Please help me with my diploma thesis - two questions

I'm currently writing my diploma thesis and would like to include an empirical study for which I need many participants. Please answer the following questions (write down a few words / some short sentences)

1) Your association towards the term "Native American / Indian"

2) Your associations / your knowledge towards and of "Native Americans and alcohol"

I don't really get the first question, but I'll give it a shot.

What I think of when I hear the term native american/indian? Christopher Columbus making trades with them, gold, lots of it. I also think of Chile & Argentina for some reason. Also think of indians in minimal clothing in the Amazones that are still unknown to the outside world & vice versa.

My knowledge towards native americans & alcohol? Not much I suppose, I guess a lot of them are social drinkers & the a handful are alcoholics who beat on their kids when they speak at night. I suppose it's also quite easy to obtain alcohol.

I hope that helped in some way, perhaps brighter folks could help you out, I just wrote whatever came up.

1.) I think of the people who were here originally, had their land stolen from them by white settlers, and have basically been oppressed ever since then.

2.) Native Americans have very low tolerance to alchohol (I think?) and even a little bit can fuck them up beyond belief. I don't think they are any bigger of alchoholics then any other race, although it depends on the person of course.

1) Original occupants of the Americas before the immigration of Caucasians and the rise of industrialization, intensifying the oppression of Native Americans and downplaying the recognition of culture and tradition. Present day, high discrimination and racism of Native Americans by Caucasians and other ethnic groups. Conversely, Native Americans are granted special monetary benefits via the Canadian government, partially leading to high unemployment among Native Americans and frequent visits to the casinos. The portrayal of Native Americans are generally negative in today's society, describing them as lazy drunks, thieves, and compulsive gamblers.

2) Viewed as heavy drinkers; a lot of associations with "moonshine," and "Lysol." Cheap and high volume alcohol are general assumptions.

1) When I think of Native American I think of the typical indians against the early American settlers. "Redskins" with arrows, lots of giant feathers tucked in their hair and smoking the peace pipe.
Also reserves and casinos.

2)I don't associate alcohol and American Indians, strangely. I have never thought of them as an ethnic group that drinks too much. It seems my assumption is very wrong, judging form the previous comments! .

1.) When I think of Native Americans I think that they are an oppressed people that have been constantly betrayed and deceived by Caucasians. They were not inferior to the Caucasians as commonly misrepresented. In many ways, their cultures were more advanced than the Caucasians, especially the Mayans. Caucasians did not win by guns, they won by disease and treachery. Not to mention Native Americans did adopt guns in the later days. Half of the Native American population was eliminated by small pox and other diseases. I think all the American nations should have some major reparations given to Native Americans. They were in America first.

Reserves and casinos come to mind, as well as the episode "The Son Also Draws" by Family Guy.

2.) I have no idea, really. I never knew of such association.

Well, maybe it could be interesting to add a younger point of view.

1) I think of resourceful people. I think of expert hunters and fishers. Deer and other animal skins, and feathers. I also think of how they were decieved and mistreated by explorers, and were killed by diseases brought over by settlers. I also think of casinos and tobacco.

2) I never really thought of Native Americans as alcoholics, more as smokers of tobacco.

1. native american / indian - I think of people that don't pay for taxes and education when everyone else does. I think that's bullshit imo. You don't see asian people in asia giving themselves the benefit of not paying taxes because it's their land.

2. native americans / alcohol - i think its blown out of proportion. i know a lot of natives that live a life without drinking.. so yeah, not a big issue to me it seems.
