Top 8 teams in East and West

Postby . on Wed Sep 17, 2003 12:08 am

Its a bit early, but I cant w8 till the next season starts...so what teams do U expect in the top 8 east and west?

WEST:
1-Los Angeles Lakers - 4 HOF in 1 team? says enough
2-San Antonio Spurs - Last years champs, did some nice offseason
transactions
3-Dallas Mavericks - Nowitzki, Nash, Finley and Jamison in 1 team? sounds pretty good, however the Spurs and the Lakers made bigger transactions.
4-Sacramento Kings - Always were dangerous the past 4 years, nice addition with Brad Miller...should still be a top team in the West if everybdy stays healty
5-Minnesota Timberwolves - they had 1 of their best if not the best offeason in their franchise, by bringing solid veterans as Michael Olowokandi, Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell, but imo they still have a lack of playoff experience, so I dont expect them out of the 1st round
6-Phoenix Suns - good young and talented team, will have 3 stars next season in Amare, Stephon and Shawn....no doubt a good team
7-Portland Trailblazers - hmmm....same story as the pas few years, loaded with talent but dont know how to use it....I dont expect much from them
8-Houston Rockets - Came close last year, but still wernt good enough....I think Yao Ming will be a better player then last year and same with Steve Francis.....a up and coming team

East will come later.....I dont feel like typing a bigass post :P

Ok, ill post what i think for both of them, starting with the west:
1 - Lakers, 4 HOF idd, im no lakers fan, but i would just love to see this great ballers play together, im no fan nor a hater i just wanna see some good ball :)
2 - Spurs, became even more solid then last year, duncan will have to carry the load though
3- Dallas, nice addition of jamison, they lost NVE though, they are good but lack an inside force(they have length but no force) to get up there with the big two
4 - Kings, another nice addition and long term replacement for divac in the person of miller, lost clark and turkoglu though, i think they missed the chance of a lifetime past year and they wont make it anymore
5 - Minny, big offseason, team chemistry will determine their outcome(if things work out they could overpower dallas and the kings and move up to n°3 imho)
6 - Blazers, like kobe4 said, lots of talent, too less chemistry, they should give Randolph a starting spot(trade sheed for a big C or something, or a star PG)
7 - Suns, kept their core, if amare continues to improve and matrix and starbury keep their level they will be just fine and could surprise/upset one of the above teams in the first round
8 - Rockets, Van Gundy will make them listen and will tune the game to Ming, who should improve(and will be tutored by Ewing right?)but Francis' play will be the key

Possible 8th place contender : Seattle, they cant be forgotten, Allen played like a superstar once he was in seattle and Lewis should finally get his game up another level and then they will be a force to be reckoned with(a shame the GS team fell apart, they could have been battling again for that 8th spot, denver will win more games but just not enough to contend for that final seed im afraid)

So i can only agree on kobe4's vision of the playoffs in the west, now the so much more difficult East:

1 - Nets, improved with Zo and kept kidd, Martin should only get better(if he doesnt become a crybaby for a max contract he definately doesnt deserve just yet)and it's time jefferson improves his jumper and becomes a legitmate(constant)threath
2 - Detroit, close call, they will give the Nets a tough opponent, just like the pacers will, they also improved, lost barry though but still will be very good, also have one of the best (defensive)coaches there is
3 - Pacers, lost miller but pollard is a solid replacement, couple of youngsters should only get better, if o'neal is a pro and deals with Carlisle, who is a good coach imho, they will be all right, if harrington and bender finally break out, they could move to the n°1 seed
4 - New Orleans(they aint gonna move west this season or am i wrong  ,if that happens just throw in the bulls instead), great team, they kept the Mashburn, Brown and Davis threath,i dont know what the effect of the loss of silas will be though
5 - Phillie, went trough a cuple of changes, but they should still easily be a top 6 team in the east, iverson gets older and wiser and if robinson can handle being second option they will do fine(jackson could be a good C in the east)
6 - Orlando, added Howard(but are likely to lose kemp?), dont know how it would work out with Gooden though(who imho can develop to a great PF), if mcgrady's back holds together, he alone will carry them to the first 8 in the east(if lue turns out to be great they could be even higher)

