Will stereotypes ever change?

I just thought of something: I'm totally biased. When I first watched the NBA at the age of 13-14, (season 1993-94) I built myself an opinion about most of the teams which I still support today, although the team, its players and its style may have completely changed over that long period of time.

For example:

Rockets: exciting, fun to watch, great style
Magic: Nick Anderson, need I say more?
Spurs: damn boring if you're not a fan, although they have great players
Pistons: Defensive aces, all of them

Then again, some teams haven't really changed over the last 15 years, have they? It's strange how some teams like the Pistons have always been known for their defense and there's always been a shining star on the Lakers. Or like the Mavs are never gonna win anything.

What do you guys think? Are you as biased as I am?

i think u're right! and the case is in (my thought) staff mentality, owner mentality. if one old coach builded up an D-team with pistons, so the younger coach, who gonna be a next one, he respect a tradition and continues to mess around with players like that.

and here's another example: my team Miami Heat - when Riley takes the team in his hands, it become a champion 4 the first time!

may be it's a bad aura over the teams like dallas, bucks, philly, nok...

to a degree, yes - in pretty much all sports, theres teams like the red wings or lakers, or even the red sox, not to mention all the (real) football teams and even college teams and foreign league teams like modo. obviously a lot of it has to do with being in a major city.

then again, its amazing what a streak of sucking can do. (see leafs, celtics, etc.) and amazing what a short amount of winning can do (cavs )

that may be reasoned in circumstances like the city, the fans ...
LA (=hollywood) needs a shining star, detroit (=motown) needs hard workers, new york needs a big ensemble, sleeeepy san antonio needs halfcourt basketball etc.
they try to build a team which represents the city and its fans. i can remember phoenix playing the fast break all years long whether if they did not win a championship. but thats what they want.

If I remember correctly, this is Riley's second stint with the Miami Heat. (I think his Heat team got swept by the Bulls in the 96 first round playoffs)

But then again, Iguess when you coach/play in the 90's Michael Jordan era, it doesn't really matter because you weren't going to win any series.

Even when I started watching the NBA at about the same time as you did, debiler, that kind of bias doesn't have an effect on me. I was a huge, huge Penny Hardaway fan, but nowadays, I think the Magic stink (with the exception of Dwight Howard). I still don't like the Houston Rockets or the Chicago Bulls, but I thought Olajuwon was amazing and Jordan was incredible. Today, I'm a Raptors fan mainly due to my Canadian bias, and I have a lot of respect for organizations that focus on winning, like the Spurs, Pacers, and Suns. I also have admiration for defensive-minded teams, like the Pistons and Spurs.

the knicks stereotype of defense defense defense has changed over the years...at least the 90s knicks were about defense first..

The Pacers have always been a primarily defensive team. Which is funny, because our franchise player has been Reggie Miller, who was not at all known for his defense (although he was better then people think).
