Vince scores 39 on Raptors :(

Sat Apr 16, 2005 12:01 pm

Arrgh, I can't believe Vince scored 39 and the Nets won :x All I wanted was a Raptors victory, or at least a really shitty game from Vince. I didn't expect this :(

Sat Apr 16, 2005 12:02 pm

He owed this to the Nets after being ridiculed by Rose in their last encounter. Go Vince (Y)

Sat Apr 16, 2005 12:12 pm

How bad was the welcome?? Did he got booed or something??

Sat Apr 16, 2005 12:27 pm

Oh ya...
they booed him and chanted VC stinks... He deserves it.

Sat Apr 16, 2005 12:49 pm

LMAO. Well, he scored 39 so he doesn't stinks...sucks for Raptors fans...

Sat Apr 16, 2005 2:59 pm

muahhaha congrats vince... toronto is CLEARLY nothing without you.

What do you mean by toronto is nothing without him? We were 8 and 16 when we had him this season and he was averaging 15 points per game because he obviously wasn't trying for us.....

Sun Apr 17, 2005 6:26 am

I think Vince Carter deserved the welcome he got. Then after the game he played he said in an interview "Now those fans have something to think about when they go home."

Hey VC... FUCK YOU! Is it wrong for those fans to be mad when you starting treating them and everyone else like shit? Is it wrong for them to be mad when you go on the IR for sneezing? Is it wrong for them to be fucking pissed off when you are out there CLEARLY not giving 100%, and then after you are traded to ADMIT that you didnt give 100%???

You are a fucking asshole vince and you give a bad name to the NBA.

I agree. That was a stupid comment by Vince. He screwed us over by purposely lowering his trade value by giving us a half-ass Vince and so we trade a half-ass Vince for pieces of shit, and now Vince is playing like he should've been playing.

Emphasis on the "asshole."

I agree (Y)

We have stupid fans, you don't keep chanting and yelling when your own team is at the line, even Jalen was missing free throws. We missed like 10 free throws in the first half because people were chanting while we were on the line.

The crowd helped Vince and the Nets more than they helped the Raptors. After Vince started killing us in the second half, the chanting wnet down because it doesn't really work to be screaming Vince sucks when he's beating on your team.

Go Pape!!

awesome performance by vince.. don't get me wrong, i still think what he did to the raps organization was mean as hell but i love seeing someone so hated going to enemy territory and tearing it up. he totally killed the raptors tonight. way to shut the fans up too ;)

Hard to disagree with those sentiments. It didn't affect me personally as I'm not a Raptors fan, but I hate to see players display that kind of attitude, especially given Vince's half-hearted approach in Toronto earlier this year.

Sun Apr 17, 2005 2:47 pm

As a nets fan I think it's fair to say that I forego some impartiality, but in VC's defense: he wanted out, they weren't prepared to let him go, he created a situation in which they were forced to get rid of him. Being a part of a team is like being in a serious relationship. If your hearts not in it then it's not fair on yourself or your team to stick around. Ultimately if you feel you can be a more productive, happier person in a different environment then you should probably get out while you still have any passion and a gift to offer. So what if he had a messy breakup and things were said that perhaps shouldn't have been said (didn't silas recently call c-boo a cunt for leaving in free agency), what happened needed to happen. I don't think it's fair that VC should be blamed for Babcock's shitty trading skills, none of you VC haters can honestly say that Babcock couldn't have done alot better regardless of VC's underperforming.

Honestly though, all power to Toronto. I hope they're able to rebuild and refocus and good luck to them with their draft picks.

Sun Apr 17, 2005 4:40 pm

No question, Babcock handled the situation poorly. Carter wanted out before the season and that would have been the best time for the Raptors to trade him, when his stock was a lot higher. Even when the trade was made, Babcock could have held out for a better deal. I'm not saying Babcock is free of blame for how things turned out or commending him on the job he's done so far.

I agree to an extent, but the NBA is still a business and the players are still employees. They are bound to their teams by contracts, in Carter's case one that pays quite handsomely, and thus they have certain responsibilities and obligations. Only in professional sports would giving a half-hearted effort allow you to leave one job for a better one. The reaction by the Raptors' fans was quite understandable. It was quite an odd remark for Vince Carter to make.

Mon Apr 18, 2005 2:27 am

Agree with Andrew. The NBA is still a job, not a relationship.

