly good atmosphere (note the small sarcasm).
it's (almost) always nice with such threads. but if a thread would end up as an flame-war thanx to some hopeless people, it should be locked, that's all realy.
it's a great way to improve the atmosphere around here... just like the 'Get to Know Each Other Thread'

i'd say keep it (Y)

Not to mention they are trite and fruitless...and only serve to incite unrest and hostility. However, im asuming that is what the poster was trying to do...which may be a way for them to amuse themselves? Hilarious stuff then, i guess...

Thug, I don't know whether you are saying that about that the parallels between Communism (specifically the Leninist style) and things in our Community. But I assure you that I'm not trying to incite "unrest and hostility" (an interesting choice of words in themselves...) just attempting to light a path we could be headed down.
As the self proclaimed greatest poster of all time said

This is a lie. I never did any such thing, I proclaimed Boris Car the greatest of all time.
And the boy is reading and getting an education, so let him have his 15 seconds of intellectual internet fame!

I am not an intellectual, and I do not wish to be one. I am just seeing parallels. It's all about the parallels.
