new espn poll

Postby Sauru on Tue May 02, 2006 11:25 am

just noticed this on espn.com, sorry if someone else posted already. i thought it was a pretty cool poll and its something you see people talk about alot on these forums.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/fe ... neup/index

they take the 16 teams with the most playoff success and then take thier 10 best players of all time to make the teams and have them mathup in a sort of ultimate playoff fantasy thing. any thoughts on who you all would pick? i myself will go with boston with bulls and lakers to follow

That's pretty cool. Most likely it'll be Boston vs. LA in the Finals.

SCOUTING REPORT: With nine Hall of Famers, how can the Celtics lose?

They said it themselves. Celtics would cream those teams.

how about houston, a little weak in the guards but imagine a lineup of malone, olajuwan, and hayes at small forward, plus tmac could play the 2. SCARY!

Nice twist on the usual champions vs champions historical polls they usually do. (Y) I'm also anticipating a Lakers/Celtics Finals in the voting.

That said, I'm not sure the Celtics would dominate everyone simply because they have 9 Hall of Famers. After all, the 1961 team had 7 Hall of Famers on the roster and it's not as though they beat everyone by an average of 50 points and were undefeated.

There's definitely some sleeper teams

Philadelphia:
Iverson, Chamberlain, Barkley, Dr J

Knicks:
Ewing, Reed, McAdoo, King, Monroe, Frazier

Utah:
Maravich, Stockton, Dantley, Malone, Kirikenko, Eaton

I'd say the Knicks would stand the best chance of beating the Lakers/Celtics. The Bucks are a sleeper amongst sleepers, if that's possible, if they had Kareem instead of Vin Baker () they'd go pretty far.

F*ck the lakers and celtics.... Bulls all the way baby! people don't understand how intimidating it'd be going against Pippen, Rodman, Love, Gilmore and among them there is the greatest Michael Jordan. No team will be able to withstand the offensive/defensive balance of the Bulls. They've got the perfect blend of players to make it to the finals and win it all.

i would say that only the bulls would have a chance imo to beat the celtics. sure one could say also the lakers, or really any team as any team filled with all time greats could on any night get hot and dominate but imo that celtics team would just be too deep and the only team with a remote chance would be the bulls and that would only be if they were all on thier best game each night. still, just imagine a jordan/bird shoot out, man would that have been fun to watch.

All the defensive force from the Bulls will be too much for the Celtics to handle. Either Pippen or Rodman will be able to shut down Bird, and Russell is not a offensive force so as long as Gilmore can contain him, and Jordan does his thing as well as the 4th quarter heroics from Gordon the Bulls will be in good standing.

Celtics have:

C - The best defensive player ever: Bill Russell
PF - Kevin McHale
SF - The best shooter ever: Larry Bird
SG - Paul Pierce
PG - One of the best point guards ever: Bob Cousy

Please tell me how the hell you can ever beat this team. Bill Russell dominated Chamberlain, so he could dominate probably any other center defensively. Larry Bird is well Larry Bird and Cousy could dish it to anyone. There is no way any team can beat these Celtics...and I don't even like them!
Bored.

i just need to note that you cant shut down bird, just like you cant shut down jordan. the best one could hope to do against bird was hope to hold him back a bit. then again he could always just explode on you at any given night.

now imo bird is not the main reason the celtics win this thing. everyone wants to talk about defense but no one really is mentioning the celtics defense. they got the best defender in the middle ever. having russel back there allows for alot of mistakes by the other 4 players cause that is really all he did, fix the other players mistakes. also while we are on the defense kick, the celtics would have 4 damn good scorers on the court all the time. russel being the worst scorer in the lineup would basically just score his points from put backs and dishes from when he was left alone.

Bill Russell dominated Chamberlain

No he didn't. When I was researching his 100 point game, I came across an article that proved that to be completely wrong. I'll try and find it later.
