The Three Little Bigs

Postby GloveGuy on Sun Mar 06, 2005 5:29 am

This year's crop of rookies has three big men who, in my mind, could each be something special.

First we have Emeka Okafor, who's easily the most fundamentally sound, and most NBA-ready of the three. He's an automatic double-double, night in, and night out. His offense is still a bit limited, better than predicted. He has a nice face-up shot from 15 feet. On the defensive end he's a beast and he can grab rebounds with the best of them. He's my ROY and I don't think that's going to change. I'd compare him to a young Alonzo Mourning.

Next is Dwight Howard, the number one pick who already has a topic made for him. He's probably the rawest of the three, but the transitions he's made from Summer League games to now is unbelievable. His frame's still a bit small, but certainly an improvement compared to last summer. In my mind, he's the biggest sink-or-swim. If he swims, I'd compare his game to that of Kevin Garnett's. Sinks, Marcus Camby. Floats, Juwan Howard.

Last is the Celtic's Al Jefferson, who happend to be the latest drafted of the three. Celtic's management is looking for this kid to be the franchise player of the future. On the offensive end, his footwork is McHale-like. He's not afraid to command the ball in the post, while maintaing a great attitude on the floor. On defense, his age shows as he does look a little lost on the end. He's made the least noise out of the three, but his future is just as bright.

Nice analysis Glove Guy... I agree strongly on Dwight Howard. I love this guy and I have to say he has potential to be better than The Kid. But that's just me!

What has impressed me about Meka is how he's been able to step into the NBA and do pretty well without complaining (am i right?)... hes awesoem defender and has better offence than Ben Wallace can ever put up...

And Al Jefferson... this guy is young but the possibilities of what he may become.. the sky is the limit.

out of all the big men mentioned in the thread I see Bosh as the best one and then Meka... Kwame really needs to find a new place and Milicic needs minutes... stating the obvious lol

i completley agree with you on all three. especially al jefferson, the others are talked about a lot, but other then on this forum you dont hear about jeffferson that often. he is going to be the future of the Celtics without a doubt, he is a dangerous player.

Juwan Howard? I didn't see that one coming at all, I see no similarities in their games, Juwan can't rebound and defend, and his primary offensive weapon is his mid-range jumper, none of those things can be attributed to Dwight even as a rookie.

I was talking about Juwan Howard of the Washington Bullets, who was actually an all-star one year. His rebounding numbers weren't as nice as Dwight's current but that's because he had Chris Webber and Muresan on his team. Juwan was a beast in his prime though, and I could see Dwight's game becoming really similar to it.

That is if he doesn't reach his potential though.

Sinks, Marcus Camby. Floats, Juwan Howard.[/quote]

Even though Juwan was great in his prime, imo, he's at the sinking end, and Camby is at the floating end. The only thing stopping Camby are his injuries, but other than that, he can play.

i loved that bullets team. they were right behind the pacers for awhile for my favorite team actually. i still have my juwan howard bullets jersey i bought when i was like 7 or 8. that was a good team.

calbert cheany, chris whitney were on that team too, they were good then also.

Not what I meant. If he sinks and totally misses his potential, he'll be a Marcus Camby. If he floats and hits his potential nicely he'll be a Juwan Howard IN HIS PRIME. I know that Camby owns Howard now, don't worry.

my hats goes off too emeka. it's easy to say well he's playing on an expansion team so he should be getting good numbers. but think about it- he's the only guy on that team that opponents have some kind of defensive game plan for yet he still gets his numbers.

has dwight howard ever taken a jump shot in a nba game?

The crop of big men now is just amazing, I think in the future this is how it will be with the young big men from the last 2 years:

1) Dwight Howard
2) Chris Bosh
3) Emeka Okafor
4) Al Jefferson
5) Mike Sweetney
