Kidd and the Spurs

Postby stockman43 on Fri Jun 20, 2003 7:23 pm

I'm not sure if acquiring Jason Kidd from the Nets would be the best thing for the Spurs. They could really use a top-tier big man like Jermaine O'Neal or even Olowokandi (Elton Brand would be nice but that ain't happening). Kidd is always helpful in distribution, but the Spurs' offense doesn't capitalize on Kidd's best qualities--running the fast break or hitting the transition jumper--and the Spurs being the halfcourt team they are, would be better off with Tony Parker and Speedy Claxton (resign him please!).

The Spurs' need someone to knock down open jumpers off of Duncan's double teams, and I don't have confidence that Kidd can do that consistently. Parker will be a year older next year, and seeing the improvements he made this year, hopefully he will be more consistent and adept at the point in '03-04. Plus, when Parker does have an off night (ex. game 5 and 6 of the finals), Speedy can come in and play as well or better. That's why I would like to see the Spurs' get Jermaine O'Neal, but the speculation is that he can get a 7-year deal with the Pacers, and he can't in S.A...but he should consider that Texas doesn't have a state income tax. Ya'll may disagree, but from following the Spurs over the past few seasons, it seems that a point guard is the least of their concerns.

It would be the sweetest thing if the Spurs could trade (or sign and trade Kidd or someone) for Shareef Abdur-Rahim (Atlanta could use a point guard), and Reef would be a power inside, that could also knock down outside jumpers (35% 3pts) ahhh only in my dreams though :) . What do ya'll think would be best for the Spurs to repeat?

If the Spurs were smart they would not sign a Dukie who might get hurt.

I think the Spurs have a better chance of signing Kidd. If Indiana keeps Isiah Thomas, then they're keeping Jermaine O'Neal. He'll have the coach he wants, the money he wants, and nothing is guaranteed in the East.

Whichever way the Spurs go, signing Kidd or O'Neal, they will have made a great move. They'll either have a new twin towers combo, or a new inside-outside combo.

(or sign and trade Kidd or someone)

It wouldn't be that easy. The Nets can pretty much re-sign and trade Kidd in one breath, but if Kidd or any player signs with a team, he cannot be traded for 60 days.