Mon Apr 18, 2005 2:47 am

But see, the problem i have is that when you are on a sports team, you are like a family. When you are on a sports team at such a huge level like the NBA, and you are the best player on the team your responsibility is HUGE. By doing what Vince did he let down everyone else on the team, and every Toronto Raptors fan.

Mon Apr 18, 2005 3:08 am

I saw an interview with Vince Carter before the Raptors game, and he seemed to be answering every question with an intelligent response until:

Reporter: "But do you think you owe the Raptors and the fans an apology?"
Vince Carter: "For what?"
Reporter: "For the way you played the first half of the season"
Vince "Next question...Next question"

He somewhat answered it later on but it wasn't really a good enough excuse for him tanking the first half of the season.

Wow a better post has never been made!

P.S. Those tickets cost a lot of money VC you asshole!

Edit: Oh and you could have won with Bosh, Rose and marshall if you had tried punk!

Mon Apr 18, 2005 5:20 am

Nice post IndyPacer, totally felt you on that one. There was nothing I wanted more than to see Toronto crush New Jersey. Sigh. VC's a turd. And same goes for Babcock.

Pape Sow played some nice ball... I think we need to draft a good guard this upcoming draft, and we could be headed for some good things in the near future.

Grrr, I didn't see that one. I agree with Mercury, that Babcock did make some bad moves, although he was pretty confident that Vince would be happy under Mitchell. Actually, Vince was pretty excited at the beginning of the season to be playing for the Raptors so there was hope there - but it was a risk that didn't go too well. But as Andrew said, the NBA is a business and a profession, and what Vince did, not playing hard in the beginning of the season was unprofessional and it really hurt his former team that brought a lot for him.

Mon Apr 18, 2005 6:34 am

I don't blame VC for his actions. The Raptors weren't doing a damn rat shit about their future and they were not progressing at all and if I were in Vince's shoes I would've done the same shit.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. We're such newbs, we have no idea how to heckle. We should get some lessons from Philadelphia or New York, you know cities who shut up when their own team is shooting free throws! :o

I was down there on Friday night and the atmosphere was great, we were running circles around the Nets in the first half but then Rafer Alston started to chuck his 28-foot three pointers and touches that Bosh got were sparse. He got 18 points on 10 shots and made something happen everytime, either he got to the line or scored himself but Alston and Rose just kept chucking jumpers and no one could guard Vince.

Wow, you guys seem to be commenting on the Vince situation like you understand the intricacies of the entire dilemma. Richard Peddie, CEO of the Raptors promised Vince that he would have a say in helping the franchise decide on a new general manager over the summer. Carter, of course wanted Julius Erving but then the same management who promised him a say in the hiring ignored his suggestions and hired another "Yes-Man" in Rob Babcock. Don't get me wrong, if you feel a certain way about this situation, I'm not here to change your mind, I'm just saying that there are two sides to every situation. Vince was lied to and then made his demand in the summer, he should have been traded in the summer when he was coming off a fairly healthy season and averaged 22, 5, 5. But we held on to him (First mistake), he then decided to slack off for the 15 or so games he played and then we traded him 2 months before the trading deadline (Second Mistake). I could care less because I understand Vince's point of view and trading him hasn't really made a difference, we were 8-16 with him and 24-31 without him, it also has allowed Bosh to develop so I'm happy we got rid of him.

Mon Apr 18, 2005 9:36 am

DipSetVC: Good points, and I do agree that Vince should've been traded earlier, but he purposely lowered his trade value by admitting that he did not play as hard as he could have. Sure, Vince didn't like the hiring of Babcock and the Araujo draft pick (although I didn't mind), and Vince made it clear that he wanted to be traded. He would've been traded eventually, but he shouldn't be unprofessional with his job and contract by letting down his teammates and fans.

You're right, the trade did not make a difference with the Raptors, except for allowing the younger players to develop more. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that Vince is gone, but the point is, we could've gotten an all-star caliber player in exchange for Vince. But since his value and reputation plummeted, we got basically nothing in return.

I'd like that only if it's a team I'm rooting for.

I think guys should play their hardest all the time, but this is the NBA and unless you're someone like Kevin Garnett, that just doesn't happen every night.

Shaq doesn't play hard until the Playoffs. Remember that squabble he had with his coach? So it's pretty hypocritical to diss on VC and not the other 90% of the NBA that doesn't play hard every night.
