now i cant say im suprised because there has been rumblings all season, but the kirilenko and odom scenarios are both intriguing but i dont think itl be a step forward for phoenix should they trade marion for either of these players.
Wed Sep 26, 2007 9:19 pm
marion would be a good fit in LA, his defence would do heaps for them
Wed Sep 26, 2007 9:23 pm
I can potentially see the Suns getting better in a deal if they get back Odom or Kirilenko. Kirilenko would get more touches than he's getting now and more freedom and he should improve interior defence....a glaring hole in the Suns D.
If they get Odom in return they get a guy that can create for himself and others. They probably lose on the defensive end but they'll make up for it by the fact that Odom's performance goes up in the playoffs, and not down like Marions.
Either, changes are in store

again i dont agree with a player letting his feelings known just before the start of training camp, but at least it can be resolved before the start of the season.
i just think marion was perfect in phoenix system almost the perfect player to have playing alongside nash. I think kirilenko will more than adaquetley fill his shoes but kirilenko's defence isnt the type of defence phoenix needs. they need a genuine post defender not a guy like kirlenko/marion who plays superb passing lane defence and are very good weakside blockers.
kirilenko offers phoenix cap relief over the short term but increases at the back end of his deal. now if only phoenix knew this before they got rid of thomas to seattle, they could of replaced marion with kirilenko and still kept thomas, the post defender they needed.....dont quote me on this tho im not too sure about thomas salary.

I understand Shawn, it sucks when you build a team, grow in a team professionally and build up relationships with your teammates then suddenly a Garnett rumor surfaced and it's you who gets the boot out, still in that matter, he has to share the stardom with two other superstars.
Kirilenko in Suns? I doubt he'll be able to contribute as much as Marion can, well, offensively, that is.
Odom in Suns? I'd be happy if I am Lamar, he will get more freedom with the Suns, not to mention a boost of his scoring and assist average.
Marion as a Laker? Hey, he could be a "Pippen" in disguise.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 1:02 am
I think that if Marion were to leave the Suns, he will not find the kind of individual success he had with the Suns. I just think that a lot of his performance is due to the Suns' style of play. I just don't think his game is very well suited to go somewhere and be the main guy or be a part of an offense where he is relied to score on his man one-on-one. Marion excels at getting transition buckets and hitting wide up spot up jumpers. He isn't going to get those buckets with the Jazz or the Lakers, at least not like he did with the Suns.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 1:25 am
^^ exactley that was point point too, marion is the perfect player for phoenix system, but i think hel still flourish in la playing alongside kobe.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 1:28 am
Marion was successful before Nash came along and the Suns became the type of team they are now, I'm sure he would be somewhere else too. That being said, I don't want him at the Lakers.

They're a championship contender. I really would not like to see Marion leave just now when Phoenix can win it all this year. With or without Kurt Thomas.

you sir are wrong, they have no chance, the celtics are set in stone to win it all
but seriously, it seems both deals would bring back another player that can contribute. its not just marion for odom or marion for ak. if the suns can trade a unhappy player and get a talented player back who can slip right into a starting spot and pick up a solid back up(best case a big man) then it could be for the best to trade him. before doing the deal for ak i am sure phoenix would want to be sure he actually wants to play in the nba still otherwise they are just tradeing 1 unhappy player for another. i believe odom would welcome the move myself.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 4:36 am
Thinking about it now, getting Kirilenko or Odom will minimize the losses that Marion brings, but the Suns are still better with Marion. I hope Marion changes his mind and sucks it up. Odom would bring more firepower on offense with his passing, but they already have Diaw for that. AK47... can't comment much since I haven't seen him play very much.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 5:02 am
I think odom would be a good fit, especially since Phoenix isnt known for playing its defense. He is as good of a scorer if not better then marion in terms of shooting, and all around offense. Not just those nice dunks nash finds marion. Plus Odom would be able to make plays himself if he gets the rock on the break and sees something. Yeah i think marion is better, but i think odom would do more for the suns offense then what marion has been doing. Plus i dont think odom would have a problem being the 2nd or 3rd man on the team.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 5:02 am
How would you guys rank Kirilenko, Odom and Marion?
Thu Sep 27, 2007 5:05 am
Odom
Kirilenko
Marion
I'm ignoring last season for Kirilenko, including last season I would have him dead last easily. The reason I've got Odom up higher is because he is a freakish talent for his position, it's just hard to judge him right now with the way things are for him at LA. I'm still living in his Clipper days to be honest.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 5:45 am
I'm suprised you hold Odom in such high regard. Odom's got a ridiculous set of skills and talent, but he still hasn't blossomed into the Magic Johnson type of player everyone envisioned. I'm a huge Odom fan too, but I wouldn't take him over Marion's defensive versatility. I think Kirilenko's better defensively, but he's not a difference maker on offence like Marion who will quietly get you 20 points within the flow of an offence.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 5:52 am
1) Marion.
2) Kirilienko. (Eurobasket
..)
3) Odom.
Marion is a machine. He can rebound, score and defend.. What else you need?
If a trade Odom + Cook = Marion is made, then Kerr is stupid..
Although better, than trading him to his favourite Spurs for a second round pick or smthg...

