July 18, 2007 -- Stephon Marbury made a shocking revelation yesterday, saying that when his contract expires with the Knicks in two years, he's planning to play in Italy.
Marbury, amidst his 38-city, cross-country bus tour to promote his discount Starburys sneakers, told The Post he wants to eventually leave the NBA after having visited Italy in May with his wife.
"I'm not just thinking of doing it, I'm going to do it," Marbury vowed yesterday. "My wife loved it there. It's like a [David] Beckham thing."
The Marburys visited Rome, Milan and Tuscany.
Marbury has one year left on his contract with Steve & Barry's and has told friends he wants to take his sneakers global. Marbury will be 32 when his contract expires.
"I would've played 13 years in the league," said Marbury, who is writing a Web blog for The Post. "That's a lot. Most guys don't get to seven."
Asked if the Knicks were on the verge of a title in two years, Marbury said, "We're on the verge right now in my mind."
Marbury, who said he wouldn't want to play anywhere else, says he's not sure if the Knicks would re-sign him at age 32 because of knee tendinitis. Last summer Marbury said he wanted to die a Knick.
There's always been speculation Isiah Thomas would trade Marbury during the final year of his contract when it's a trade asset for a team looking to clear cap room.
There also are reports the Knicks were trying to get under the cap when Marbury's contract expired, but that notion blew up with the Zach Randolph trade on draft day when they took on his four-year deal.
Marbury will make $20.1 million this season and $21.9M in his final year.

wow steph leaving the nba in a couple seasons, this is shocking indeed, and i thin raises the question if he wants to really win and make something of himself before he retires

It's not surprising, imo. It's Marbury. He hasn't been spectacular everywhere he went in his entire career, has been a bit unpredictable at times, and well, I can't see him being any more valuable at 32.

This is very good news. Him being in the league is bad.

Looks like the Knicks are finally getting on track and away from that "full of injured stars" look. Funny how when you start sucking you want to leave somewhere where its easier. Beckham left Europe because its too hard for him now, and Marbury is leaving NBA because he is starting to suck here. Pele told Beckham - its not going to be easy in America either, same goes to Stephon in Italy.

i like how he compares his situation to beckhams. beckham is a god in his sport, most people i know either hate or dont give a shit about marbury

Perhaps he'll employ the same technique Rolando Blackman once described upon going to play in Greece.
Patricia Bender's site wrote:Rolando Blackman on the Greek he needs to learn for his stay with Aek team of the Greek Basketball League: "The first phrase I want to learn is 'Give me the ball.' The second is 'Get out of the way.' The rest will take care of itself."

Wow, fuck all you starbury haters.

Good luck to him, maybe he can find out where Gregor Fucka went.

it's just a gossip... he can say anything he wants
and i don't think he really wanna go there when the time comes
if anyone has to go to italy and play some ball, it's bargnani

So does Marco Belinelli. A bunch of other NBA players, including Yao Ming, has to go play for their national teams.

LOL, priceless.
Steph has been a good player his entire career, no matter how you hate him. 20 and 8 over 10 years is HARDLY the statline of an overly selfish player, & would get him into HOF consideration if he had any playoff success. He is givin a bad rap despite the fact that NONE of the teams he has played for were really that talented. Minnesota was too young, NJ was ehh, KVH still carries the soft tag he earned from playing there, and phoenix was "rebuilding" every year he was there, same with NY. Cut the man some slack please.

when the man does something worthwhile i will cut him slack, as of now he is nothing but a cancer

I would like to see Marbury on a team that truly had a chance of accomplishing something, other than a first round upset. Im not condoning his negative aspects, he is a bit of a malcontent, but thats no different than Chris Webber. only difference was, Webber kept his mouth shut because his teams were actually good. Doesnt change that he is a crybaby, but he is looked upon slightly differently because he was the part of something greater. Without Horry and Fisher the lakers lose 2 of those Sacramento series and Webber has Rings. No such case for Marbury, so he gets to be the lone gunner that we all hate, lol.

That reminded me of a time when Jason Kidd was traded to New Jersey. The Nets were projected not to make the playoffs at the time, and the next thing you know, Jason led the team to two straight NBA Finals appearances. If Marbury had the same killer instinct and unselfishness as Kidd, he would've led Phoenix further.
Sat Jul 21, 2007 6:28 am
ehh, but kidd came to the east during an uncertain time, there was no dominant team in the east. It was MUCH easier to do more with less. Marbury on the other hand made it to phoenix just in time for Penny's second round of injuries, and the beginning of the Duncan era, when david robinson was still playing. Shaq and Kobe were there, Sacramento has just gotten good. There was NO way the suns were going anywhere, even with kidd running the show.

Hm, good point. I'm still not convinced that Marbury has the tools to lead a team deep, though.
Sat Jul 21, 2007 6:43 am
lol tru. But i guess we'll never find out now, what with him going to Italy and all..
How do you say get out of my way in Italian?
Sat Jul 21, 2007 8:59 am
marbury has had plenty of chances to prove himself a winner and has failed to do so every time. every time he leaves a team they get better next season. once he leaves ny i fully expect them to make the eastern conference finals just to really drive home the point
Sat Jul 21, 2007 10:46 am
What an idiot... Leaving the best city in the world to come to Italy.

Babelfish translated "Give me the ball and get out of my way" as "Diami la sfera ed esca del mio senso", though I couldn't say how accurate that is myself.

with who running the point? Nate?
mardy collins is another pepe sanchez, and they have no other guards to speak of. unless they draft well after this year, there is any light at the end of the tunnel when he leaves either.

I'm with you on that one, he can lead Brescia or Milan deep.
