Mike Conley the next T.J Ford?

Fri Jan 04, 2008 7:42 am

Looking at his stats, he has similar stats to what Ford had in his rookie year. Conley is getting about 10 less minutes, which doesn't allow him to match or exceed Fords rookie averages. I'm sure if he got more minutes he would exceed those averages though. They also compare because of their size and weight. But my real question is, do you see Conley becoming a Ford double, or better than Ford, could he possibly not even become as good?

Code:
Ford200304: 10.6pts 4.8rebs 9.7asts 1.6stls; 39% eFG, 44% TS;
Conley0708: 12.9pts 4.4rebs 9.1asts 1.6stls; 48% eFG, 54% TS;

Ford200304: 38.0 AsR, 14.8 ToR, 18.7 UsG, 6.8 RbR; 12.1 PER
Conley0708: 39.8 AsR, 8.2  ToR, 16.6 UsG, 6.2 RbR; 17.5 PER

Looks like he's already as good as Ford last season.

I think Conley will be better simply because Ford's injury problems will prevent him from ever matching his potential. Sure, there is a chance Conley will have injury problems, but its extremely unlikely they would be as bad as Ford's.

Also, TJ Ford doesnt play as much minutes like other starting point guards. He splits minutes with Jose Calderon. Mike Conley could have an edge later..

I mentioned this to one of my friends once before. I believe he will be better than Ford (mainly because I don't expect him to have the type of injury Ford had). He is very poised when on the court and for this to only be like his 7 or 8th game playing, he never looks nervous on the court. He also doesn't turn the ball over much judging by his game-by-game stats so far. Having him on the court really makes a difference for the Grizz and it showed when they played the Pacers. The ball gets moved around alot quicker in a rotation and it allows Gay, Pau and Miller to score more easier.

Gay also produces alot better with Conley on the court because he did have 5 assists during that game, and I think his APG had something to deal with the Grizzlies not having a true PG on the court. Given that Conley will play more and become the starter for the rest of the year (and hopefully a long career), he will definitely make Memphis play better and hopefully win some games as well. If Memphis does end up with a top 5 pick this year, I'm hoping they can grab Eric Gordon and they would really have something going for the future. I don't see Pau going anywhere, but Miller, Stoudamire and Warrick may be on their way out sometime soon.

He's going to be a better defender than TJ, and has a higher ceiling IMO. I have been a big fan of TJ's in the past, but haven;t kept track of him really since he left the Bucks. I really hope the Bucks land Conley in a trade, he was the guy I was hoping would fall in the draft to us.

So why didnt you trade up for him?

What do you mean by higher ceiling? Are you talking purely in an athletic sense?

A Conley/Gordon/Gay trio would be dynamic.

Like a Hinrich/Gordon/Deng trio without a post presence?

Conley is black, Hinrich is not. And Gay has Axel as a fan. So it's obvious they are completely different.

The chipped tooth from the Boston game was a bit unsightly though.

Hey, don't leave me out! :lol: And Conley is continually improving the team whenever he is on the court. They are 2-1 so far with him as the starter. About time Memphis has a true point guard this season! I really want them to lose more now so they can get a high pick and draft Gordon. :twisted: I'm also still looking for them to make a deal to get Pietrus for Stoudamire.

I'd compare Conley more to Tony Parker. He didnt have much of a jumpshot coming into the league either.
