NBA Draft Heights and Weights
NBA Draft Athleticism Tests

Two very fun things to read here. Also there was a big surprise with Rodney Carney who measured in at 6.5'5. His stock might fall a little bit.

Athleticism Tests; I cant beleive that Jordan Farmar had the best vertical leap of the people who participated. He beat Carney, Gay, and Thomas. David Noel out of North Carolina came out the best overall workout though.

Sat Jun 17, 2006 4:57 pm

Random thoughts:

LaMarcus Aldridge/Tyrus Thomas only scored an 8 on the bench press?
Excellent results from Will Blalock, he's one of my favourites in the draft.
Pretty average showing from Steve Novak
David Noel's numbers look fantastic
31" vertical from Saer Sene is pretty poor, people have been raving about his vertical

Edit: According to ESPN Insider, Bargnani's measurements at that camp thing in Europe came out like this:

7'1 1/4" in shoes
249 lbs
9'2" standing reach

Chad Ford says he's still growing.

Brewer is the real deal. He has the pure athleticism, size and skills to contribute to any backcourt in the league. He seems to be very Iguodala like - his athleticism was also a bit underhyped (if that's even possible) coming out of college and possesed the same kind of versatility as Brewer does. I was kinda suprised with Aldridge having such lousy outing in the combines, but then again, we shouldn't read too much this results. Wade's numbers weren't as spectacular as one would think, but he's still one of the top athletes in the league - not to mention his actual basketball qualities.

Here's a comparison of Bosh and Aldridge:
Bosh
Height: (w/ and w/o shoes): 6'11 1/2'' | 6'10 1/4'''
Weight (predraft): 225 lbs
Wingspan: 7'3 1/2''
Standing Reach: 9'1''

Aldridge

Height: (w/ and w/o shoes): 6'11 | 6'10
Weight (predraft): 234 lbs
Wingspan: 7'4 3/4'
Standing Reach: 9'2''

Bench press | One step vertical | Lane agility | Sprint
Bosh: 9 | 33'' | 11.8 | 3.30
AldridgE: 8 | 34'' | 12.02 | 3.43

Bosh has an edge in the athleticism department, at least measurements-wise, but the difference isn't exactly big. Watching them play, they have more or less the same athletic basis to build their games on, with Aldridge having the edge with having a bigger frame and therefore more potential in that department. They also seem to have very similar personalities coming out of college, which makes a good case for my comparison.

Random notes:
-Morrison isn't the greatest athlete out there, but his lack of neck and high shoulders give him a great standing reach, which will come out handy when trying to get his shot off in the pros. IMO, he's the #1 prospect on my board. Sure, there are some players that could end up being better than him, but his combination of skills, competivness and marketing potential is what makes him really stand out in this relatively talent-free draft class. He has as much talent as anyone, he'll find out a way to better his D and his mentality and clutchness will automatically win any team a game or two.
-A quote from FreeDarko.com:
(...) And finally, I would not be revealing this were I not in a positively shitty mood after that game: not to pile on Redick, but a reliable female undergrad source at Duke has told me that it is a well-known fact that he likes to piss on the ladies. It's pretty much understood if he takes you home. (...)

. Combine that with his inability to make his own shot, short arms, underwhelming athleticism and stupidity to drink&drive at the worst possible time, and you got yourself a interesting Trailblazer prospect.
-Rajon Rondo - are his stocks rising or falling? He's the #1 USA prospect at PG, IMO. I like Marcus Williams and his game, but he seems to be a bit to bad athletically to make things work. Hopefully, he'll prove me wrong.
-Bargnani is reportedly measuring out at 7'1 (with shoes), 250 pounds and 9'2 standing reach. That's a superb size for a PF prospect (although relatively small standing reach tells us something about his wingspan), but the problem is that he can't use it.

Edit: Sene's vertical isn't anything special, but he has quick hoops, which is more important than the actual height of his jump, especially if a guy has a 9'5 standing reach. Not to mention that his no-step vertical is 28'5, which is great for a legit 7 footer and more important than a one-step when you're blocking shots.

Daniel Horton #4 overall. If he can shape up his attitude, which anyone can do, he could be a mid to late 2nd round pick...maybe to a bad team like Bernard Robinson went to, he could stick and be a productive guy.

Sat Jun 17, 2006 5:17 pm

A great article about meaning of the abovementioned results: http://draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=1351.

Edit: Deron Williams versus Marcus Williams. Both players seem to be very similar players if the scouting reports are all what you base your opinion on. In reality, I like Marcus' decision making a bit more, but when it comes to other aspect of the game, Deron wins them all. He's a much better shooter, better athlete (he's actually a bit underrated in that area of his game), better penetrator and has also better feel for the game on the defensive end of the court. Size-wise, they're similar, but like I said, Deron is generally better psychicaly and game wise.

Deron
Height: (w/ and w/o shoes): 6'2 3/4'' | 6'1 3/4''
Weight (predraft): 202
Wingspan: 6'6 1/4''
Standing Reach: 8'2''

Marcus

Height: (w/ and w/o shoes): 6'3 1/4'' | 6'2''
Weight (predraft): 215
Wingspan: 6'7''
Standing Reach: 8'1 1/2''

Bench press | One step vertical | Lane agility | Sprint
Deron: 15 | 35" | 10.83 | 3.25
Marcus: 4 | 28'' | 11.3 | 3.4

Seems as though Rodney Carney is probably the quickest player in the draft with a 3.06 3/4 Court Sprint. I think that was the best listed. I expect big things from him in the future.

