Spurs as champions...

...for me are probably the most boring champs ever. Can't help myself, is this is gonna be the next dynasty... it kinda changes the face of the NBA. They play well, got all it takes to be the champ, but still... Seeing the stone-faced Duncan, the ugly Ginobili, the awkward would-like-to-be-a-defensive-specialist Bowen who plays D mostly by navigating people to Duncan for a block and the rest of the bunch who still only learn to be really productive, I think it's only Tony Parker whom I truly like on this team.

I know this is a totally biased crap, but just a thought to share.

What do you think, if there's no Duncan on this team, would they even make the playoffs?

They might not have the flair of some of the great teams in history or even recent history for that matter, but I personally wouldn't call them boring. In answer to your question, I think the Spurs might be able to make the playoffs without Duncan, but not as one of the top seeds and not as a serious title contender.

Well I bet most people would love for their team to be 'boring' if that meant instant credibility and the occasional NBA title. All praise "freedom of thought".

Well Stern doesn't like it, probably, seeing as the Spurs finals have had the lowest ratings ever since the 90s. (Talking about the NY-Spurs and the NJ-Spurs Finals...I don't know about the most recent one.) I mean, I know they're a good team, but it doesn't change the fact that Spurs are boring...to most people anyhow. Except Ginobili. I shall make him an exception because he is actually fun to watch. I think the reason why people do not like the Spurs:
1. Too goody two-shoes...as embodied by David Robinson I guess..I heard a story about someone in the Spurs team bus had a Playboy magazine and then David Robinson just ripped it from the person's hand and threw it out of the window. Probably just a joke, but Spurs have that "too good for TV" image.
2. Bruce Bowen: He is a great defender, but sometimes he does play sort of dirty. (You kind of have to if you play defense with that intensity) And that time Vince Carter got injured...it's kind of weird that Bowen suddenly decided to put his foot out right after Vince Carter jumped...just weird..I'm not assuming anything. (OK, ok I am assuming)
3. Duncan hitting the backboard: nuff said....
4. Duncan when doing chest bumps, he crosses his arms to protect himself from the massive...Tony Parker..oh cmon...
5. Duncan's voice seems too nerdy. (This is coming from a total nerd... -_-;; )
6. The Spurs Immense Luck: Spurs get first pick and get Duncan? And the percentage of that happening was really low if I remember correctly. Robinson also just happened to be injured the season before. This basically was the best injury for the team ever by any player. Then they get Parker and Ginobili at very low spots. (I foresaw that Ginobili would one day become a great player though after watching some international game that I don't remember right now, but nobody listened saying "who the hell is Ginobili?")
7. No Flair: Their game is too fundamental and they do not have any players that stand out that much. Even Duncan, who should stand out, does not really stand out because of his personality. Once in a while you have some "pissed off Duncan moments" (examples: Olympics and when he was asked about the Shaq trade.) but they aren't remembered much.
8. Too Harmonious: Do you like to see movies where there are no hardships, no challenges? Spurs have not had major injuries during the playoffs and generally their players don't complain much. Everyone seems to love everybody or something.

Even knowing that these are the wrong reasons to hate a team, I still hate the Spurs and think they are boring...Maybe it's cuz I root for Shaq's teams and Shaq doesn't like Duncan much. Oh well. Oh yea, this post didn't really have a point...except wondering if these were the reasons other people thought the Spurs are boring.

They may not be the flashiest, yet, but Parker has flair and i think he'll get more adventurous as time goes on (and he keeps getting pussy from the desperate housewife) Ginobili is an entertaining freak in his own, Euro, kinda way....

The Spurs did it by being VERSATILE, they stomped out Pheonix who looked unstoppable by outscoring them (which isnt easy) and they beat on Detroit by playing tough defence and showing precision on offence.

They earn't it in my opinion and it'll prolly only be one year for them at the top.

So hats off, oh, by the way. Robert Horry just became a legend, and he deserves it.

I'm not even going to dignify those 'reasons' with a counter-response.. If you lot think that a team like the Blazers, where it's hard to find one non-known offender is more 'exciting', then you can all bask in your own ignorance...

And I would suggest laying off the media hype, cool dunks, flashy young stars, and whiny lil' snot-nosed high school kids are take some pleasure on how a harmonious team learns to play and win... That's it, I'm not saying anything more about this, I'm lighting up my cigar, sit on my desk, do my work and keep a smile on my face after th egame 7 win. Be well!!!

anyway yeah I think they are a very boring team, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Wait, yes it is. The casual NBA fan (which would be me) doesn't want to see a team that specializes in Defense and whose superstar is good because of basics (not saying duncan is bad, just not exciting). I like to watch Ginobli play, but not when Duncan is the one scoring the majority of the points for his team. The Spurs are a great team no doubt. Just not a team that I like to watch.

I agree. They are also far from boring. That stigma is only attached to them because they used to play a pound the ball inside and kick it out brand of basketball with little to no running game and no perimeter players capable of creating offense for themselve(consistently) by taking defenders of the dribble and getting inside. Now they have two guards capable of breaking down the defense, they run well (have been for atleast the last two years) and watching their offense is great. It may not be as great as watching a dunkfest ala Phoenix but SA beat Phoenix at their own game of outscore and they did it with flair too. Watching Ginobili and Parker attack the Pistons was fun. IF you are bored with them then you have to be bored watching other teams too because they are no longer one dimensional as some of the other good teams are.

Looks like we don't have very many true basketball fans around here. Seems like a lot of you watch the game for the dunks and all the flashy plays.

I would find myself glued to the T.V. for a game of Charlotte and Atlanta. To tell you the truth I enjoyed this years finals a lot more than last years finals, I prefer a series that is not one-sided like last year.

During the offseason I find myself watching a lot of summer league games and enjoying them.

I wish there were more teams like the Spurs and Pistons who play the game the right way. Do you guys think they really care people think they're boring? You think they would switch their "defense first" style to "let Chauncey and Manu do the scoring" just so we could have a Suns vs Heat final?

Same ... actually with the basketball coverage here, I'd find myself glued to the T.V for a WNBA game. I actually watch the WNBL over here on ABC when it's on. It's sad, but I love watching basketball.
