Retiring Nicknames

Postby EGarrett on Sat Nov 01, 2003 2:46 am

WARNING: Don't read this post if you are allergic to the rantings of obsessive basketball fans.

With the And1 Mixtape Tour on TV all the time...everybody's snapping up nicknames. Unfortunately...some people feel the need to to use nicknames that...quite frankly...they shouldn't. Examples...

White Chocolate. Sorry Randy...but the name is very very cliche at this point. It was pretty uncreative when they re-christened Jason Williams with it in 1999. You're going to have to get a new name. I recommend Bubbles.

The Helicopter. The name belongs to Herman Knowlings...who played in the 50's and 60's. But Melvin Levitt felt the need to take it. If his name is Levitt...and he can jump...then why on earth didn't he call himself..or someone call him...the Levitator? Anyway...John Humphreys ALSO wanted to be called Helicopter on the And1 Tour this summer. I can't keep track and it just feels like someone else's name.

Magic. Daryl Dorsey...no. The basketball gods ought to strike you down. There's only one Magic...and it ain't you pal.

The Big O...for some reason Oliver Miller tried to take this from Oscar Roberston. Maybe it was attached to Oscar's dinner plate.

Know what I mean?

I know...I refuse to call him Magic. Earvin Johnson will always be associated with it...

It seems like 'White Chocolate' is tacked onto every white player who plays a fancy style. Someone once suggested that if Florida's high jumping David Lee ever makes the NBA...he be christened "Vanilla Sky." That I would like.

Anybody else have some nickname that were "stolen" or should be retired?

If you think so...PM a Mod about it...

I hate these nicknames like K-Mart, T-Mac, J-Will....and the list goed on. I tought nicknames are a special thing, like a word which reminds you of this kind of player, like Michael Air Jordan, Magic Johnson, Dr J

Heh...it's kinda weird, like how do you call Kenyon if you scream it out like it was in the ol' days Micheal Air Jordan!? Kenyon K-mart Martin?
and names like K-mart,T-mac and others will make Patrick Ewing P-ew?or Micheal Jordan will be M-Jo...the list is endless...

I haven't come across any examples of people trying to steal nicknames, but I find it disgraceful that someone would do that. I would never want to be referred to by someone else's nickname...

Just thinking about the lack of creativity as mentioned above, with the T-Macs and the K-Marts and the P-Ews (LMAO) I got thinking about Italian sensation who people may remember form the 2000 Olympics: Gregor Fucka (pronounced Fooshka)... would they nickname him "G-Fuck"? :D

i disagree with that last one, half man half amazing got his nik b4 VC, and VC was called may name and that is not his "official", somethinglike Vinsanity and Air Canada,
I also belive that T-mac was the first to have anything of that sort and maybe Martin has K-Mark coz he's waiting to get some sort of a deal from K-mart store?!
