Wadlow was the tallest person of all time but i don't know if he played pro b-ball. I read an article on the internet and it said Gheorghe Muresan was the tallest player in NBA history. He was 7-foot-7.

As Shep said, he didn't play professional basketball. He was the world's tallest man, but he never played in the BAA, NBA, or any other league (I believe he died before any of the immediate forerunners to the NBA were setup).

On a semi-related topic, I remember reading Manute Bol lost a couple of teeth the first time he attempted to dunk.

I don't know where on earth the poster got the idea that Wadlow was a pro basketball player. He needed a cane to walk and died in his early 20's.

Considering that he was 8'11" in his socks...it would've been cool to see a center listed as 9'1" 490 pounds though (which was about his weight).

On a semi-related topic, I remember reading Manute Bol lost a couple of teeth the first time he attempted to dunk.

Assuming Bol was 7'7" and his teeth were about 6'10" above the ground...he'd need about a 38" vertical to hit his teeth on the rim. Kobe, by comparison, has a 37" vertical.

I'm simply repeating what I read. If it's made up, then the guy who wrote the article made it up - possibly to make me look foolish by repeating it.

Biography of the Manute
Manute was born October 16, 1962 in Khartoum, Sudan. His dad was 5'10" and his mom was 5'7". His younger sister is 6'10". He first played basketball at age 18 and chipped his teeth on the rim when he first tried to dunk. He was spotted by a college recruiter and came to play @ Villanova University in Philadelphia. He was drafted by the Washington Bullets and was the first foreign player ever drafted. He was a master of relocating the shot and led the Washington Bullets, Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat to many great seasons. He now lives in Sudan where he has spent millions of his hard earned dollars trying to bring peace to his war-torn homeland.

he reportedly could also dunk flat-footed.

That's it, chipped his teeth. I knew his teeth did come into contact with the rim, at the very least.

not 8'11''', 7'11''
Stands 242 cm (8-0 feet), weights 155 kgs and wears 60-size shoes. He has been discovered by a scout of Galatasaray named Cavit Altunay in Kiziltepe Köyü, a little village of the Mardin Province, Eastern Turkey, very near to Irak boundary. Galatasaray has immediately signed the young player, and the club is confident to convert him in a basketball player in two or three years, even if he is only a project at the pure beginning. At present, in fact, Kosen needs a surgical treatment at his knees and needs to improve his athletic skills. But Galatasaray doctors say that he ù
hasn' t yet ended his growth, and the definitive height could be around 250 cms (8 feet, 2 inches.....)

...and people thought Pavenian was funny... :P

If Manute did infact have enough leaping ability to chip his teeth on the ring he's more uncordinated than I thought :D

As for that Turkish kid I think it's too late to start playing hoops now, on top of that he's a stick. Bloody long though. I guess with a guy like that you would want to look into his health in terms of that disease really big people have, not sure what's it's called. Muressan (sp?) had it, and it caused a lot of problems with fatigue.
