Maybe the Pistons should hire "the Ben" (y) . I heard he is a (self proclaimed) nba genius! How could they go wrong?

That might work Matthew, but then the Pissed-ons would have "down time" periods once a month. This would be detrimental to their record.

Guys, I'm aware of the references. Please try and keep that stuff off the boards, I realise there are differences and arguments here, but if you're going to rib, please make sure it's ribbing, not insulting. Thank you.

On the topic at hand - why? Didn't Joe D say Carlisle's job wasn't in danger, and that there would be patience? Wasn't it Joe D himself who built this team of blue collar players and no All-Star calibre scorer? Didn't Detroit make the Conference Finals, only to lose to a team that lost its way late in the regular season, but showed they were the best team in the East come playoff time?

The answers: Yes, though he didn't say he would definitely keep his job either; Yes, Joe D has been credited for all the moves; and Yes, though it's unlikely everyone would call the Nets the best team in the East.

If the Pistons fail to sign Brown, or any other high profile coach (ie one who has had success elsewhere) this offseason, then they'll have shot themselves in the foot. Carlisle got the most out of a team that had no "conventional" star player (Ben Wallace was an All-Star, but most good teams' top scorer is their All-Star calibre player), and was a couple of pieces short of being able to deal with the Nets.

Detroit has taken a gamble that might pay off, but it seems the blame has again fallen on the coach when the roster, which as I mentioned an unusual is built on an unconventional formula, is likely the cause of the team's postseason shortcomings - which still resulted in a later exit than last year.

I think the Pistons might have been a little impatient here - time will tell whether it was a good or bad decision.

What the hell? That sucks. This might be a good move in term of getting a more experienced coach, but this sucks for fans for sure. He did an unbelievable job, even without considering that he was coach of the year his first year as head coach and a total regular season record of 100-64, a 61% winning percentage over his first to year. Larry Brown is expected to join the Pistons on monday. I really wanna tune in to the press conference to hear what he has to say about this team's direction. His last project, The Sixers, did show that he was capable of putting together a team of roleplayers around a superstar, but how will he work with a team of only roleplayers? He IS the type of coach that can help with the rebounding problem that the pistons have, but he also needs the right players... it seemed that the Pistons had a clear view of what they were going to do this offseason, but now fans are left, again, wondering.

ESPN reporting that Larry Brown is the new Pistons head coach.

Carlisle's job wasn't in danger probably until he made some tatical lineup errors all throughout the playoffs. I think Joe D questioned if Rick was too rigid in lineups. Perhaps even questioned if Darko would get the Tayshaun treatment.

EDIT: I see Denys has posted it...ok then...I'm going to still trust Joe D...everyone was "left wondering" after signing Corliss, trading for Barry and Cliffy, Okur, Zelly, Tayshuan and Stack-for-Rip...

Seems like the Pisstons got a hold on Brown, his hiring will be official on monday. Meanwhile, Carlisle should not be unemployed for a long time, as there are pretty good jobs open for grabs right now...

I think Carlisle job was never in danger until Larry Brown decided to leave the Sixers. True, they got swept by the Nets but it's not like saying the Nets team is bad or was a terrible upset. The Pistons might be using that excuse to get a manager with more experience like they already have in their hands the contract for Larry Brown.

As for the Sixers, I don't think they will get a known manager who would like to deal with Iverson & his opinions about practice. Portland said they would let Cheeks accept the Job and Maurice didn't want the job "and I know he would love it bcause that was his real team but he doesn't want to deal with Iverson. Maybe Rodman would take that job so Iverson can have his way. They need to find some manager who doesn't care about practice and I think they won't, but if they want to fix Iverson instead, they should get Chuck Daly to the town, that would help.

lol, you don't live in Toronto and you knew it is cold up there

It's not that he wants to leave Portland but he wanted to get a chance for an interview, so I was wrong, stupid SC-ESPN said he was the one rejecting the offer. Now they are letting him get a shot overthere, link. Well, looks like the Blazers want Carlisle, but still I don't think Maurice is looking forward to dealing with Iverson.

Silas will be the next Cavs coach as well,

Scrap the stuff about the Pistons shooting themselves in the foot - obviously, they're going to get a more than adequate replacement. Still, it's kind of a classless thing to do.