From now on it gets really hard imho, ill put the possible seeds in MY opinion, though it could turn out(and probably will) very different from what i will say here

7 - Raptors, if vince can produce they will definately be up here, if spared from injuries normally a certainty
8 - Celtics, pierce is just too good to be stopped that easily, if walker would only started to rebound again in stead of shooting 3's they could be a lot higher, cuz as a tandem they are too hard to stop

Then others who will fight for the 7th/8th seed(imho):
-Bulls, i would really like to see them in the playoffs, rather than the Celts, but i think they come up short just a little(unless Curry and Chandler become twin towers of the east, or even shaq towers ;) ),though they cant be underestimated, and maybe vince alone(with some help of alvin) aint good enough to stop scottie, jalen and jamal
- Washington, if arenas stays at the same level or improves and stackhouse gets back to his detroit-form, they will give the raps and celts a very hard time imho, but kwame should finally do his thing
- Miami, never underestimate a team with Riley, acquiring Odom was great, Butler is a good player, now Wade still has a lot to learn and normally Jones will be a starter(so unfortunately butler could go to the bench unless grant plays c and odom pf)

As much as most lebron fans would like to hear it, im afraid the cavs wont get a shot at the playoffs, bron will have a lot to learn and ricky should learn the word "team", but silas could get the job done and also Z is one of the better C's in the east(when healthy), sports are unpredictable and thats what makes them so exciting so im curious what the outcome of the season will be.
This wass a kickass post, way too long but hell, i still have a half week of vacation :D

I won't type my thoughts right now as I think we still have a month to go and trade & injuries can happen... However, I will try to post/create a thread about it...

with comments!

west
1 kings- maybe this is their year, maybe. the core has remained intact plus Big Brad should help out
2 spurs- duncan will lead the 'rebuilt' team to the division title
3 twolves- spree's career is rejuvenated. kg's happy he get an athlete on the wing
4 mavs- until cuban gets a legit big man, i can't put them in the top3 in a conference full of great big men
5 lakers- phil chooses to rest the vets down the stretch over home court advantage
6 suns- big 3 is progressing. joe johnson's the X factor here
7 rockets- francis/mobley struggle with jvg's new system, both become releuctant to defer to Yao
8 warriors- surprise pick! need to have at least one. it would make a great story after scrapping the last years core this offseason

east
1 pistons- can't go against my hometown. joe d gets exectutive of the year if hunter's career is reborn
2 nets- a healthy zo makes this team dangerous
3 pacers- regardless of what legend decides, the team will have a lot of talent
4 hornets- floyd definitley is the worst coach ever if he can't get the east's most talented team into the playoffs
5 celtics- another year with the same cast. jumaine jones is nice. if marcus banks is the real deal, look out
6 sixers- with big dog around, at least allen doesn't have the pressure of carrying the team on offense. with no larry brown around, i have my doubts
7 magic- gooden/howard basically have the same game, wonder how it will work out. Mcgrady prolly makes more bold predictions
8 bulls- :) chicago slides in the last spot. injurries hurt toronto & new york's playoff chances
Jump.
Scott Skiles answer to the question on how Eddy Curry can become a better rebounder

WEST

1. spurs - looks like a good 'team'. key word team.

2. lakers - a collection of such massive egos hasnt been seen since last years laker team  if phil can pull his magic i give them number one, easy, but it might take a few learning games and i dont know if patience is a word that bodes well with such players. good side - malone, payton and to an extent shaq have nothing to prove statistically anymore so maybe more willing to share.

3. dallas mavericks - nowitzki's only getting better and nowitzi and jamison at pf sf could be a beautiful pairing. nash is probably the happiest pg in the world.... no matter where he passes he hits a 20 ppg player :D

4. sac kings - quiet? yes. it feels like this is sacs last legit year for the championshipi, everyones getting younger and stronger or just plain stronger, and divac is getting old...... on the other hand, miller might surpirse, and a bibby and stojakovic still have much to give while cwebbs still in his prime

5. minny twolves - this is like a mini-la lakers. i really dont know if wally, cassell, sprewell and garnett can work together. looks good on paper though.

