Hahah what a vague topic! But seriously, this isnt breaking news, but a long rant. I'm talking about the era of basketball that I grew up watching. When I was younger, I had no time of day for basketball. I actually started to gain interest through collecting rugby league cards, and the australian card magazine (Silhouette Stadium :proud:) was 3/4 basketball cards. Once I had completed the rugby league i started to collect basketball cards and watching it on early mornings on sunday. I remember Terry Mills hitting a big 3 as the shot clock ran down to help seal a detroit victory. I also remember a block early in a game by Kevin Garnett on Charles Barkley and the suns. I remember being naive enough to think that the Magic could actually beat the 95/96 bulls becuase of the lack of centre on the bulls. Funny how I didn't think that a lack of sg to match up with jordan would hurt orlando. I was an idiot :).

Then the next season the games moved to sunday afternoon, and thats when I really, really started to get into following the NBA. I rememeber the heat getting a road win in chicago on a dan marjle 3. I remember watching the bulls totally dismantle the rockets in the united centre just after they had gotten barkley. I remember the Jazz manufactoring a win on the road against the rockets, just after barkley hit a 3 with the clock expiring that looked like they had sealed it. I remember being filthy at myself for turning the tv on in the morning with one minute left in a game between the heat and the knicks in miami, with the knicks up, and praying that the game would go into overtime. I remember how excited I was when the last game of the regular season was on and it was chicago and new york with the knicks getting their first win in the united centre and denying the bulls back to back 70 win seasons.

Then in 1998 my parents switched cable companies and we were now getting 2 games a week plus playoffs! I was in heaven. The first game I got to see was Detroit @ Miami and miami demolished them. But one game that really stood out was Chicago @ Indiana. The bulls were just in cruise control and at the end of the third, jordan hit a buzzer beater. He looked unimpressed and went rank on the official for not calling a foul. Even then he wasnt satisfied. Such a great player man, so hungry. Once the playoffs started, they showed game one between the bulls and the nets, where chris gatling led a late run to force an overtime, then jordan took their hearts out with the steal on kittles then the facial on kendall gill. I also remember waking up at 3 am on a school morning to watch game 5 between the knicks and heat (no ewing, lj or mourning) and the knicks win in a controlled fashion.

Then in the second round I remember game 3 and 4 of the series between the bulls and hornets, where the bulls dropped game 2 but totally dominated the hornets on their home floor. And who could forget the Lakers steamrolling past the sonics in the second round and the hype for a bulls/lakers finals. Then utah swept the lakers and made them look like chumps. The Bulls however were playing the pacers, and i remember not looking at the game in the morning becuase i had to goto school, and i could watch the replay at night. If i peeked, i wouldve seen the score around midway during the 2nd quarter and it wouldnt be as fun watching the game up until that point. That reggie three in game 4.. whoa.

Then the finals that year, jesus christ. What a crazy ride. Everyone was labelling utah as the favourites, including myself, but the more i think about it, we were just fooling ourselves. We all knew utah was the underdog becuase of who they were up against. we were trying to trick ourselves into thinking it was closer than it was. The first game was a classic, with utah prevailing in overtime. Then the bulls dominated, highlighted by the game 3 blowout. But to utah's credit, they won game 5 on the back of karl malone.

The game 6, i wagged school for this game (somthing ive since told my parents :proud:). Utah was surging at home, and chicago with a pippen at 20%, jordan did the most amazing sequence i have ever seen. the drive, the steal, the shot. I wasnt suprised becuase who did it, but that doesnt mean i was any less in awe. I was cheering for utah in that game and series, but how could anyone not appreciate that?

Then it all changed. The lockout. The retirment. It's never really been the same since. MJ came back, and i was thrilled to death. Sure it may have "hurt" his legacy", but if he announced a comeback tommorow, id be thrilled again. Malone never recovered from that strip. Pippen never recovered from the back injury. Dunca, Shaq, Kobe, KG, Iverson, Vince, Kidd all took over the league, but not in the same dominating fashion of karl malone, mj, pippen, stockton, barkley, ewing. kobe, kg, vince and iverson all have missed the playoffs during their primes. Can you imagine any of the greats from the 90's enduring that (injuries for more than 45 games in a season excludes them that year)?

And I know the era of the 90's has been long gone, but its only just hit home with me now. Todays game is great, with kobe, AI, lebron, melo, wade, shaq, duncan, chauncey, kg, vince, tmac.. but its not the same. and it never will be.