Sun Jun 18, 2006 9:55 pm

Well, I don't. I haven't seen him play yet, but he has all the predispositions of a player who plays hard only in his contract years. Gay is at least a workout warrior, but Carney fails even there. He gives you great atletic results, but there are to many red flags on him to be drafted high (=lottery). Lack of legit SG skills at 6'6 with shoes (everyone were expecting him to measure out at 6'7, 6'8 and projected him as a legit swingman), doesn't have elite length, bad basketball IQ, no heart, et cetera, et cetera. IMO, he's the next NBADraft.net lists Richard Jefferson as his comparison, but RJ is something like 6'8 1/2 in shoes with 7+ foot wingspan. IMO, he's the Dahntay Jones with a jumpshot.

Sun Jun 18, 2006 11:24 pm

Fenix wrote:IMO, he's the Dahntay Jones with a jumpshot.

I think that's a pretty good comparison actually (Y) depending on how you rate Dahntay Jones that is  I like Dahntay & I think if he landed in the right situation he could be solid....Carney really needs to land in the right situation....he'll definitely be more effective than Dahntay but I dunno....

my NBA comparison for Rodney Carney is a pre-injury Derek Anderson....

Sun Jun 18, 2006 11:40 pm

Wasn't Derek Anderson a PG in college?

Mon Jun 19, 2006 12:31 am

He's a PG in NBA Live 2004, so there's a chance of that.

Mon Jun 19, 2006 12:34 am

Yeah, Derek Anderson is a combo guard rather than a SF/SG swingman. I still think Carney will be a good player, but I wasn't very impressed with how he played in College. He seemed to never take advantage of his athletic ability.

Mon Jun 19, 2006 3:46 am

Wow, Noel is just .01 behind Carney in a court sprint speed.

But where's James White at? I'd like to see his stuff.

Mon Jun 19, 2006 4:05 am

Bargnani's scouting report by RealGM. I don't agree with the writer on all accounts, but he pretty much sums up my feelings.

The comparison with Darko fascinates me the most. They are both 7'1 Euros, but what else do they have in common? Sure, Darko has three years of NBA ball under his belt, but he played only in half of one of them and considering than him and Bargnani are pretty much the same age, it's fair to compare them.

Andreas Bargnani
Born:27.10.1985
Height (w/o and w/ shoes): / | 7' 1/4''
Weight: 248
Standing reach: 9'2''

Darko Milicic
Born:20.6.1985
Height (w/o and w/ shoes): 6'11 1/2 | 7' 3/4''
Weight: 250 (predraft camp)
Standing reach: 9'3 1/2

So, the age difference is only 4 months, Darko has and will have the better body of the two, with potential to hold more weight and also has elite length for his size, while Bargnani is only average in that department (probably around 7 foot wingspan at his shoulder width), but it will suffice if he's means to emulate Dirk's style of play.

Atletically, I thought Bargnani has the edge in the quickness department, but after watching Darko play in the Magic uniform, I'd say they're pretty much even. Thing is, as much as Darko got critized for playing on the perimeter too much, he's still inside way more than Bargnani is, who greatly bases his game on penetrations, which makes him use his quickness better&more and that will work too in the League, once he polishes a bit his midrange game.

Offensively, Bargnani is trully unique. He plays like a true SF and has all the tools to make it work. His jumpshot is nice and has Dirk-like potential in that area of his game, he can handle the ball, create his own shot, shoot of the dribble, get to the basket, has a nice crossover, etc., etc.. He doesn't show a lot of post moves and he's far from having a go-to move in the paint, but considering what kind of a threat he represenets on the perimeter and his height, an effective inside move or two will be easy to add. He'll be probably be guarded by smaller players, which will make easier for hime when it comes to punish them to size, the only problem is that he'll have to learn that. Dirk still has problems with that, as seen in this playoffs. Darko has an edge in: post moves (his hook is already unstoppable), footwork and passing, but he isn't nearly as creative with the ball nor he does have 3pt range.

Defensivelly, Darko is a clear winner here. He has better length, strength&shot blocking instincts and is one of the better big man defenders in the League. Bargnani on the other hand will have problems defending people man-to-man, both big or small players. He isn't quick enough to defend SFs and not strong enough (250 pounds are deceiving) to defend most of the PFs. His shotblocking instincts will probably translate into the league, although not as good as some expect. But still, I expect him to make big steps on defense. He showed that he isn't a hardgainer, his body is still maturing (look at his neck) and he'll soon have enough strength to bother anyone in the League.

So who wins? It depends. I think Bargnani has better intagibles and is more competive (although I could be wrong - we'll see it next year, when Darko soldifies his position in Orlando), although Darko surely doesn't lack heart. Bargnani is probably more clutch, etc., but the main difference is - he doesn't have any question marks surrounding him as Darko does. Are Darko's only product of Brown unfairly benching him? We won't know until he proves us wrong. But if they were in the same draft, I'd take Darko over him because of his post skills, passing and vastly superior defense.

Jae...
call me a hater but I'm a little suspicious about Bargani's measurements. after all those were taken by the team trainer.

i'm pretty surprised by Aldridge's bench press. Thomas not so much since he had that neck injury and is rail thin skinny

DraftExpress coverage has been tops so far amongst the big hitters. and there's no $ required to read any part of their site. kudos to them (Y)

Yeah that's understandable. I remember we had to do measurements for a basketball tournament once, I think I measured out at about 6'8 but when I looked up I could actually see the tape measurer like 4 inches over my head  so anything's possible.
