Suns' Stoudemire out for 1-2 weeks

MILWAUKEE – Amare Stoudemire will miss tonight’s game in Milwaukee and at least the next 1 to 2 weeks while he backs off his comeback from knee surgery after only three games. If Stoudemire’s condition does not improve over that time, Suns coach Mike D’Antoni said the team has no qualms about shutting down their 23-year-old star for the rest of the season – although he stressed that’s not the gameplan at this point.

“He’s supposed to be getting better, but he was getting worse with each game,” D’Antoni said Monday afternoon. “We don’t want him out there stiff-legged like he was (Monday night) in New Jersey. We’re not going to put him through that. It’s not the right thing for him, and it’s not right for the team either.

“We’re going to scale it back to scrimmaging and rehab and see if he gets better. If he does, we’ll go from there. If he doesn’t … we’ll move forward and he’ll work on getting healthy.”

Six days ago, Stoudemire returned to action impressively, scoring 20 points in just 19 minutes against Portland nearly six months after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee. But he scored only six points last Saturday against Denver and was scoreless in 14 stiff-legged minutes in a 110-72 loss in New Jersey Monday night.

Unable to elevate or run with any flexibility, Stoudemire complained of pain and soreness in both knees after the game and talked about not playing until he felt better.

“It’s tough on both knees now. I really want to take my time, and then get back out there," he said. “I am thinking it’s supposed to be getting better and better and it’s not, it’s quite the opposite. “I can’t get any lift. I’m not getting up on my jumper and running-wise, there is pain now. It’s tough to get loose and sore all the way around the board.”

Stoudemire hoped to play 20 minutes a game during this road trip, which concludes Sunday with a nationally televised game with Detroit, and inch up his minutes from there. But he went from 19 minutes against Portland to 17 against Denver and only 14 against the Nets, missing all six shots and going scoreless as the Suns endured a 38-point defeat, the third-worst loss in franchise history.

When the Suns return from Detroit, they will have only nine regular season games remaining.

Without Stoudemire, Phoenix will trudge on without much help inside. Despite positive healing to the stress fracture in his foot, the Suns still don’t expect to have center Kurt Thomas back until at least the second round of the playoffs, while veteran Brian Grant is still in the early stages of his comeback from knee surgery.

It's hard to be optimistic. I can't recall a player ever coming back from microfracture surgery near 100%.

this was the same guy in the playoffs last year scoring like 30something points a game against tim duncan and the spurs =/

Well he shouldn't have rushed things and should have xame back in playoffs. Phoenix was doing good w/o him, he would have brought more force for the Suns, now I doubt he'll do much in playoffs!

i really hope he gets better for playoffs or at least 100% for next season, i HATE seeing great players injured and unable to play at 100%

after reading the article, I am unclear how long he will be out.

Im pretty disappointed cuz I wanted to see him come back and do well. Oh well, this dont always work out perfectly.

He was obviously doing fine as he got some good results. So I think he was doing well enough to come back. But you can never be sure how you'll react to the next level. He was doing well in practice and had basically 'beat' that level, so putting him in the game was a good idea.

But I'm glad they're not stubborn enough to keep him in the lineup. Get well soon.

Amare is a great player, and a great guy.

Hope he comes back soon, maybe in the playoff if he feels well.

Needless to say, it's the right thing to do. Given it seems he's not close enough to 100% to be out there it might be worth shutting him down for the season. Only due to the knee though; I still say the risk of destroying the team's chemistry is very small. But if he can't go, he can't go. Simple as that.

Ever since Amares come back Phx has been average or below that.

Look at them today - blown out by bucks.
Last game - blown out by nets.

I dunno what will happen with him, but I think he should just stay out til the end of the season.

Amare didn't play tonight. And the Bucks made nearly every jumpshot they took, and were 18-31 from 3pt... that's just one lucky night.

I hardly believe you can judge Amare's impact on just the game vs the Nets. How often do you think Steve Nash will go scoreless??

^^True, True, and its not like the Nets suck heck they beat the pistons too, maybe just a bad night for the Suns.

Amare out again this sucks big time but I think its better if he gets 100% then come back with his A+++++ Game.

So should he play scrimmage for the rest of his career? His minutes were limited, and he said he felt 80%.

Personally, I don't find the situation very amusing. Players these days are often criticised for being pampered and sitting out games they could have stuck it out and played. It's why Allen Iverson is looked upon as being such a warrior the way he goes out and plays banged up. Amare wants to play basketball, get out there and compete (not to mention fulfil his contractual obligations) and you're saying he deserves to get injured?

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree on this one, but your take on the situation really baffles me.

He didn't re-injure himself. He's just playing a little slower and after moving up to the next level of basketball he got stiff. It's nothing out of the ordinary.

Actually, I don't think that Amare should come right back in the playoffs. He should get at least a few regular season games experience, because to come back in the playoffs, where the intensity is so much higher, is obviously much more difficult than to come back with a few regular season games left, play in them to get warmed up, and then come out raring to go for the playoffs. Of course, Amare shouldn't come back until he's 100% or near that, but it would be a good idea for him to play the last few games of the season, just to get accustomed to playing.

I heard he's looking like a less skilful Chris Webber at the moment.