Post your favourite memories and your favourite era.

Great topic. (Y)

As anyone who's been around the forums long enough probably knows, the 90s is the era I identify with most. Obviously, seeing my favourite team win six championships makes it all the more special but there's something about the era just gone, some kind of aura that makes it different from today. Today's game feels...manufactured. I know that's a weird thing to say because the 90s saw a lot of commercialism and the beginnings of what we cynically refer to as the "NBA's Marketing Machine" but there's something different watching the NBA today.

Perhaps it's the fact the 90s era ended so abruptly and the footnote in the careers of those great players wasn't as impressive or dramatic, maybe the television presentations appear too sterile, maybe I'm rejecting today's stars the way older fans rejected Michael Jordan and co when they became the centre of the NBA universe. Or perhaps I'm just getting older and more cynical about the sport.

One of my favourite memories is the 1997 All-Star Game. It was actually the first All-Star game I'd seen it its entirety and I wasn't disappointed. Watching the 50 Greatest ceremony at halftime was simply fantastic. I don't mind admitting I got chills and goosebumps as that triumphant music played and each player stepped up as his name was called. Say what you will about where the players rank against each other and who should or shouldn't have been there, but that can't take away from how special that moment was.

Being a huge Michael Jordan fan, it was a thrill to see him throw one down. It didn't even have to be one of his most spectacular. Like Dr J before him, there was something special about a Jordan dunk. If Michael Jordan scored 30 or so points, had a couple of dunks and the Bulls won, I usually walked away feeling I'd watched a really good game. Any NBA Action that featured a couple of good Jordan highlights, I'd be sure to tape and watch over and over.

Even though I get to see live games these days, there was something special, even "magical", about setting the VCR to tape the Game of the Week on Channel Ten and NBA Action then getting up early the next day to watch them. Perhaps it was just "childish" enthusiasm that's missing now that I'm in my 20s...or perhaps I've become too cynical and critical of today's game to approach any NBA programming with the same kind of eagerness, time after time.

I could go on and on about my favourite games but I might leave that for a later post. My favourite aspect of the 90s was probably the effect it had on me, how my cousin and I would spend the school holidays watching basketball videos, buying basketball cards, reenacting our favourite moves and staging our own episodes of NBA Action in the backyard, how completely we were "into" the game. Enthusiastic as I am about today's league, even though "I (still) love this game!", my appreciation for the 90s will probably never be surpassed.

I was very privileged to have a channel called DSF, which broadcasted 2 and sometimes 3 Live games a week. Even though it was a german channel, it didn't show Detleft Schrempf to the point where you hated the guy.

On top of that the FTA channel had "Game of the week" as well.

No instead they had some great games between equal teams and not the sill over hype ESPN presents. I remember some games, like when Mark Jackson broke a assists record against the Lakers in the 1st half (which Denver lost). Then there was the Pistons dismantling the Bulls in their 69-13 season, that was a beautiful game. How about Glen Rice dropping 25+ in the All-Star game and then a cpl of nights later facing Jordan & the Bulls.

How about those playoff games, Rex Chapman for 3 against Sonics. CLASSIC!!!!

Oh man, too many games & memories to list, but indeed i miss the 90's era where there was plenty of rich rivalries.

Then we moved to Australia....no more NBA on FTA....i only remember 2 games ever been shown here post 1998...Orlando v Philly playoffs game, and then the last game of Spurs championship run vs Knicks. After that no more.

Fortunately, theres the internet & cable TV.

I've grown to despise the fact that ego and greed has taken the place of character and competitive spirit. I find it difficult watching basketball games, I cringe every time some bench scrub beats his chest after shooting 1/7 in a blowout loss. Everytime some deranged player comes out bagging his team, his teammates and his coach in some pathetic selfish quest for success. As if not being good enough to lead your own team isn't bad enough, trying to ruin any relationships you have with afformentioned team to be traded to someone better just because you're sick of losing is worse. Sure other players have pursued wins, and have done so in a mature classy way. They're few and far between however.

I'm another one of those who miss the 90's, no matter what age/colour/sex/religion you were you could relate with guys like Barkley and David Robinson. There were players to suit everyone no matter what. These days it's all one big monotonous cess pool of overly athletic guys who can do little other than drive the lane and throw down one handed dunks. I've noticed that if I buy a jersey these days, it's 99.9% because of how it looks. Whether I like the colour or design, I could care less about who's name is on the back because chances are I wouldn't like them to begin with. Back in the late 80's/90's, I didn't care if the jersey was pink with lime green dots... if I liked the player I'd proudly wear it.

