underrated players of the season...

Usually after every season I like to look back and see which players were worth a mention that did not get the props they deserved. Who were those players this season? Post your candidates for most underrated and while were at it, most overrated aswell.

i think the most underrated player in the nba is: ray allen!

because when you think about it, he doesn't get the props like the other mega stars (kobe, a.i., t-mac, franshise etc.) this guy is very talented & can hold his own.

and though alot of people may disagree with me, i feel ray allen is a better shooter than peja stojackvic! anyhow you look at it, by stats or numbers, he's better. i think he's not rated enough...

IMO...I think Chris Webber is very overrated...He's very cocky...IMO

Most underrated player I would have to say is Shareef Abdur-Rahim...He can play...Maybe its motivation is what the guy needs...No flames...its MY opinion...one more thing...I still think Kevin Garnett shouldve gotten the MVP award...he is everything for the T'Wolves...Duncan has a little support atleast so in a way...I think he was overrated too...*This is my opinion of Duncan in the Regular Season...in the Playoffs this Kidd (Pun intended) is goin NUTS  *

i agree, spreeeewell is over rated

under rated: shaquille o'neal (should've been league mvp in 95, 97-01, yao ming (should've been rookie of the year), michael redd (should've been 6th man of year), elton brand

Walker is a very lazy superstar but he gets his points (maybe he is). Rose is a terrific player. Christie is not considered that big to be overrated (very defensive). Eddie has been playing for a coach who cares more about defense than offense so he doesn't get to score so many points as he used to, still a terrific player. Wally, spent most of the season injured and he hits his shots. Spree is just playing a different position he's not supposed to and is forced to face bigger guys as well, true he gets a lot of money but he does his best and still is a top player.

underrated: marion, malik rose, najera, aaron williams, snow, laetner, derrick coleman

Marion got his all-star, considered one of the top ones for his team (not underrated). Snow, gets his recognitions. Laettner is... Laettner.

I just would pick one of each:
Overrated: Kwame
Underrated: Prince

You think that Shaq's so underrated that he should've won MVP over Malone and Jordan in '97 and '98?? Wow. Shaq is nothing in my opinion. He has his duck-suckers and he has his people that don't like him. He's the most dominant, but the reason, which is very valid, that he doesn't get the MVP's is that the reason that he's so dominant, isn't because of his skill.

I don't think that Walker's overrated. I think he's just very streaky. He has his on and off nights.

Jalen Rose and Eddie Jones I don't think are overrated since they don't get a lot of respect. They're left off of all-star teams and aren't given praise often.

I think Steve Nash is overrated. His stats aren't even that good in my mind. I think Gary Payton's better than him, even though Nash made All NBA Third Team, which GP was left off of.

why isn't every 7 footer as dominant as shaq if it isn't for his skill and don't give me some shit that he only that dominant because he weighs 400lbs. why don't other C's in the league put on 100lbs to be like him then if the only reason why he's so dominant is because he weighs so much? why didn't pope lauderdale be as dominant as shaq?

No it wasn't obvious. Many people thought that it should have been Jordan instead of Malone, and that it was a good decision that Jordan won it in his last year.

By saying that "Shaq is nothing", I meant that he's neither underrated nor ovverated.

I look at Shaq's game and see a player who backs into his opponent and turns his elbow and to clear some room and shoots it. Most of the other seven footers are all about finesse. Yao Ming doesn't have the body that Shaq does because he probably lifts weights AND runs on the treadmill.

i was saying that i thought it was was obvious that i though shaq should've been mvp in 95, and from 97-01, being that 97 and 98 were included in 97-01, it is obvious that i thought that he should've been mvp over malone and jordan in 97 and 98. understand?

don't you think that if it was just a question of 'shaq's so dominant because he's heavy' people such as yao ming would just go out and eat and do weights every day of the year to be as good as shaq?

correction: rick carlisle underrated oops..

