Kobe vetoed completed deal to Detroit

Fri Nov 16, 2007 8:55 am

Report: Lakers Agreed To Bryant Deal
According to radio station 1270 AM in Detroit, the Lakers and Pistons came to an agreement to trade Bryant to the Pistons.

However, Bryant used his no-trade clause to veto the trade.

The report claims the deal was completed late Tuesday night.

Detroit would have sent Tayshaun Prince, Rip Hamilton, Amir Johnson and a first round pick to the Lakers.

wow. imagine if this one went down.

Whoa!!! Where did that come from? And why would Kobe veto being part of a still much improved starting 5. I didn't even know Detroit wanted Kobe...

A shame that this didn't go down. Would have been one of the biggest surprises ever.

Fri Nov 16, 2007 11:56 am

Either Kobe is a complete idiot, or he really wants to stay a Laker.

Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:01 pm

Why would Kobe not want to be in Detroit? He would have been able to play with Sheed and Billups. Sure...Tayshaun and Rip are gone but I don't think he will be able to play with a better supporting cast. He must really want to go to Chicago or something.

Cause then he'd actually have to live in Detroit. No one wants that.

Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:51 pm

He wouldn't have to live in Detroit. He wouldn't even have to go to Detroit. The Palace is in Auburn Hills. Kobe wouldn't last a day in the D anyway.

Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:52 pm

i was watching nba tv last night and Peter Vecsey said there was no truth in this.

edit: meaning, it never got to the point where kobe could veto it

Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:54 pm

It's Rick Bucher dicking around with the trade machine trying to get another Kobe story out there.

Meh. The important thing is I still got to make fun of Detroit.

Do you like going down to the park and pushing autistic two year olds off the slide?

Oh, snap. Double zing, there.

Fri Nov 16, 2007 5:13 pm

maybe kobe's bluff is getting more obvious

Fri Nov 16, 2007 7:04 pm

I dont know if he would want to go to a team with an aging Billups, Sheed, Mcdyess, and a head coach that isnt very good. With Hamilton and Prince gone, there is no future. The team would be good for 1 or 2 seasons. After that i dont think they have much left for kobe to play with. At least with the bulls, they have younger guys that can get even better. With what detroit would be left with, that wouldnt be a good situation in the long run.

Fri Nov 16, 2007 7:21 pm

maybe not in the long run, but at present it's much better than what the Bulls can offer. Kobe wants to win now, not later. Billups, Kobe, Sheed is a great 3 to have....you've got an excellent point guard, and a low post scorer/excellent defender around Kobe.

And, he gets more flexibility by becoming a FA soon.

too bad this didnt happen

Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:28 am

seems most reports are claiming this is completly false, which i would tend to agree with

Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:58 am

well Bucher is full of shit....but its fun to dream

Sat Nov 17, 2007 7:30 am

some guy on another forum said this about why kobe rejected the trade
i think it makes perfect sense...
Kobe's all about the winning stuff is all nonsense. He wants the spotlight, and wants to feed his ego, and that's the real reason he has such a "desire to win" because of all the spotlight his ego gets when they do win.

If he goes to the Bulls, he's the top dawg, it's Kobe the SUPERSTAR and a bunch of talented youngster sidekicks. Hell its already a team without a leader.

us? Hell, we have two leaders, or at least two alpha personalities, STAYING in that trade, Billups and Rasheed. It's Kobe coming onto a veteren squad who have been deep in the playoffs and won a title and aren't going to be awed by hiim as the savior, Detroit the city will definately cheer Kobe but are not going to feed his ego enough, he's basically sharing the local spotlight. As sick a backcourt as Billups/Kobe would make, you have to wonder, if you're gonna see some team leadership clashes there.

Sat Nov 17, 2007 7:34 am

never saw this coming. guess he feels detroit isnt the team for him.

btw kobe is the only player with a no-trade clause in the league right?

Buckley wrote:btw kobe is the only player with a no-trade clause in the league right?

yes

still i dont think kobe rejected the trade, i dont think it ever happened. it could have happened and joe D is just trying to say it never did to keep the peace but i dont believe it did.

as for what you posted lax, i would agree with that. kobe wants to be the man, he wants to be king shit, he would not get that in the city that beat his unbeatable hall of fame team

Sat Nov 17, 2007 9:00 am

lol this reminds me of last year when AI reportedly wanted to be traded to the Wolves. That caused quite a ruckus. Of course, he ended up in Denver instead so...

Sat Nov 17, 2007 11:14 am

This would have been all over the news if it were true.

Sat Nov 17, 2007 1:09 pm

I actually saw this on Josh McRoberts blog (don't ask  ) and was like "Wow. Hilarious fake trade."

My thoughts exactly, the lack of wide coverage makes me skeptical. I suppose the rumour thrives on the fact that Joe Dumars denied any serious talks with the Lakers recently which as we all know can be a sign that something is in the works, along with the continued whispers about Kobe's trade demands not being forgotten.