If it wasn't for Andrew Bogut my interest in the NBA would probably be at an all time low right now. I still keep up with what's going on with the Lakers, but as I told someone the other week, if the Lakers lose I'm not happy but it lasts maybe 15 minutes before it fades into "don't give a shit" territory. If the Sydney Roosters lose a rugby league game I'm devastated for the entire week.

It might look like I'm a 90's fan boy but I'm not... I can barely recall any moments I saw on TV. I was reading over Matthew's post and thinking "jesus how did he remember all of that". My only real memories were in order: Cedric Ceballos, Penny Hardaway throwing down a monster 1 handed dunk from the dots against Boston or something (this I remember because I tried to replicate it in my hall way), the Phoenix Suns and getting home from Grace Brothers one night to find a Rockets vs Magic finals game on, and seeing Hakeem dominating a young (thin) Shaq.

If it wasn't for the 5,000+ basketball cards I amassed over the years, I'd probably barely remember anyone from that era apart from the main guys. Even the draft has been somewhat ruined for me these days. You'd never catch a team in 1989 drafting a 14 year old 9'5 European kid who's actual height is 6'4 because he has to sit in a wheel chair but could potentially learn to walk and become a serviceable C.

I think overall I miss the "nice guys"... Grant Hill, David Robinson, John Stockton (off the court at least)... I also miss the head cases like Dennis Rodman, who despite being insane hasn't even scratched the surface of Ron Artests' mental illnesses (yes I do remember the cameraman incident). Then you had the no nonsense types like Barkley and Payton who'd talk alot of shit but could always back it up (apart from the time GP as a rook talked shit about MJ, then proceded to get horribly raped in the following game). Then someone like Charles Oakley, who's own teammates were scared to death of him.

Also the respect amongst the best players in the league is something that doesn't really exist these days. The only time it does happen is if they're friends off the court, and in most cases it's just acknowledged by some bizarre handshake or body contact designed purely to look cool. I think that's probably the most negative sports related rant I've ever gone on, but it does make you think.

One extra thing... I don't have a very good memory recall of All-Star ballotting from the late 80's-mid 90's, but I'm positive I don't remember guys who were injured for an entire season being voted in as a starter... or guys getting votes purely because they're a certain race.

the thing that's hurt me the most is the fact that there is no NBA on FTA TV....if there was, it might help....

as for now....my love would have been with college bball and international bball over pro bball....I guess school and national pride override the money for me....

as for the 90s....I wish Utah could have taken down MJ and the Bulls that 2nd time around....the Showtime Lakers (and when I say Showtime, I mean the real Showtime....as in Ced Ceballos, Anthony Peeler, Nick Van Exel and Eddie Jones....beautiful, just beautiful)....luv that 50pt game by Ced at Forum against T'wolves :P

I only really started watched basketball during the 98 finals. I had greater interests in soccer and other sports. I became hooked after witnessing that game 6 shot and rubbing it in all night to my Utah Jazz loving father.

Then I discovered NBA league pass (and NBA tv) and I would watch a million games every night and life was so damn good. At that point I began to play basketball and I was convinced that somehow I would end up in the NBA (cant help but dream it). I was pretty good but I eventually became better in other sports so I shifted focus. :)

So yeah, the 90s (late 90s) was lovely and the competition was fierce from what I have seen watching alot of those NBA Greatest games thingies. The only thing keeping me watching is Kobe Bryant and the hope that the Lakers can somehow revive that franchise into the dominant force of a couple years back.

I first started getting into the game when I first started playing basketball myself. The first basketball game I ever watched was during the NBA Finals between Orlando and Houston. I remember Hakeem dominating, and I was in awe of Penny Hardaway. For some reason, Reggie Miller was my favorite player because of that 8 points in 9 seconds thing. Penny though, went on to be my favorite player for many, many years before I discovered Vince Carter. Before that though, I remember a lot of moments, the agony of watching the Sonics and the Jazz fail against the Bulls, and the countless players and stars that were on the scene in which I learned mostly from NBA Live 95 for the Sega Genesis. I lost interest after the year 2000 when Vince started to become disinterested and whiny, and hit rock bottom when his performance went to shit in his last games with Toronto. Other than that, there are no players in the NBA that I truly admire, except for Amare Stoudemire, who works his ass off to be that explosive and versatile force that I haven't seen since the days of Shawn Kemp.

