Technical Fouls and Loose-Ball Fouls

I'm still getting used to basketball now but there's two things I still don't understand. I mean, I was a fan of basketball since I was really little and all but only got addicted to watching it once NBA Live 2003 came out. Anyway, I just want to know what are technical fouls and loose-ball fouls.

Technical foul are usually called:
when you start arguing with the referee and say something bad to him.
when 2 start fighting get technical each player, etc.

Loose ball fouls are nothing more than charging fouls back to the game.

The tech fouls Scub' has mentioned are unsportsmanlike technicals. Technical fouls are also awarded due to technicalaties (hence the name), kind of as an all-purpose call for various situations (eg. calling a timeout when you have none left, a penalty for the 3 Second Defensive violation, etc). The "regular" techs were more common when the illegal defense rules were still in place, unsportsmanlike techs are generally the more common of the two.

Loose ball fouls are usually commited when two players get tangled up going for the ball, or when a player comes from behind another player to grab a rebound and makes too much contact. Basically, making enough contact to warrant a foul when there is a loose ball/rebound.

Well, yes. Basically I just wanted to mention basically when Players get those, to give him an idea of what it was. But yes, you are right, there's a bunch of possibilities of getting them.

I know, my intention was to add to your explanation, not disprove it, sorry if it came off that way. It's unfortunate that when technical fouls are mentioned, player misconduct is what comes to mind (unsportsmanlike techs are what I would have thought of first too).

Nah, it's ok. I know you just added some more possibilities I wouldn't think about at the moment. You are right, when someone mentions those just those I mentioned come to your mind. However I still don't get what is that 3 second defensive violation about, I know the excessive (2) of illegal defense would get you a technical as well, but do you have a clear idea of that 3 second defensive violation?

Basically it's a "3 seconds without defending someone" rule, kind of a more leniant version of illegal defense. You must be within arm's length of a player when you are on defense. This basically means you can't play the kind of zone where you just stick a 7 footer under the basket.

This new defensive rule also allows players to double team away from the ball, something that was not allowed with the illegal defense rules.

Plenty of times I've heard of fouls being "awarded" to a player. "Award" does necessarily have positive connotations. It can be another way of saying the player was given a foul, assigned a foul, etc. As far as I'm aware, it's not the humourous mistake you make it out to be.
