No wonder everyone is leaving Memphis

Thu Jun 30, 2005 5:57 am

Here's a nice, warm Memphis welcome:

"West eventually said a few words about Warrick. Then he talked about some trades he wasn't able to make. "I'm disappointed," he said, "absolutely." Whoa. He was disappointed? On draft night? Doesn't West know that's against NBA regulations? Nobody is disappointed on draft night."

--Memphis Commercial Appeal

Yeah, if that's not motivation to play for your team, what is? "Hey buddy, i tried my hardest to trade your sorry *** but nobody would bite so we're stuck with you."

He got a great pick with Warrick, I'm not sure who else he was really hoping for. Memphis is pretty screwed though with so many players unhappy.

lol that was a jerk comment by the logo

He disappointed because no team wants to make a deal with him because GM's think he going to end up with the better deal. He has been trying to get rid of Bonzi, Jwill, Wright and/or Swift and especially Bonzi before his team option runs out to where he will become a RFA. He wasn't really disappointed in the draft because he was happy to get Warrick at 19 because they mentioned how surprised they were about it along with grabbing Roberts.

Still, it's not something one says on-air, much more someone with JW's experience... One has to wonder if his heart is not with Memphis anymore...

yeh true.. normally it's the analysts and so called experts job to make the negative remarks, not the coaching staff of management.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment, it's possible his words were taken somewhat out of context or he didn't express himself the way he wanted to (though it's not as if he's a stranger to the basketball media). But I agree, it's not the kind of remark a GM should make on-air.

Yer, i'd be disappointed if i were jerry west too. If it wasnt Bonzi Wells and Stromile Swift he was shopping he coulda made a run at portlands pick. He'll still get a great player in a roster re-tool and im sure he'll keep Warrick on board.

On an NBA Live 05 angle.....

Who would you trade Bonzi/Stromile/Lorenzen for? Maybe Ray Allen would be a good fit?

I'm sure he's disappointed and is certainly entitled to feel that way, it's just not appropriate from a PR or personnel standpoint to make comments like that to the media.
