J.R. Smith a bust?

Postby Its_asdf on Thu Dec 29, 2005 3:09 pm

Although J.R. is still one hell of a young player, wouldn't you guys have thought that it would have been him to step it up this season and lead the team instead of Chris Paul? I was under the impression that J.R. Smith would be a go to guy for the Hornets this season, but he's been a big disappointment for me so far.

he's still too young and inexperienced. Give it more time. It took guys like Larry Hughes & Jason Richardson a while to come into their own.

I know he's a young guy and everything, but the numbers he's putting up are god damn awful. Although highschool players do need more time to develop, I was thinking that Smith might have made a larger impact on the team by now since I'm guessing that the Hornets are still trying to build around him, right?

I better be kidding. This is a kid in his second year out of HS. A guard. He improved his 3pt shooting percentage, his FT shooting percentage, he is rebounding more and is (very, very) slightly better defender. He was drafted in the '20. I don't how would you call that an bust. He is already a better player than most of picks in that range ever were. He improved drastically from the beginning ot the end of last season. I bet he'll do the same this year and end up as a 14, 15 ppg scorer.

Just curious, if this guy is a bust, what are other high schooler who actually became worse in their second season? *coughjoshsmithcough*

I"m talking more about leading the team rather than individual stats. I mean, I expected him to make a larger impact than just scoring 11 ppg and shooting more than 40% from the field.

Maybe I'm just overreacting.

Nobody ever said that he has to be the leader of that team the moment he steps on the floor. There wasn't much expected from him in his first seasons and there are guys (namely P.J. Brown) who are there to provide that kind of leadership. How many guys were there directly from HS who provided what you call 'leadership'? Lebron? Who else? Not KG? Everybody hated Kobe. Tracy? No, not him. It's pretty much just Lebron.

Isn't JR Smith still younger than Chris Paul? You got to remember that.
Plus I don't think they were ever going to build the team around JR Smith...
Bored.

I'm going to agree with Matt on this one. When the Timberwolves made their first postseason apparence it was the young Kevin Garnett who was the heart and soul of that team. It wasn't Marbury. It wasn't Gugliotta. It was Kevin Garnett.

There, I talked about KG in a thread about JR Smith. I've done everything now.

Chris Paul graduated high school a year before Smith. He was labeled as the most NBA-ready player coming out of the draft. Simply put, he's a better player than J.R. Smith is. Had he come out of high school, he would've put up some really good numbers.

And why is the word 'bust' being brought into this? He's been playing professional basketball for a year and some. This shouldn't be brought up for another couple seasons.

Exactly. If the likes of Kwame Brown and Desagana Diop are still being given the benefit of the doubt because of the promise they still show, surely any talk of JR Smith being a bust this early in the picture is premature.

His 12 ppg is only 3 ppg behind Kobe's 2nd year and ahead of McGrady's second year, and he's probably a better 3 point shooter now than either of those two their sophomore year.

You still have to remember CP is a top5 pick and JR was #18. Even back when drafting out of HS was a risk, both Bryant & McGrady were drafted from HS a lot higher than Smith. I wouldn't expect a kid that age who wasn't even a lottery pick to be the franchise player for the team.

Yup. Definately not a bust.. yet.

He's only in his second season. For that a lone, he can't be a bust.