6. phoenix suns - 2 all stars, a potential all star, and a still productive former all star and #6 spot?! man, the west is deeeeep. if i could pick someone who can upset the big 4, phoenix is it though, the youngsters are growing and they're growing together, that is how to build a great team.

7. houston rockets - yao + franchise, you cant go wrong. management needs to build the team around them now with unselfish role players to compliment such and such games. trade rice, trade mobley, trade everybody, get smart players, hard workers, get basketball players. this team will stay in limbo unless that happens.

8. memphis grizzlies - my wild card  this team is beautiful on paper, and in time west will trade his spare wing players for the right deal, probably a big man.
???
pau
battier
miller
williams
oh god. west must be about ready to kill stu jackons. can you imagine how perfect milicic's name would look in that ??? ? sob. AND THEY TRADED THE PICK FOR OTIS FRICKING THORPE!!!!!!!!! on the other hand, they left vancouver, so you can expect stupidity from those with such resumes.

EAST

1. new jersey - zo, kmart, kidd. niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

2. detroit - if milicic can become the player he's expected to become: a franchise player, then detroit has a very very nice future and present chance. this team needs top 10 in the nba type go to guy and then they're set for legit champ contender.

3. new orleans - it all depends on baron, mash cant do it alone. very very nice complimentary cast.

4. new york knicks - only if mcd is healthy:
c. kurt thomas
pf. antonio mcdyess
sf. keith van horn
sg. allan houston
pg. howard eisley
bench:
c othella harrington
pf. lampe
sf. clarence weatherspoon
sg. shandon anderson
pg. charlie ward
somewhat undersized, i can see why they'd need van exel.... he could be effective with wing players lik houston and van horn and a post to run the offense through. hope lampe can play centre and send thomas and ward gs's way.

5. philly 76ers - can easily jump to 3. i am hesitant because they have no legitimate starting centre or power forward.

6. orlando magic - can also easily jump to 3. i like their build, and tmac can do magic, but they dont have a great point and most good teams do.

7. boston celtics - walker and pierce's cast is stagnant.

8. chicago bulls - nice mix of veterans and youth.

West
1.LA Lakers..i'll take lakers even though Kobe is in trouble...Malone,Shaq,Payton are all capable enough to fill out the scoring sheet for Kobe...if he was to go to jail...solid bench but could be more consistint..
2.SA Spurs....Duncan already won two..and i'm sure he'll want a third one..and with the additon of Nestrovic,Horry,Turkugulu,Mercer they should be at the top of Mid west division do doubt also this team also plays like a team great fundamental...don't be surprise if they win another championship next year

3. Dallas Mavs...Dallas can average 200 ppg if they wish but they'll never win a championship unless playing with good d..they can all score no doubt..Finley,Nowitzki,Nash,Jamision are rank top 45 in ppg...but bottom line no "D" no champioship....in this case also no Mid West division champion title...

4. Sacramento Kings..the 2002 season was there year...but they got stomp by Lakers and now are discourge..they are awsome but not as good and confident as the 2002 season..they're players are getting old espically Divac and Webber isn't good as he used to be...now it seems that this team is falling from the championship contender

5. Minnestota T-Wolves...don't know if the players know each other enough but if they do this will be the team to beat...will Spree's,Cassell,Szcerbiak and this is just a team that u can't double team Garnett anymore with deep scoring from the starting 5 to the bench (Hudson) if they work out the chemistry..that's a big if..They'll be one of the improved teams in the league..and don't be surprise if they get past the first rd..(finally)

6. Portland T-Blazers...they're like the wolves last season..but at least Minny made sum moves...and maybe it's time they just faced up to the truth and changed the team nickname to hamsters.after all, they keep going around and around in the same wheel..they reach the playoffs many time but mostly gets elimated from the first rd...don't be discourage though Portland fans they're may be hope..with the talent Woods,Randolph, Outlaw on their team they're bound to have sumthing..they just have to wait until Davis retires...and wait till RaShWeed goes into fa to get rid of the cap then those players will have big minutes

7.Phoenix Suns...definatly one of the more entertaining team in the league..Amare's althleticism,Marbury's crossovers and floaters,Marions wicked jams...there's no telling how far this team will go...Penny can still do sum dishing...Marbury is dishing along with his scoring...Amare wins ROY and Marion just gets into all-star game..this is truly one of the more fun teams to watch in the league...if the bench step up more...joe johnson starts scoring more pts off the bench..Jacobsen knocks down those threes consistantly they'll be a very good team....

