Does Denver regret the Kenyon Martin deal?

Postby EGarrett on Sat Mar 11, 2006 7:03 pm

Martin's been injured on and off, and they're paying him the max for 14 points and 6 boards. And the Nets bilked them out of three first-round picks.

Who do you think won in that deal?

Nets, of course. Why would anyone want Martin for all that money?

Martin went on a tear during his last few seasons with the Nets, and thats probably what influenced Denver to shell out all of that cash for him. Although Andre Miller is a good point guard, he just doesn't seem to have the ability to play like he used to in New Jersey with Kidd.

He's supposedly one of the best defenders at his position, but it's kind of hard to defend someone when you're on the IR for 2/3 of the season.....

Prior to injury K-Mart was a pretty good defender. Anyways, Jason Kidd made him look good since those Nets were able to finish a fastbreak in 2 seconds flat.

K-Mart is trash without Jason Kidd. He can put up big numbers but isn't consistent enough for him to deserve all that money.

Denver is the winner. K-Mart has been the emotional leader for Nuggets/ gave the team some toughness... when healthy. So what if he got a big contract? If it wasn't Denver, it would have been another team overpaying for him

if most of those picks New Jersey got from the trade are Denvers... those picks will be in the 16-20 range(N) since Denver will be making the playoffs

What has New Jersey done with the 1st round picks?

Actually if u look at the stats, he is doing ok. For a banged up player he avges 14 PPG and 6 RPG. Everyone in Denver thinks he should play like Carmelo just cuz he gets payed 11m in a year. He only avged 1.5 PPG more in New Jersey.

They traded fr Vince Carter and I'd take him over K-Mart any day.

I'd love both.

And K-Marts doing alright in Denver. People just expect more cause of his big paycheck. He's far from bad though. There's a lot worse players in the NBA getting big money. Look at most of the Knicks..

at one point Nets GM were saying he made a bad decision about Martin.
True Kidd made him look good butits easier to make Martin look good than Krisk or Collins!
In anycase, u cant look at it as Nets got the better deal cuz matin was injured alot. As far as i know he got injured playing...and u can only guess if he would have gotten injured playing else where..luck of the draw..
They main reason they didnt sign him was cuz of $$$

The deal looks a lot better for the Nets now since they were able to acquire Vince Carter so cheaply. Had they not reloaded with the Vince trade last year, they might well be still floundering and hoping for some help to come with those draft picks. But the fact remains that they did make the situation work so the deal is not so bad.

For the deal itself, I'll go with Denver as well because as it stands they benefited the most out of that one deal. But Rod Thorn of course did a fine job salvaging the situation by swinging a much better deal for the Nets early last year. Perhaps it worked out better for the Nets in the end as they have a better Big Three as it stands today but for that one deal, it's in Denver's favour.

Nets get better deal, but just think if he went to the Suns (impossible).

They could move Amare to C, and then Nash could dish it to K-Mart, Amare, or Matrix

Umm, he made 2 3s the last game he palyed, he shots decent, he grabbed boards, played good defense, what else do you want? Hell, I don't think he is the best PF in the league, but still. He did not play bad. I wish Nuggets had Dirk though.

This is talking about the overall deal, which involves the money. Paying a player that much money only means you're restricting yourself financially and his value doesn't seem that high after missing so much of the season and he probably now has the "injury prone" label on him now.

I'm not a fan of Kenyon Martin. He seems like he has no consistent offensive game unless kidd is feeding him the ball on a fastbreak.

fair enough

but we're talking about the NBA here. any nba starter caliber player who's coming off his rookie contract is going to get overpaid, especially if that player just had his best year and has playoff experience

Martin's PERFECT for the Knicks! Injured player with a big contract to keep us in salary-cap hell even more - sign him, Zeke!