I know, I know, the NBA is a business, and we're not supposed to blink when a moderately successful coach is tossed aside because a more experienced and successful coach suddenly becomes available. But it's an awfully cold way of doing business - "Thanks for a good two years, but this guy's got a nice resume, and he just left his old job."

Obviously, Detroit has to do what it has to do. And sometimes, you have to go back on what you say when looking out for the team's best interests. But unless Carlisle knew this was coming, the Pistons have, to a certain extent, mistreated him as they parted ways.

I know it's not the right way to talk about the sport we love, but we understand what's going on as well. The same way there's this quote:

Fox Sports wrote:The Trail Blazers on Wednesday turned down Philadelphia's initial request to speak to Cheeks as a possible replacement for Larry Brown, who resigned Monday. The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Portland changed its mind after Detroit fired coach Rick Carlisle on Saturday.

That clearly tells me they want Carlisle back in town.

Fox Sports wrote:Carlisle was an assistant for P.J. Carlesimo in Portland between 1994-97. The Trail Blazers went to the playoffs in each of those three seasons.

While agree Larry Brown is a great coach, I do not believe he is better or more qualified than Carlisle.

In 2000 when the Pacers reached the NBA Finals and lost to the Lakers, it was clear who ran the team. Larry Bird (my favorite basketball person ever) did not run this team, he was a motivator and terrific leader to be certain, but when a timeout was called, the plays were drawn up by Rick Carlisle, the teams plays on both ends were designed by and carried out in strategy by Carlisle. To me this amounts to taking the Pacers to the Finals. Then we all know that he lead Detroit to two division titles and to the Eastern Conference Finals this year. If you look over Larry Brown's long history as a coach, you will not find any more accomplishment.

Larry Brown was named Olympic coach for the qualifying team this summer, Nick Collision, Mike Bibby and Richard Jefferson were also named, doesn't mean they are the best available. To me Phil Jackson and his 9 NBA titles and his reputation for dealing with a handful of different personalities are overwhelming credentials. Some will argue that his system is too difficult or something shallow, Larry Brown doesn't (I hope) just roll the ball out there without a difficult system. Phil Jackson maybe just was not interested. Nine championships make him one of at least two of the greatest coaches EVER. Larry Brown has one a college title and that is it.

Rick Carlisle was shafted or something strange was at play here, remember Brown's comments about the Wizards job, then look at the firing of Carlisle.

My opinion puts Carlisle ahead of Brown, he virtually lead the Pacers to the Finals, led Detroit to the East Finals, all in four years, Brown has been a coach since what 1970?

It had been rumoured through the season that Carlisle might get fired this summer, so it isn't like it fell out of the sky.

Dumars is a very bold GM, and until now his moves have paid off. Maybe he thinks Carlisle won't be as successful without O'Neill (future Toronto coach). Dumars isn't afraid to pull the trigger on deals, as he's shown with Stackhouse. I wonder what deals he has in mind for this summer. I haven't followed the Pistons as much as some people around, but I'd say they'd still like to have a scoring SF, either to start or behind Prince? Perhaps another PG, and a C won't hurt either (then again, every team wants a PG and a C).

Paul, I get your point but there's something you already pointed out and that is experience. You have been saying that Carlisle was the one taking the Pacers to the Finals, I truly believe you cause I never considered Bird a guy to coach any team by himself. While you are an assistant you just get a shot to become a coach but nobody cares if you were an assistant of any championship teams bcause you were not the real coach of the team, that's why L. Brown is so valuable. He has coached bad teams and has been sucessful with them.

The stupid NBA.com has Pat Riley as coach of the year in 89-90 for the Knicks, lol. You see Pat, if he becomes available, everyone (I wouldn't) is going to look for him just for his merits, you would see Dallas, N. Jersey, Boston getting rid of their coaches to get a shot on Pat and it really doesn't mean Pat is over those other coaches who have had better seasons than him, it is because the knowledge he has in the game.

In his book, Larry Bird gives credit, to Rick Carlile and the other guy (assistant) whoever it was, and acknowledges that they were there to draw up the plays, and he was a motivator, tough guy ra ra ra... and that they (the Pacers) wouldn't have gotten to where they did without those guys.
