Johnson's calf injury could end his season

Mon Mar 12, 2007 6:54 pm

Atlanta (Ticker) -- All-Star swingman Joe Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks could be sidelined for up to a month with a right calf contusion, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on its Web site Thursday.

Johnson suffered the injury when teammate Estaben Batista kicked him in the leg during Monday's 88-81 loss to the Miami Heat. Johnson, who leads the team in scoring, missed Wednesday's win over Washington.
"We've been down this road all season," Hawks coach Mike Woodson told the AJC. "We'll have to battle as best we can without Joe just like we did when other guys were out. But there's no question that this hurts in a big way, because Joe is such a big part of what we're about."

An All-Star for the time this season, Johnson had missed four games earlier with a strain to the same calf from December 10-15.

The 26-year-old Johnson is averaging a career-high 25.0 points and 4.4 assists through 57 contests in his second season with Atlanta.

Tue Mar 13, 2007 11:59 am

If its top 3 protected what does it mean if they get a top 3 pick? When do Phoenix get their pick?

Wed Mar 14, 2007 2:43 am

If the Hawks manage to get pick 1, 2 or 3, the Suns don't get that draftee. The Hawks are allowed to keep that player, hence Top 3 Pick Protected.

If the Hawks get anything below 1, 2 or 3...then it goes to the Suns. Capiche?

Atleast that's what I think that means. If it's wrong, do correct me.

Regarding when the Suns get to pick, say the Hawks land in the top three this year, if I'm not mistaken the Suns then get the Hawks' 2008 first round pick. Meaning, it just moves a year. This year however, it won't be protected. So if the Hawks sucked major nuts in 2007 and landed the first pick, that would go to Suns (no protection) for the Johnson deal. This is speculation on my part, but I think that's how it works.

Basically it comes down to Hawks fucked themselves with the Suns. Without protection.

With the bad luck the Hawks have had with drafts would you be surprised if Oden and Durant waited till next year and the Suns picked up another nice piece.

Jackal is right. It just moves to the next year.

Eventually the top 3 protection runs out. That's how the Nuggets got Carmelo. Luckily for the Suns, the Hawks will always have a top 5 or so pick, so it really doesnt matter when they draft (though this year would be better since it's so loaded).

I think the protection is agreed upon, not that it just runs out.

Some of them are protected for just one year, some go protected for a few years, some not protected at all and some go protected for x amount of years and then go unprotected.

Man that sucks for the hawaks, as well as myself, seeing how I have him on my fantasy team.
