Best Dunk Contest

Postby VCFAN on Wed Sep 17, 2003 2:47 am

What years in order do u guys think were the best Dunk Competitions?
Mine personally were

1)I think 2000 where Vince blew everyone away
2)2003 Where J-Rich and D- Mason totally kicked ass
3) A few in the 80's where Jordan and dominique had a rivalry and spudd webb kicked some ass.

2000 by far, I think the Jordan-Wilkins contest in 88 is overrated...the dunking creativity of today is way better then back in the 80´s

It's true that the dunks themselves are way better and more difficult to perform now than they were in the 80's. But what made the ones in the 80's so special is the rivalries and the stories behind them.

you were still in your mom's tummy or perhaps a little sperm when this was all happening. you probably see these replays on espn classic or wherever thinking they can't jump as high as they can now or these dunks are not as hard as the ones now. the coverage, picture, sound quality is nothing like how it is today, but don't let that take away from the actual dunks.

Mj and 'nique were arguably the games best dunkers at the time...also they were all stars of the nba and both were very popular players....the MJ and 'nique faceoff was a few years in the waiting because of injuries... all this contributed to a highly anticipated dunk contest, which did not disappoint. the dunks those 2 did laid the groundwork to what the dunk contest has become. a lot of the power dunks done (carter, richardson) in the current dunk contests are spinoffs/variations of what wilkins did in '88. same with the grace and gliding of MJ (desmond mason). those fortunate to see this contest live got a big treat. a video replay with the cheesy, dramatic music in the background could never replicate the experience of watching this contest live.

good points there. IMO- the dunks in the 80's were definitely more creative then today. There were guys jumping over chairs, people, dunking 2 balls, etc... Why were the dunk contests in the 90's 'bland'? because most of the dunks made up in 80's were being recycled and fans were not excited by seeing the same dunks over and over again. the dunks from 80's was the golden age of the drunk contest if you ask me. the only creative dunk i can remember that the 90's had was the isiah rider dunk when he put the ball between his legs in the air then slammed
it down. that opened up a new window of creativity. that combined with the alley oop have made these past few dunk contests entertaining.

because the creativity is better thesedays? did I say they couldnt jump as high back then as now? NO.....so read 1st before you make a idiot out of yourself. And yeah I saw them on tape....and so did you or ESPN classic...U wasnt there in Chicago in 1988, so dont talk like you saw more then me cause you really didnt. tell me how VC, J-Rich or D. Masons through the legs dunks are a spin off of an MJ or Nique dunk. OR VC's elbow hang.

2000, and the second one was when Spud Webb kick Dominique Wilkens ass in dunking...this is a special one cuz it reminds me that u don't have to be tall to dunk..and the third one is Dominique and Jordan and finally
Brent Barry wearing practise jeresy and jumped from the ft line....(Y).. never seen a white jump so high

are you saying the '88 contest is overrated because of lack of creativity? and only because of that? if this is the case, please explain on how the creativity is better now then it was in the 80's. i have no problem agreeing with you if you can give me a valid explanation.

And yeah I saw them on tape....and so did you or ESPN classic...

actually ON espn2, come fly with me, etc

U wasnt there in Chicago in 1988, so dont talk like you saw more then me cause you really didnt.

i wasn't in the 'madhouse on madison' but i was in my living room in chicago watching the LIVE broadcast. where were you? also i had been following the bulls the past few years leading to the contest (due to my dad being a big bulls fan) so in additional to watching the actual event live, i knew of the anticipation and hype of the '88 contest.

tell me how VC, J-Rich or D. Masons through the legs dunks are a spin off of an MJ or Nique dunk. OR VC's elbow hang.

sorry i should have said mj & 'nique were strong influences to the participants of later dunk contests
did I say they couldnt jump as high back then as now? NO.....so read 1st before you make a idiot out of yourself.

name calling such as this is unnecessary and usually provokes flame wars. i'm providing opinions here backed up with some kind of evidence without any personal comments aimed at you. what about you? forgive me for assuming on the jumping comment.

