Eddie Jones Waived.

Postby Martti. on Wed Jan 31, 2007 5:59 am

Memphis, Tennessee – Memphis Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced today the Grizzlies have waived guard Eddie Jones.

In 29 games this season, Jones averaged 5.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 19.3 minutes per game. The veteran guard scored a season-high 19 points, including the game-winning shot, in a 132-130 overtime victory on Jan. 24 at Utah.

“We thank Eddie for his tremendous contributions during his stay in Memphis,” said West. “He was a consummate professional and we wish him well in his future basketball endeavors. On a personal note, I think he has a bright future in basketball after his playing days are over.”

Last season he averaged 11.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.75 steals in 75 games. His 1.75 steals per game was the highest average by a Grizzly since the team moved to Memphis. In four playoff appearances against Dallas, he averaged 10.3 points per game, the second-highest scoring average on the team.

Jones was acquired by Memphis from Miami in a five-team trade on August 2, 2005. In 104 games with Memphis, he averaged 10.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Through 872 career games, Jones is averaging 15.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

so sad. I'm a huge Eddie fan since he was with the Lakers. Funny how Jerry was the one that drafted him too.

These articles are kind of conflicting. I was under the impression he was actively looking for a buyout, but the first post says they waived him as if they were sick of him.

He's a solid defender. Well, at least he was some time ago, since I don't follow the Grizzlies. I think something fresh is desperately needed for the Heat, even though I wish they miss out the playoffs.

yeah it seemed like he wasn't looking to get a buyout considering that he's been playing well since he got back. He's on one of yahoo's "hot" fantasy guards for the week

and i don't remember Eddie hating Shaq, especially because he was never looking to be the star of the team, unlike Kobe.

Why on earth did the Grizzlies waive him? He may not be as good as he once was but he is a solid player.

I had heard that Jerry West wanted him to have a chance to be a role player on a contending team. West has a lot of respect for EJ, so it doesn't surprise me.

I remember hearing something like that a while ago. I wouldn't be shocked if its true, they were on the same team twice and both times it wasn't for long since EJ got traded.

What do you call a power forward that averages 7 rebounds?
A small forward.

He didn't even want to be in Memphis, plus he had a huge ass contract. I liked Eddie and wish him well, but now Rudy Gay really has some value

Waiving him doesn't exempt them from paying out his contract.

I don't know much about the business side of the NBA at all, but doesn't a buy out mean that they are free of his contract?

Either way, I think this was his last season on contract.

I do think that this whole waiving/buy-out thing was made in good spirits by both sides. I think EJ wants to win and Memphis isn't exactly competing for the play-offs, if you know what I mean. They are in the other running, you know that Oden/Durant thing. And as rebuilding team, it makes full sense to me to clear out the old guys and give the young guns playing time to develop. Gay will now be gay as his playing time just got upped (just had to put that)!

If Eddie Jones goes to Miami, he'll end up as an FA next summer... So he will sign for the league minimum and see if he can win a title with Miami. I don't see that happening since Shaq is already hurt again and it's not the knee now. On Miami he will get at least decent playing time and will probably push some of those young guys back on the roster once more... Miami is a team that needs to be blown to bits in the next couple of off-seasons and it's intresting to see what they can do with the veterans, trade wise that is...

Would make sense. An athletic players is always an upgrade over Antoiane Walker. But to be honest, besides Haslem and the untouchables they have not a lot to offer.
