Bobcats Sign Varejao to Offer Sheet

Wed Dec 05, 2007 4:26 am

Well, they do :-)

It would be interesting to know how much they offered him - does anyone know how much money they have to offer?

Hopefully the Cavs don't match....they will, but hopefully they don't....the thing is the Cavs didn't offer him a deal like this, because he probably would've accepted it....MLE money on a short term deal....he gets some family security, but if he improves a lot (unlikely) then he can expand on that....Cavs said long term deal or one year qualifying offer....good for Anderson though (Y)

ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reported the offer sheet is worth $17.4 million, which would fit the Bobcats' mid-level salary cap exception.

According to ESPN.com's Chad Ford, the offer sheet includes an opt-out clause after year two, meaning Varejao could become a free agent again in the summer of 2009.

Varejao's agent, Dan Fegan, could not immediately be reached.

The 6-foot-10 Varejao has been in a prolonged contract dispute with the Cavaliers, who had offered him a deal worth approximately $20 million over three years.

Wait what just happened? He took an offer for lower money because he felt the cavs werent giving him a decent offer? He wanted to be treated fairly. Now the cavs can match the offer and get him for less money then the bad offer they did give him?

how odd... I don't get Varejao.

I like the idea of him as a Bobcat though. A starting 5 of Felton, J-Rich, Gerald Wallace, Varejao and Okafor looks pretty good.

If Cleveland matches this, Varejao's gonna be pissed. He doesn't wanna play for the Cavs anymore. As everyone has said in this thread, it doesn't make sense. He wants to get paid more, the Cavs offered him 20 million over three years, he doesn't take that, but he's willing to sign an offer sheet for less that Cleveland can match at anytime? Weird. Perhaps he finally realizes that no one was going to sign him at his original asking price anyways. If I remember correctly, he was asking for 8 million a year originally. 8 million for a hustle guy that gives 6 points and 6 rebounds a game? For one million more or something around that, you can get Josh Howard (if I remember correctly, he's getting somewhere between 9 and 10 million a year). TJ Ford is signed for around 8 million something a year. Varejao is nowhere close to the level of these two and he wants 8 million?

I really don;t see any reason why varejao should be paid anything more than 2 mil/yr. The cavs can pretty much pick up another 7 foot rebounder from the NBDL for far far less money and put up the same numbers. Oh, wait a minute, the Cavs have Dwayne Jones playing very well lately for the Cavs. The only drawback for the Cavs if Verejao does not return, is that they'll have a bunch of those souvenir red fros to dispose of.

Well, after all that crap, Anderson Varejao is still a Cavalier. Cleveland matched the Bobcat's offer sheet.

Yeah, I agree with the examples listed, those are bad contracts. At this rate, you're gonna have to pay something like 12million for a 10 and 10 big man  .

It really makes me wish the Nets would use Magloire more. At 4 million a year, he is a MAJOR steal.

Supposedly Varejao's happy to be back in Cleveland. Perhaps it's all water under the bridge now, though I suppose he has to put on a good face and go out and play well even if he'd rather be somewhere else; if he behaves like a malcontent or underperforms it won't do him any favours when he finally becomes an unrestricted free agent.

well Mo Williams said he didn't want to go back to Milwaukee, but we haven't heard a peep out of him....these guys are professionals & will play for who to pays....no doubt Andy will have some resentment towards Ferry & maybe Cavs' front office, but not the city, his teammates & coaching staff....

Supposedly he's going to play against us on Tuesday. I hope Jeff pops him in the mouth hard a couple times like he always does to welcome him back.

Wasn't that Charlie Bell? I thought Mo Williams was happy to return after a brief flirtation with the Miami Heat?

I see your point though. As we both know however, not all professional basketball players keep their gripes to themselves for the good of the team.

I think it might have happened to both Mo & Bell, although I couldn't be 100% sure....it's just Mo's situation got sorted out a lot quicker, but I think he still didn't like that Bucks didn't really make an offer....can't blame a team for letting market determine a player's value....with all the capped out teams, they know it's a way of getting the player cheaper....there is some risk attached to it though....