And what has the video/sound quality have to do with the Dunks?...

with the advancement in technology, broadcasts of the recent dunk contests are much better then in the past. multiple angles, sharper images of dunk replays, etc allow the viewer a better/enjoyable viewing experience. you could understand/see better how amazing the dunk was. as opposed to the 80's where you would see maybe 2 angles and a cloudy replay of each. one may even think some of the dunks in 80's would be more creative/amazing or less creative/amazing if it was viewed using today's technology. so yes, video/sound quality is relevant with dunks

some pointless stuff you wrote there mate

If I had to pick a top 5:

1. 1988
2. 2000
3. 2003 (would have been 2nd if it had been longer)
4. 1991
5. 2001

tell me how VC, J-Rich or D. Masons through the legs dunks are a spin off of an MJ or Nique dunk.

Orlando Woolridge performed a between-the-legs dunk in the 1984 dunk contest. It wasn't as impressive as some of the recent between-the-legs dunks, but it was still a great dunk.

I meant if you compare the 2000+ SDC with the one back in 1988, then the creativity is way better, I dont see anything special in a player who does like 4 windmills, but I have to admitt I liked the Jordan dunks

actually ON espn2, come fly with me, etc

great (y)
i wasn't in the 'madhouse on madison' but i was in my living room in chicago watching the LIVE broadcast. where were you? also i had been following the bulls the past few years leading to the contest (due to my dad being a big bulls fan) so in additional to watching the actual event live, i knew of the anticipation and hype of the '88 contest.

that doesnt mean that you saw more dunks that I did, the tape that I have is a copy of the live thing so its the exact same thing

name calling such as this is unnecessary and usually provokes flame wars. i'm providing opinions here backed up with some kind of evidence without any personal comments aimed at you. what about you? forgive me for assuming on the jumping comment.

you also want to make a idiot out of me because of our differences but you dont say it, I do. And the problem is that you asume to much

I dont need the greatest camera angles to see if a dunk is good or not. Im a big fan of the dunk, and Im a dunker myself so I know how hard or how much creativity is needed to do these dunks.

Shut up 88 was great.

hooray for you if you think its great... , cause I dont agree

the whole point is that if you compare the 2k+ and the 1988 SDC, then I think...listen, I THINK that the 88 was overrated...I wont change my mind about it

Agreed Kobe4MVP!

i was only 2 when it was on the '88 contest, but ive seen enuff highlights, tapes, footage etc. etc of the 88 contest.

and yes, the more recent ones do have a lot more creativity to them.
especially the J-Rich ones, IMO the best dunker in the NBA

I dont see anything special in a player who does like 4 windmills,

Im a big fan of the dunk, and Im a dunker myself so I know how hard or how much creativity is needed to do these dunks.

he jumped off two feet, did a full windmill (not cheapo style), his head was at rim level, and the dunks went down clean. this being done with one hand and then both. with your credentials, i figure you would appreciate the difficulty/creativity in 'nique's dunks

that doesnt mean that you saw more dunks that I did

i never mentioned i saw more dunks then you did

the tape that I have is a copy of the live thing so its the exact same thing

not exactly. i've seen taped live coverage of jfk being assasinated but many would agree that it was not the same experience as actually watching the event live as it happened

you also want to make a idiot out of me because of our differences but you dont say it, I do. And the problem is that you asume to much

actually the problem here is that you assume too much. true- our opinions differ on this subject. but just because i don't agree with you on this topic doesn't mean i'm making this a personal matter. this is a public forum and naturally there will be disagreements. IMO it would be boring if everyone agreed with one another. and also i would hope the people whose opinions i don't agree with don't take it the wrong way and make it a personal issue. but i guess i'm hoping for too much

I didnt say it isnt difficult....I know its a very hard dunk, but doing in like 4 times in a SDC makes it look boring.
i never mentioned i saw more dunks then you did

maybe not, but in my eyes you act like you saw more stuff then me because you saw it live and I was still a baby back then.

not exactly. i've seen taped live coverage of jfk being assasinated but many would agree that it was not the same experience as actually watching the event live as it happened

well...I have a copy of the Live thing so I dont know what you saw. And ofcourse watching it live is more exciting then watching it on tape, but back then people didnt knew that players these days do lobs between the legs and stuff...so the dunks that MJ and Nique did were unbelieveable for them....I mean if you compare the 2000 and the 1988 SDC, then you will see that the 2000 one has better creativty

actually the problem here is that you assume too much. true- our opinions differ on this subject. but just because i don't agree with you on this topic doesn't mean i'm making this a personal matter. this is a public forum and naturally there will be disagreements. please...you know if someone else would say that the one from 1988 was overrated, if you compare it with the 2000 one, then you wouldnt even reply.....you may say that its not true...but I know it :P