I've seen games from the 80's on satellite, and I loved that era. The era with Jordan, Bird, Dominique, Magic, Barkley, etc... it was fantastic. The players focused on fundamental ball and teamwork, and they can actually shoot, run and play defense, a lot better than the guys today.

I got into basketball in '98 because I heard about Michael Jordan and how good he is so I decided to play basketball. I hadn't seen a basketball match but I knew by newspaper that Jordan AND the Croatian Sensation Kukoc were champions and such. I was more into basketball video games (NBA Jam 8-) ) and that's where I began to like the Spurs. I didn't even know they won the '99 championship but in 2000 I knew Shaq and the Lakers were the pwn. Eventually I discovered I could watch a few basketball games on TV. I don't exactly remember my first match I saw but I know it took me a while after I became a basketballer myself and got really into it by the video games before I watched some live games.

Now I try and catch as many NBA games as I can at the moment. Which makes my era the 2000 era with Carter, LeBron etc.

I never watched a basketball game in my life until I watched the 2001 Eastern Conference finals, Sixers vs. Bucks... A.I. scored 44 and the Sixers went to the finals....

Then the next season I watched almost every game on league pass, and I still do.

yeah didnt even know basketball existed in 96 when i came, but then all my classmates played it and i got extremely into it. i got so immersed in basketball history from books and tv that i was like the basketball guru, but hs and stuff knocked all those knowledge out of my head.

i started watching and jumped on the bulls bandwagon and stuff, and since my dad worked for the university, i had like espn, tnt and stuff :)

I started to watch basketball games on ESPN Latino America, in 1996 when I saw the NBA Finals between the Bulls and the Sonics... I was four, so I couldn't understand everything about the game, like the rules and stuff (Until my 6th birthday, I thought that travelling was called only after a player took 4 steps  ). After seeing the match, I fell in love with the way Michael Jordan played the game.
In '97 I watched ony a few playoff games, including the last game of the Bulls against the Jazz in the Finals. I loved that game, and I loved the game that much that my dad had to buy me 400$ of basketball stuff in one day
In '98 I started to play in the neighobourhood's club, but I stopped because I sprained my ankle, and it hurted so much because I was only six.
From that day until late 1999, I didn't play or watch basketball. I used to play soccer in that period. But then when in the late 1999, NBA Live 2000 came out, I was like: "Wow, it looks so reeeeaaalll!!" So I restarted watching basketball games and playing but not in a club.
When I came to Italy in 2002, though, I wasn't so interested about basketball: I was more into soccer, because 10-year-old kids in Italy don't even know basketball.
I restarted to play in late 2003 in a club named Mojazza here in Milan, and I'm one of the prospects to play in the club's First Divison Team (I can't play in First Division because players must be 16 or older, but the coach says that I'll sure play there when I'll be 16).
Even if I'm still young and stuff, I find the 90's more my era than the 2000's, because the players that played in the 90's are mostly all of my favorite ones.
Dear Old World, you represent everything that's wrong...

i started watching basketball in 96 or 97 because i was living in chicagoat that time. i still remember michael jordan's last finals appearance and i got to go see that game where he had the flu and hung 30 something points and fainting at the end of the game (i believe it was utah) i was 8 yrs old back then lol... anyways its sad to see the pussies like boozer sitting out a season because of a fucking calf injury... i think the nba should adapt a clause or rule in a players contract saying that if a players misses a certain amount of games his payments get cut in half or something, maybe that will get their asses motivated to actually do some rehab instead of sitting in the pool or jacuzzi sipping wine...

I don't really have much to talk about since I started watching basketball more seriously starting from '99 (the so called "current" era after Michael Jordan and a group of others started to reach the end of their prime), but my grandfather would always be watching Michael Jordan taking people to school in the mid-ninties so I'd sometimes just watch with him because of boredom. I then started playing basketball, but I was still a bit disinterested considering the fact that I hated the Raptors back then because they "sucked" and everyone said they did.

When Vince Carter got drafted and my dad told me how exciting he was, I decided to actually watch an entire game. Boy, I wasn't disappointed, Vince was dunking on people left and right and even though we had a losing season, I was pretty satisifed by watching someone so exciting. I kept following the Raptors but I never really knew much about statistics or whatever, so I still wasn't very knowledgable when it came down to knowing about salaries and how good a role player could actually be.

It wasn't until I joined these forums that I started taking basketball more seriously and in a different perspective. :D
