Fouling Out

Postby Veheme on Thu Mar 27, 2008 12:16 pm

This question had been lingering on my mind for some time now... My question is what happens if, example, the Phoenix Suns, have 8 active players in the game(they had an injury-plagued season) and then 4 of their players were fouled out leaving them 1 player short of the 5-man players on the court, what happens then?

The last player to foul out remains eligible.

If a team has no available substitutes, a player who picks up his sixth foul can remain in the game and may continue to accumulate fouls. However, a team foul will also be assessed along with a technical foul. It doesn't happen often but it has happened before, as such the record for most personal fouls in a single game is eight.

There's also a provision for players who have fouled out to return if there is an injury and no one else is available, with similar penalties.

Does the team get to pick the guy who comes back on?

The last player who fouled out is allowed to return. If further players are injured or ejected, replacements continue in that order with the most recent player to foul out becoming eligible to return.

It happened to me in NBA Live 95 once as well, all available subs were fouled out or injured. It followed the correct rules, even assessing a technical foul. I've tried it in a couple of games since and it was the same.

I've tried fouling over and over back when I was young to get me the win in the fourth quarter. Eventually the fifth-to-last player that gets to six fouls is allowed to stay on, and they keep playing.