Rose is a terrific player. Christie is not considered that big to be overrated (very defensive). even if he plays on a teams that focuses on defense, i stil think EJ should have had a better season anyway considering he is one of the teams top scoring options. i think he's a terrific player but he's been a disappointment in my mind since he joined the heat.

a lot can be attributed to Bryant's defense, but Wally virtually disappeared in the playoffs. i'm almost sure he wasn't injured around that time.

rose is terrific also but i still think he's overrated. the bulls sure gave up a lot to get a player of his caliber. yeh the trade was partly made so Curry/Chandler could get some PT, but still, this guy's not even an all star, yet he gets paid like one. IMO he's nick van exel with height (pre dallas mavs).

i don't question spree's effort, i just think his game slipped this year and is not as good as others think he is

Shawn Marion is a perennial candidate for the underrated players list. Same with Ray Allen.

In the overrated column, I'm just going to make one pick - Wally Szczerbiak. It's kind of unfair, since he battled injuries this season, but he seems to be too quiet when the Wolves need him to make noise. Take the series against the Lakers for example. He needed to take more than 8 shots per game. Sure, the Lakers defense probably had as much to do with it as anything else, but he's a scorer, and scorers need to take shots - especially when offense is desperately needed.

How can Vin Baker be overated? Everyone thinks he sucks now. Also how can you say that Carter is overated? Everyone is bashing him like mad now that he's been injured for a bit, saying he wont take it to the rim, he's soft, he's made of glass etc.

You can't really judge Vince, unless you want to say he's an overrated dresser when it comes to street clothes or something like that.

I'd say Michael Finley was still underrated (even with the extra exposure because it's soaked up by Dirk, Gash and Van "Hyundai" Exel), but had some injury problems so it's hard to say.

Agreed also on Ray Allen, and also agreed that he's probably a better shooter than Pejda... fundamentally he seems more reliable, whereas as Pedja has a somewhat unorthodox & streaky shot. Ray's cool.

Ben Wallace - overrated because people mentioned him in MVP rumours last year (dunno about this yr). Tim Duncan can grab 20 boards too, and he gives you 40 points!

Donyell Marshal - underrated, with all the talk about the guard situation, and Chandler and Curry getting better, and Rose wanting to be the man and Eddy Robinson being an overpaid bitch, everybody forgot Donny!

Here's my list, with hort explanations:
Overrated:
Jordan - he wasn't the legend he used to be. That's not a knock on him, that's understandable. What's not understandable is fans who still acted like he was that legend.
Kobe - He was good, but do a small search on this board alone to see how overrated he was.
T-Mac - Cocky, but didn't have the game to back it up in the playoffs.
Everybody on the Hawks - Were thought to become a playoff team, even guaranteed the playoffs, but they found themselves in the lottery once again, and looking to hold a garage sale of players this offseason.
Mike Miller - Come on.. Gooden AND Giriceck??

Underrated:
Vince Carter - Played very well when he returned from injury. The season for the Raptors was over, so they kept him out at the end.
Eduardo Najera - How can a guy who only knows how to play defense be one of the most important players on a team that can only play offense?
The Nuggets - They weren't very talented, but they made people play their butts off to get a win against them.

Also, I agree on Shaq, being the most dominant player leads to being being the most valuable player.

i agree with all of those mentioned above except:

Dan Gadzuric wrote:T-Mac - Cocky, but didn't have the game to back it up in the playoffs.

his stats per game for the DET series:

31pts
6.7rrebs
4.7 assts
2 stls
45fg%
77fg%

that's jordan-like stats (circa 1987-1991)

if anything, he didn't have the supporting cast to advance.

I agree with Dan. If you compare his stats in the Detroit series with those of his regular season (32.1 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 5.5 APG, .457 fg%, .386 3PT%, .793 FT %) you can see that he clearly didn't step up during the playoffs. All of those numbers are down in the playoffs except for his rebounds.

" Jordan - he wasn't the legend he used to be. That's not a knock on him, that's understandable. What's not understandable is fans who still acted like he was that legend. "

Thats because MJ is a living legend. People wanted to give MJ his props formally. We never got to say goodbye in 98 because people were not sure whether or not he would retire. If anything MJ was underrated by many people. Take a look at his numbers for god sakes. The man was out of the game for lets see...3 years or so? It's not like he was a young guy either that could magically get in shape. :?
