Free Agency in September

Postby Andrew on Thu Sep 04, 2003 3:47 pm

Glancing through this list, it doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of significant players left unsigned.

Some names of note include:

Kenny Anderson
Mateen Cleaves
Dion Glover
Tim Hardaway
Tyrone Hill
Jim Jackson
Mark Jackson
Stephen Jackson
DerMarr Johnson
Shawn Kemp
Voshon Lenard
Danny Manning
Jelani McCoy
Lee Nailon
Charles Oakley
Robert Pack
Don Reid
Byron Russell
Steve Smith
Rod Strickland
Jason Terry
Jacque Vaughn
Shammond Williams
Walt Williams

Not a bad list of role players and extra bodies, but Terry is really the only important free agent left. Fortunately for the Hawks he's a restricted free agent so they stand a good chance of keeping him.

The rest of the players are guys who should be able to find a job this year, luxury tax pending. Danny Manning and Tim Hardaway may choose retirement, while Shawn Kemp, Charles Oakley, Steve Smith and Rod Strickland are also getting on in years. Last I heard DerMarr Johnson's career is still on shaky ground, but he might be back.

EDIT: Added Stephen Jackson, whom I somehow overlooked on the list of free agents.

there's some rumors that steve smith will sign with neither hawks, lakers, and heat. also, utah is planning to sign jason terry(which is impossible), and stephen jackson.
i think spurs should add 1 or 2 players to their roster to strength the bench.

Unrestricted, according to NBA.com.

I remember reading that Denver might also be an option for Steve Smith. He'd probably start in Atlanta, Denver and Utah. His role would be very limited on the Lakers. He's already got a championship ring (and he won it as a seldom used reserve), so perhaps he'll look to finish his career with a decent season or two on an up and coming team.

Utah could sign Jason Terry, but Atlanta would surely match the offer. Stephen Jackson would be a good addition for teams in need of a swingman - for some reason, I left him off the list.

I'm sure Voshon will catch on with a team before the offseason is through, or if not by then, sometime in the first month of the season.

Voshon Lenard has proven to be nothing more than a ball-hog on a bad team. :?

I'm kind of bummed that Jim Jackson hasn't gotten an offer anywhere. He definitively proved that he still has game left im him while playing for the kings.

The luxury tax has seen quite a few capable veterans scrambling to find employment.

Alston's another player I left off the list. Seems like Alston is set to become this era's Chucky Brown, bouncing from one team to another with every offseason.

Saw that. I wonder if he's going to start the season 0/20 or whatever it was in his first stint with the Hawks.

when i play nba live, the spurs is ranked 11th as a overall ratings, so i wish spurs will sign with free agent who's rated about 75 to 80.
Demarr Johonson will be the nice choise, since they've lost danny ferry, and stephan jackson(i mean, they will lose). Both of them were 3 point specialist, so i think demarr will fit pretty nicely. (Y)

It's Tyrone Hill and as the part he can't do anything...seems you only know all-star players(Tyrone was a all-star too),some over hyped rookies and few role players,Hill averaged 7 rebs and 5.6 rebounds last year (in 24.1 minutes) + he gave a big boost off the bench for the sixers (remember the winning streak)