He probably never will, but in the right team he'd be immense. Marion and Kirilenko have both shown us probably the absolute most they can do for a team (Kirilenko has apparentely lost his mind now so I doubt he'll go back to that), whereas Odom hasn't had the chance. He was getting there with the Clippers but that ended before he could really show exactly what he's capable of.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 6:51 am
hmmmm. maybe a trade with the bulls? marion for nocioni? just a thought. would work for both teams.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 7:23 am
well marion is a free agent next season aint he? it seems he wants a extension but the suns will not pay him what he wants(and they shouldnt) so tradeing him now and getting a player like odom back would be for the best imo.
to answer your question indy right now i put
odom
marion
ak
1 and 2 i could really flip flop but if i am running a team i want odom instead(probably a bit of bias involved in there)
Thu Sep 27, 2007 7:43 am
i think kirilenko would be able to more than compensate if not improve phoenix with the loss of marion, like a previous poster said diaw is a very similar player to odom but is better defensivley. if i were to make a trade id take kirilenko over odom for the suns and im saying this with odom being my favourite player.
he is so talented but his skills are already there at phoenix i.e. his passing with the likes of nash and hill.

You make a good point. I think what holds him back is the fact that he isn't very comfortable playing as a power foward. I think Odom plays better (and causes more mismatches by using his versatility) at the small foward position. I remember during that one resurgent star calibre year that he had with Miami and he played small foward for them when Caron Butler was injured.

Wow. I'm shocked so many people agree with me in saying that Lamar is the best player of the 3, I thought that would be controversial.
I agree with you 100% Jae. Except I rank them the same way Sauru does. I would take Marion over AK any day of the week.
I actually think that Lamar would be an unbelievable fit in Utah. He'd be the best possible compliment to Carlos Boozer. That would be an excellent frontcourt with Lamar/Boozer and Memo.
Thu Sep 27, 2007 8:40 am
1) Marion.
2) Kirilienko. (Eurobasket ..)
3) Odom.
Same here.
Odom can be amazing at times, but there's no way he's a more valuable player than Marion. This dude's from another planet.

Jae wrote:Marion and Kirilenko have both shown us probably the absolute most they can do for a team
Yeah, be one of the three best players at their position on a regular basis. Damn them and their super efficient offense and defense, helping their teams win games like that.
We can't say what Odom can deliver, I mean eight seasons worth is clearly not enough time to evaluate a player. Plus, he's only 27, lots of time to develop. Not like that 28 year old (and eight seasons) Marion and 25 year old (and six) Kirilenko.
That would be an excellent frontcourt with Lamar/Boozer and Memo.
Because two-thirds of the frontcourt is still Boozer and Okur.

Marion, hands down, is better than Kirilenko and Odom combined (okay, that's going a little far, but that's how highly I think of Marion). He is one of the best overall players in the league - one who excels at an extremely high level on both offense and defense. Obviously the Suns style helps pad his stats a bit, but he would still put up great numbers on any team in the league. He is always near the top of the league in steals, blocks, and rebounds - and he's only 6'7. Beast.