8.Houstan Rockets/Seattle Sonics..both of them has good chance of making the playoffs...i like Sonics cuz of Allen...and if Ridnour and Collison steps up as rookies and help Sonics they'll have a good chance for playoffs..but they must 1. resign Dronjbak and 2.make sure Lewis is worth his money...if he can play like two seasons ago or better it'll help Sonics big time...Brent Barry is the only guy u can truth with roles..he knows wut his roles is and is very capable for even bigger roles...but the three main point is wut will help Sonics if they wanna be in the playoffs

Rockets...looks like Yao has bulked up big time this offseason...he's a great center but he's still years from dominating the C..still needs continue bulking up and tough mentality...if Yao gets better,Francis and Mobley decides to share the ball more to Yao this team will become alot better..and they will need serious pts off the bench..cuz their bench don't scare many teams...bottom line give the ball to him and let him isolate and do his moves...

Western Conference
1. L.A. Lakers - Say what you want, but if Big Game Bob Horry's shot goes down at the end of Game 5 last year, the Lakers are four-time defending champions. Remember, Dallas was openly terrified of L.A. all season, and New Jersey was overmatched by the West's top five seeds. That said, the Lakers needed three things this offseason: a legitimate power forward, a greater defensive presence on the perimeter, and, as always, depth. Well, they got all three, and barring an injury to Kobe or the Diesel, the road to the 2004 championship goes through Los Angeles.
2. San Antonio Spurs - The defending champs surrounded their young nucleus of Duncan/Parker/Ginobili with the same types of ragtag gamers that got it done this year. It'll take some time, but Popovich gets the Spurs atop the Midwest again; it just won't be enough to beat a hungry Lakers squad.
3. Sacramento Kings - Basically the same roster, plus Brad Miller, minus Hedo, JJ, Pollard, and Keon. Doesn't it seem like Sacramento's window of opportunity is closed now? Everything fell their way last year, up until Webber blew out his knee against Dallas. Could you see the Kings beating the Lakers or Spurs in a seven-game series this year? It just doesn't seem possible. Their best player's one of the worst clutch performers in NBA history, and Mike Bibby (their best clutch player) isn't good enough to carry this team to the Finals without big game help.
4. Dallas Mavericks - Malone and Mourning turned down Mark Cuban in the off-season, and in doing so, essentially rendered the Mavs the same team as last year. We'll see as the season goes on, but the Antawn Jamison trade didn't exactly blow my socks off. The Mavs gave up their most clutch playoff performer for the quintessential "good stats on a bad team" guy. And they still don't have that physical, interior presence.
5. Minnesota Timberwolves - This team looks great on paper, don't they? Flip Saunders is one of the best coaches in the NBA, and he's probably capable of convincing his new stars to adopt the "team concept" and make a run at the Midwest. If he isn't, Kevin Garnett's first-round playoff record falls to 0-8.
6. Phoenix Suns - They won't surprise anyone this year. The big three (Steph, Matrix, Amare) should only get better playing together, and Amare's a year or two away from making The Leap.
7. Houston Rockets - Here's to Utah's replacement in this year's NBA Playoffs. Things seem to be going well for the Rockets: new coach, new arena, and new uniforms. (I don't know how much I like the new threads, though :?) Van Gundy wants Yao to have the ball more, and he's expecting a breakout season from Eddie Griffin. And did I mention they already have Francis and Mobley?
8. Portland Trailblazers - Here's a team troubled enough to fall a couple spots from last year, but still talented enough to stick around in the playoff mix. Portland should be close to where they were last year, failing slightly to reach their previous win total. The reason? No Scottie Pippen. He wasn't even their fifth most athletic/talented player, but Pip held the team together. Who's going to assume the leadership role now? Zach Randolph? Qyntel Woods? Don't hold your breath, Blazers fans.
