best duo ever

Postby magius on Sun Aug 24, 2003 7:47 am

i'd vote for hakeem / sampson but that didnt last very long......
i'd vote for rodman / laimbeer (if they were on the list, which they arent, cuz theres no room) because i like clowns, but rodman's hair makes me dizzy..........

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

its a tie between scottie/mj and admiral/duncan, and i think i'll have to go with scottie/mj by a hair of a hair, just because they can shut down the pg, sg, sf, even occasionally pf and very weak c's.

admiral/duncan cant guard the quicker players (but their help defense {blocks} more than makes up....)

i mean, imagine the possibility of prime scottie guarding tmac or kobe or kg straight up and having mj double while rodman humps you and longley watches  brilliant........

i think my top 3 would go something like this (and they are very close, i could easily be persuaded that my #3 is better than #2, etc., etc)

1. mj / scottie
2. magic / kareem
3. duncan / robinson

i had to trim the list which formerly included thomas/dumars, rodman/laimbeert, walker/pierce, etc. etc. so if ive forgotten anyone just post.

wilt/west must've been awesome, but i neve watched them on tape or otherwise so i'm bias.

definately mj and scottie.. in their primes, you had arguably the best defensive players in the league in the same team and the best offensive players as well.. they complemented each other so well..

I'd pick Shaq/Kobe......mainly coz they won 3 rings in a row

MJ was THE main player, while Shaq & Kobe both shared the lead

PIP was more of a lieutenant

Hmm This is tough one. I think it depends a bit how you wan't to look at it.

Shaq and Kobe are probably the best two as individuals. But they can't play together as well as Malone&Stockton.

Purely by results it probably is Shaq/kobe. But still i dont like to call them a duo.

uh... shaq was bigger than wilt, shaq 7'1" some where in the 300s and wilt 7'1" 275 lbs i believe. but whatever

I'd go shaq and kobe cause like others said, shaq=unstoppable and kobe=nearly unstoppable. but at first they didn't work together but now they work together great.

lol, forget that, everyones got their own opinion :P why can't we all be happy and mate like bunnies?

either way shaq is one of the greatest ever, no doubt, same with kobe if he keeps it up.

i like the concept behind stockton malone, but i dont like stockton malone  i reluctantly agree they were a great duo, greatest passer and greatest scorer (in terms of how many total pts/assts). for me, they were and aren't a versatile duo which bumps them out of top 5 contention. thats why i prefer scottie mj.... because they could adjust to whatever team they are playing against (defensively) with their length and quickness. larry bird/mchale was awesome too, bird was a bit slow, but he made up for it in anticipation..... remember the famous thomas steal in the finals game (6?)? and mchale was awesome inside.

but now when i think about it my initial choice is strengthened....... scottie and mj were the most flexible duo and that makes them incredibly undeniably unique, which easily makes them my personal best, their twin versatility is unmatched beyond anything the nba has ever had or has.

by the by, i'm not a chicago die hard, in fact, i think the only thing that made mj bearable was scottie, so my opinion is strictly, purely based upon my unconcious bias's, misconceptions, ignorance, and plain dumb stupidity.

Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp were great. They might not have been the best, but they were on of the most exciting to watch. They were kind of like what K-Mart and Kidd are now except better.

I'd say talent-wise, it's Pippen and Jordan who were the best. The six championships says it all. But it was definitely Stockton and Malone who had the best on court chemistry together.

It takes more than two good players to win a championship. Jordan and Pippen had more talent around them than Stockton and Malone did. The best duo, in my opinion is the one that works together the best and no two players in the history of the NBA have played together as well as Stockton and Malone did. I just watched Game 4 of the 97 NBA Finals a few hours ago and it was incredible to see just how well Stockton and Malone know each other, almost like they both have ESP. Their playing styles fit each other perfectly. For those who have only seen Stockton and Malone the past few seasons, I recommend watching old games of the Utah Jazz from the mid- and late- 90's.

I'm a big Stock/Malone fan but I'm gonna have to give it to Kareen and Magic because they had the rings to back it up.

You can't base it solely on rings because Kareem and Magic had a lot more talent around them than most, if not all, the other duos listed. Thus the road to a championship was not as difficult for those two than it was for other players.

Are you talking in their primes or at the time they played together?
To look at it from the other perspective, Pippen/Hakeem in Houston was probably one of the best combinations ever. Hakeem has shown his ability to lead his team to championships all by himself, unlike Jordan, and Pippen has shown to be one of the best complimentary players ever.
So, if Hakeem could even do it on his own, and Jordan needed some help by Pippen, would Hakeem/Pippen make for a better duo than Jordan/Pippen (both duos if in their primes)? Add in Barkley and it's almost sad to see how that Houston team didn't win a championship because of their personal problems. Had they put that aside, a team with three Hall of Famers sure would've won it.

Hakeem wasn't exactly alone in his championship runs. He didn't have as much help in the first championship year (1994), but in 1995 he was complimented by Clyde Drexler, a perennial All-Star. Otis Thorpe was the only other (former) All-Star on the 1994 championship team, but Hakeem still didn't take them to the title all by himself.

The Jordan/Pippen duo existed for 10 seasons and yielded 6 titles, 1 70+ win season, 5 60+ win seasons, and 8 50+ win seasons. Beyond the statistics, their on court chemistry was a thing of beauty, especially during the second threepeat.

The Hakeem/Pippen duo lasted a season, a 31-19 record (A 51-31 record in a normal season), and lost 3-1 in the first round of the 1999 playoffs. They didn't lose due to personal problems - Hakeem, Pippen and Barkley were all starting to decline.

Hakeem needed help to win the title, as did Tim Duncan and pretty much every player who is credited as winning the title by themselves. I don't think a duo of Hakeem and Pippen in their primes would necessarily win as many titles as the duo of Jordan and Pippen. The duo of Hakeem and Pippen in 1999 certainly wasn't as good as the duo of Jordan and Pippen through the 90s.
